It is the attention to detail that makes D M Kahn's music, videos, productions, the writing, playing, mixing, everything is of the highest quality because he puts in the extra time and effort to go above and beyond , and not in any competitive, be the best kind of way..... i have so much respect for everything i see and hear on this channel
Great insight into your work-flow and mixer routings. Apart from the technical information, you are so modest about both your musicality and your skills on the desk. You are truly The Dub Master. Big Up bro. One Love ❤️💛💚
Always loved D.U.B. since the middle 80s. Your break down and explanations are superb. Keep this up, explaining other elements of recording techniques and laying tracks.
No way! I have been thinking about picking up alto-sax just this past week! But then i'd watch a TH-cam video of some girl trying to learn it and i felt maybe it's more difficult then i'd imagine it to be. Welcome back. I programmed a sax recently on a song called Max Fury Girl Of My Dreams on sound cloud turned out pretty good i must say!
Bravo and thank you, mate.....great sense of composition and arrangement (requires timing.......)......nothing sounds as beautiful and deep than classic dub .....not too gimmicky but meaningful with fx.
Bro, I absolutely love your content. It’s awesome! I live down here in South Florida so I totally feel where you’re coming from… I just got the big six… And I’m trying to learn something from you, bro… I’m using the galaxy 74! Keep making videos bro they’re awesome
Thanks for stopping by!! big six is a wonderful quality board, enjoy that! Be sure to grab the stems to practice dubbing, they’re only $15 (link in video description) thanks!
Very inspiring video, I just add that nothing is simple in Dub, if you know your machines and stems inside out, you can be a Master Dubster😊I was tripping with the live cuts, Blessings from Angola!
DM Khan, can you please explain how can you still hear the phaser with the channel down? As an insert? if so how do you send the return to the other channels to feed it into the reverb? I got a bit confused on this part. Thank you for the video! Big up!
Probably the best explanation of dub effects..unfortunately my space is limited..i have a Roland MX1 mixer but accept that i alsonneed an analogue mixer, i am looking at the Allen and Heath ZED 14 and 16 channel mixers, is it better to get the model with on board effects or not? Thanks in advance Peace from OZ
Great Videos ! It is so clear now and looks so much fun, I will buy a mixer. Do you think a Holy Grail (spring) reverb (ehx) will take line in signal well ? I really enjoy your videos.
there is a crucial fact : before you dub your tracks, you have THE right reggae sound... all your instruments sound wonderfully ... I had seek for a long time just to have this kind of bass sound with my bass guitar ...
Is there a big difference between putting the filter on the insert of the return, rather than just having the chain go from the aux out to the spring then into the filter then the return?
It’s definitely a different thing, I’ve done it before but I didn’t find it as interesting as on the insert of the reverb. It’s definitely a viable option though and worth experimenting with!
With my particular mixer I don’t need to use an actual console channel/fader for this. I can export the console via FireWire straight from Mon 2 as a channel output via some buttons on the console. Then in the daw I put the 910 on the input of that corresponding channel and record it. I monitor the record back channel. There’s a little latency but it’s not bad.
I don’t recommend it to be honest, real guitar is the best way. There are some new VSTs that are probably ok… I just just do a triad chord and make it very short and make sure you’re running through an amp sim for some crunch
If you’ve used the channel insert to send to a piece of gear, you’d return it to the insert (using the same TRS cable). But typically you’ll use a channel input as a “return channel”
Dread at the controls! Can somebody here, or Mr Kahn himself, give me some advice here in a short answer? For 20 years i'm recording very conventional, putting everything on tape. Playing all the instruments myself. Now i'm switching to digital. What is a good daw for Reggae and what midi controller can i use to mix some dub? Remember, i have a ghetto budget, about €600. I bought myself a Daw pc with an i3 core with 32 ram for €500 too, is this sufficient? Bless
Hi DM Kahn I notice you have a different Midas desk 32 channel? what model is it? How do you handle stereo external fx? El Capistan etc. I'm new to send and return, not owning a desk as yet but like the Midas sound
DM Khan always the best source for reggae knowledge on the internet. Skills and technique.
Wow, thanks so much man! Respect

Thank you David, it takes a true lover and player of this music to realize what it goes into it. Manners and respect 🫡
Couldn’t have said it any better myself. Thanks and respect to you D M Kahn.
I really appreciate this old-style sound so that it sounds like it could be from this old style dub masters.
Thank you bro, I appreciate the lovely kind words 🙏
@@DMKahnand it’s true
exactly this oozes authenticity, superdope

Up to you man, whatever you think is best!!
Knowbody luvs this guy
Nice video! What mixing board are you using?
So you do have an acoustic upright piano. And a Hammond organ. And you can get sound out of a sax. Dope. Trumpet and trombone next.
Natural progression lol
1st Time to your channel bro, you dub like a real boss. In true dub rootz style. Listening from the Philippines.
Subbed instantly.
Thanks for stopping by man! Big up
Super nice though this makes my dubs sound so amateur. :D Good to see how it's done well.
Thanks for stopping by man, keep practicing and you’ll get where you want to be!
Great Videos ! It is so clear now and looks so much fun, I will buy a mixer. Do you think a Holy Grail (spring) reverb (ehx) will take line in signal well ? I really enjoy your videos.
I’m pretty sure Pachyman uses that reverb pedal so you should be good!
@@DMKahn He performs in Antwerp this month. So I can check this super interesting fact out. Do you use a lot of re amp pedals when auxing to pedals ?
Only with my real space echo
there is a crucial fact : before you dub your tracks, you have THE right reggae sound... all your instruments sound wonderfully ... I had seek for a long time just to have this kind of bass sound with my bass guitar ...
Thanks Peter! It’s been a long time journey for sure
Nice Video, but the H910 unit by Eventide is a vintage DIGITAL fx device.
...just wanted to correct friendly 😉
Thank you I appreciate that!!!
what's the name of that filter box? the combination with the spring verb is such a classic sound
It’s a resonant high pass filter. The brand is Westfinga. Cheers!!
Big up khan. In which video you have explanation of eventide plugin effect? Thanx
“Dubbing with DM Kahn” I believe
Is there a big difference between putting the filter on the insert of the return, rather than just having the chain go from the aux out to the spring then into the filter then the return?
It’s definitely a different thing, I’ve done it before but I didn’t find it as interesting as on the insert of the reverb. It’s definitely a viable option though and worth experimenting with!
So you bring the send fx back to a channel and have a filter on that channel insert, right. I should do that too. Any other insert tips?
I can’t think of another one except maybe running a phaser on an insert. I’m gonna try that! Haha got me thinking over here like 🤔
how is the routing done for the model910? mon2 to a channel, into the daw to the plugin?
With my particular mixer I don’t need to use an actual console channel/fader for this. I can export the console via FireWire straight from Mon 2 as a channel output via some buttons on the console. Then in the daw I put the 910 on the input of that corresponding channel and record it. I monitor the record back channel. There’s a little latency but it’s not bad.
Blessed. Can you show us how to make reggae guitar strums in midi ?
I don’t recommend it to be honest, real guitar is the best way. There are some new VSTs that are probably ok… I just just do a triad chord and make it very short and make sure you’re running through an amp sim for some crunch
New subscriber .. please I really want to buy something like this , what are the best / affordable mixers that can do that ? Thanks
Hi there, thanks for stopping by and subscribing! I would look at the Soundcraft MTK22
How much do you charge for drum tracking? I'm working on a dub album
Send me an email thekahn@gmail.com with some sound example. Careful spelling K A H N
what is the name of that echo pedal on the left side, again ?
This one is the UAD Starlight
I want someone like you for my reggae album
"so basicly, Im showing some Kahncepts"
I’m just a Kahn man
Do my efx go back into the channel insert or channel input?
If you’ve used the channel insert to send to a piece of gear, you’d return it to the insert (using the same TRS cable). But typically you’ll use a channel input as a “return channel”

I would say Ableton is your best bet. All the best
The piano sounds great man.. ur one seriously organized mf 😊
Murdaaaaaa
Thank you my fellow dub soldier 🫡 big up EN Young!!!
Skankin ain't easy
but it's necessary! hahaha
Hi DM Kahn I notice you have a different Midas desk 32 channel? what model is it? How do you handle stereo external fx? El Capistan etc. I'm new to send and return, not owning a desk as yet but like the Midas sound
I don’t send stereo. I send mono signals they have stereo outputs (which bring into separate return channels)
