- In this episode we focus on one of the botanical wonders of Northern California, a plant by the name of #Darlingtonia californica that compensates for the lack of nitrogen in its substrate by trapping insects in modified "pitcher" leaves and using bacteria at the base of the pitchers to digest them. We also spend a few minutes examining modern herbalism - much of which seems rooted in anthropocentric fad for young healthy people more so than any kind of practicality for those who are actually sick and using the secondary metabolites of plants to remediate their ailments.

I had a science teacher in junior high/middle school who sounds just like him. He had the mouth of a sailor but he had the vocabulary as any scholar. Though he swears now and then the other teachers pay no mind, he was a really good teacher.

"Colorful vocab, watch the low jab" -Grouch....... Yeah, my overly sensitive self, was getting a bit annoyed by the constant calling out of groups of people, that annoy Tony... But I need to remember (because I am such a sensitive fuck), that maybe it's me, and Tony may be right that too many people are "too soft" these days.... Anyways, I don't believe Tony gives a crap who he attracts with "honey" or pushes away with "vinegar". I can totally relate to what he has found in life - the joy, the wonder, the connection, and even the feeling of inner peace/happiness, when one has learned about plants and rocks to the point where you can go anywhere, and start interpreting, understanding, and therefore deciphering the natural scene/ecosystem/micro habitat that you are looking at..... "feeling better for a day, MAYBE 2," after examining the perianth of a Penstemon... Love it.
However, being as sensitive as I am, I could almost feel some super respectful and responsible (in terms of plant collecting) "etsy witch" feeling very alienated and upset by Tony's comments, when that person may have been thoroughly enjoying the video/lesson up to that point.
We're really fucked as humans..... BUT, I think we all need to work on not pushing each other away or into 'boxes'.....
I do appreciate the negative commentary on the state of humanity.....

Coming from a pagan that got an interest in botany from my practices, I love to learn about the plants endemic to the region I was born and raised in. I love to learn about their ecology and learn about their risk status. So many herbs in the Blue Ridge area are over harvested (ie american ginseng). After doing research of the native Appalachian plants, I'm getting very much into mycology and preservation. Your videos are so amazing and mean a lot to me. They're an incredible learning resource.

Man, your comment about Ghost Pipe reminded me of the one time I found some while at summer camp in WI as a kid. Didn't know it even existed, and felt such wonder seeing this weird, translucent, white/purple/pink flower thing growing from under a rotting log. Also found a hiking sock that was completely colonized by moss. Nature is great!
Shopping in nature is an interesting concept - I've heard of different peoples who practice traditional foraging, never took the whole plant, cutting only parts of a root or specific pieces of leaves and stems and then afterwards buried valuable items near the plant from beads, leathers and bones and after colonialism sometimes buried coins (taking the shop metaphor literal) but the premise being always to give something back when taking

I'd like to see you head to Calaveras county someday. You could swing by Big Trees and there's some interesting plants there. Forgive my common names, not trying to act more knowledgeable than I am, but some of my favorites were Madrones and Mountain Misery. Also tons of Manzanita, but I know you have covered those. The mountain misery was one of my favorites because I actually like the smell, but it coats everything in sticky resin so you take the smell with you. My shoes and dogs used to permanently smell like it.
Another great video. Thanks, you always have my gratitude for bringing us this content. I often stop the video on close ups just to marvel at what I see. We get huge flushes of Indian Pipe here in southern Maine, all over the place. All the claims of what the plant can do are true. Just plop yourself down in front of a clump and everything is just a little bit better. Even better in you can find a brightly colored Pinesap (M. hypopitys is much less common here). What's really interesting to me is that the fungi they parasitize don't form ericoid mycorrhiza, I'm kinda fascinated by the 'relationships' plants have with other organisms and how they started. It may have been that when a Monotropa ancestor developed the ability to be come associated with a non-ericoid mycorrhiza forming fungus, the the relationship was very one sided and that allowed it's progeny to do well while accumulated normally deleterious mutations. Don't you have to wonder? And if berberine is so great, all the herbalists can come here and make a killing while helping rid us of these damn invasive Berberis. They're everywhere. 30 years ago I started my first landscaping job, I didn't know what they were- but I called them Thorny Usurpers. Loads and loads of those bright yellow roots (the wood is yellow too), and people will pay you to rip em up. It could get some "Eco Warrior" certification or something and be worth even more. Why isn't this a thing already?

Meh, not THAT offensive. Indians do have pipes. I dont know if the plant resembles them. Havent seen it. But yeah, common names are lame, buuut they are a lot easier and often intuitive. Tough call, imo
OOh- that Lilium pardalinum! I found one of them when I was a kid. I looked at it for about fifteen minutes, but by the time I came back it was gone. This is the first time I've seen another one!
You know what though, I'd say if someone tells you a plant is very grounding and you eat it and die, they were right. you'll be so grounded you'll be 6 feet under
Growing plants from seed or by vegetative propagation is a great hobby. There is no need to dig things up. There is also a real challenge in growing things well. Many thanks for another atmospheric and colourful presentation!

Great point about not harvesting medicinal herbs if u are not in need, as mother nature is not Walmart! Tho even if healthy and not taking them, everyone should be learning more about them and their benefits, as doing so is often healing enough; a reward from mother nature for knowing her better!

Great video as always. I love these for learning about core angiosperms, as my interest tends to lean more towards the ancient stuff (conifers, magnoliids, and the like). A few things to note however; there are actually darlingtonia's that grow in more bog-like conditions, however these are atypical. Darlingtonia natural site is a famous example of one of these. With ultramafic rocks, there is also an extrusive form called komatiite, however this doesn't form anymore due to mantle conditions and is thus quite rare.
My favorite fact about sarraceniacea is about how their flowers work. Because they’re carnivorous and they basically eat bugs, you’d think they wouldn’t be insect pollinated. But most (maybe all, I’m not sure) are. The way they account for their own traps is that they just have really tall flower spikes. Insects in the range of their flowers are out of range of their traps, and vice versa.
With really tall species like D. californica and S. leucophylla, the flower spikes get crazy tall. With the amount of wind exposure they get in their native habitats (usually nutrient-poor areas where very few other plants grow to provide shade or a wind buffer) it’s honestly a wonder the flowers don’t always get knocked down.

I really appreciate your rants on people who take shit irresponsibly. Recently a population of peyote in big bend that was planted hundreds of years ago by some indigenous person was poached and extirpated. So not only did we loose a population of a vulnerable species, but a source of traditional indigenous medicine for people who had managed and cultivated that population over generations

In Michigan we call the ghost pipes Indian pipes. I see them in groups in August in the oak, maple , beech old woods.
