Having raised tortoises for years, I can make an educated guess at how the seeds get distributed. If a tortoise eats something like a raspberry, that is juicy and sticky and easily broken, it invariably gets a piece or two stuck to it's chin. They clean their chins by scratching them with their front legs or rubbing them on the ground, but they have a hard time with small debris that fit between the claws or are on the underside of the head where rubbing doesn't reach. It wouldn't take much for a plant to evolve a snotty texture to really take advantage of that and hitch a ride. The debris tends to stay on for a couple days until it's dislodged by another feeding. I would say tortoises have debris like this about half the time they feed on something like a raspberry or blackberry.

Never too long. I used to give 2 1/2 hour tours at a botanical garden. People loved it, I suspect because you don’t go to a botanical garden if you’re not interested. The other thingI love about these long episodes featuring a subject expert is the uniqueness of the people who do this work. The same was and is true of the botanists and nursery folks I knew, whether they had a PhD or an associate’s degree, or just an elevated interest. These people are doing the lord’s work, and if the world is to be saved from humanity, these folks are the ones who will do it.

Thank you Russell! Truly a king among men.
Joey, get this man in the field with you, we all know you’re going back down there, you need a guide. Get it together fellas!
I like how excited Russell got… not that he was monotone at all, but nothing really got a rise out of him here in his collection. The way he spoke and explained is a real sign of experience and passion to me.
That said, I bet it’s a blast to watch when Russell does start geeking out in the field… lol
I can see it now, scampering around the quartz and dropping to his belly.
    Passion is so contagious!
The fact that there was 0 reference to money, profit, sales, marketing, or curb appeal …

Your videos have piqued my interest in plants in general! Many years ago I worked for the Missouri Botanical Gardens. It was interesting but I wasn’t all that into plants in general. But after 30 years or so and coming across your channel several years ago, it has awoken a love and respect for plants that had been buried in my psyche since a child! YOU ROCK!

wow, an hour?? it didnt feel like it at all! i was so immersed and enthralled! It all looked like an alien planet, it felt like exploring a beautiful alien ecosystem, geeking out with two friends, you two's chemistry is amazing!
Dayum, the diversity is astounding, especially at the start, those vases looked empty because of that amazing camouflage. And those amazing spiraly ones, i always thought it had to do with pushing away the substrate and diggin its way out to the surface, like a drill. Its so cool that it has to do with fog and water collection. I bet it has engeneering applications.
the world of botany is so cool.

I've been growing Lithops for about 6 years now. at 17:11 when they talk about the flowers getting stuck or not fully emerging could be for many of reasons, such as not enough water, too much water and or a temperature drop/increase. but then again Lithops are strange and they do as they do.
