How Simone Biles Achieves So Much Height In Her Tumbling!

  • 🔥Many of you messaged me on Insta asking why the answer to my ROBHS Block quiz was Negative (toes behind hips) 👇
    .
Well I literally couldn't find a better person to illustrate this example than the 👑QUEEN herself!
    .
🧐Few things to remember: if you've read my 3 Laws of Tumbling than you know the 3rd law states: All training surfaces will give back exactly the same amount of force that you put into them, but at an opposite angle (for my physics nerds, these have been adapted from the Newtonian laws of motion)
    .
This means if your toes are in FRONT, you'll be thrown back. And when you add in the horizontal momentum from the RO... it'll be even more aggressive. This is great if you want to do another BHS or a whip, but DEADLY💀 if your goal is max height🙈
    .
Similarly, if you chose neutral, it would makes sense at first: you put force ⬇️down into the floor, and it gives it back to you in the ⬆️upwards direction... But we still have to account for the horizontal momentum from the RO. Which means if toes are neutral, net result is up & back (if the entry was a stBHS, this would be the right answer)
    .
Thus, the negative angle is the BEST choice. Toes back means the floor tries to push you forward. This cancels out most of the horizonal momentum and net result is the only direction left to go... and that's UP⬆️😎
    .

This is correct. It starts with velocity keeping center mass moving across the floor on a fairly level plane. The same is true in vaulting. This energy is converted to lift through the angle of contact to the floor or vaulting table in gymnastics. However, the forces must be conveyed through correct body positions. This is why we call for flattening the hips to drive the force through the legs and torso in an effective line. Or, in the case of vaulting, the force is conveyed through the arms and shoulders calling for an open shoulder angle and straighter arms that line up with the torso. Coaches must be aware of these forces in order to isolate problems.

    • @terrywheelock9458

The floor is not springy enough yet, the only reason that she is doing what she is doing is that yes she is a good tumbler, BUT the real reason is her body mass matches the ideal compression rate of the floor.
The amount of flips and twists is dependent on the equipment used to launch yourself into the air to be able to complete the desired skill, ask an astronaut how many flip and twist they could do! 🤣

Previously, it was thought that being light helps you to get higher.. but you can only gain so much muscle and stay “super skinny” (like the gymnasts from the 60’s-90’s)
I love that Simone and others have shown us that you can be heavier and still move with such skill and precision. Instead of being light, they are heavier, but heavier from PURE muscle! Which, in turn, that muscle helps them propel their jump higher due to power, and helps land more solid! No wobbly legs on landing thanks to that muscle. The strength helps absorb the fast momentum.. plus, you have to eat A LOT of healthy good to gain and maintain such muscles… yay for not having to starve yourself to meet “body standards”. Screw that! Be strong and eat well, and you will still fly with grace :D muscles are still beautiful and graceful in my opinion. What is graceful is a subjective opinion. You don’t have to be super slim to have grace and fluidity
