My mix of the two methods works like this: I start a 25 minutes timer on the forest app meaning that I have to work at least 25 minutes, but I set my phone on silent/do not disturb. This way, I don't actually know when the 25 minutes are up. I take a break (after the 25 mins are up) either when I start to feel tired/distracted, when I have a specific need or to do (e.g. eat, get a coffee, go to a meeting,...) or when I've finished a big task. This helps me manage my time, keep focused and also track how long I spend on each activity (vs how long I thought it would take) to improve my planning skills over time.
It also helps not to get frustrated if you work for a micromanager and they constantly interfere with your carefully laid out plans. As long as you keep up the planning process and at least accomplish part or some of those plans, you're doing good.👍✨🌹
Thanks Mariana! This is exactly what I was looking for as the Pomodoro technique/timer never actually gives me enough time, and with the flow technique I always took too much break time. I will totally be using this for all of my studying and hobby-related tasks!
Sarah, I was thinking the same... too rigid. I have to keep flexible even for all the work I do and for my channel (nature sleep sounds). Happy early Christmas! 🎄
This describes my workflow exactly! I am easily distracted so when I enter flow state I just couldn't afford to take short/regular breaks that don't feel like breaks at all. Learning to let go of the rigidity of 25-minute intervals of work and shifting instead to logging my flow time in a notebook (I write the beginning and end time per focus period and what task I did) helped me tremendously. I also became more aware of how I use my time. 😊 Thank you for this video, Mariana!
Wow, this is what I was looking for! I'm graphic designer and Pomodoro technique is just not working when you get into flow state. Concept of "flomodoro" is much more natural and suitable for design work. You clarified it well here, thank you! :)
Same here, Sinisa. I find the Pom 25 minutes too rigid. I have to keep flexible even for all the work I do and for my channel (nature sleep sounds). Happy early Christmas! 🎄
Yeah, I also noticed that when I tried to use the pomodoro technique. When the time is up, you get interrupted from your flow/momentum. What I do instead is I tackle one task then once I'm done with it, I take 10 mins break before doing the next task.
I recommend using an app like flip for this with notification setting turned off for focus time and on for break. So you will not be notified when the 25 minutes are over and the timer continues measuring. So you stay in the flow state. When you are done or feel like taking a break , you can stop the timer. And you will be notified after the break time (5 or 10 minutes , set manually by you) is over. So you repeat the thing again.
I pretty much came to the conclusion a few weeks ago that I need to go back to unstructured time, the only difference being that I used to know when to take breaks naturally, my body just told me to. But society intervened with its demands and I started ignoring my needs. I'm basically going back to what worked naturally for me, which other people told me was wrong! I'm thinking of how to do my to dos, again any kind of forced structure backfires, it goes against the grain and is forcing, so I'm experimenting with scripting and brain dumps for now. I will see what takes. I used to just have a notebook where I wrote things down in a messy scrawl on any available space on the page, and would only go to a new page when when there was no room to write, and somehow would remember. I rarely referenced the notebook, it was pretty difficult to find anything, but sometimes I'd see a phrase that would jog my memory. It wasn't really for reference it was for the act of focusing on what I needed to remember so I'd recall it later. I don't trust relying entirely on memory, because with aging and decline that can go, but maybe for now it's not a bad exercise.
Your videos are always to the point. I wonder why are you not available to many people. I want you to be standing with millions of subscribers ❤️❤️. Lots of appreciation and love from India🇮🇳
As a law student you force yourself to keep in the zone when studying, take a break after 2hours get up walk, drink.. But you have to stay in the zone and focus, in the "flow". Meaning no short breaks.
I sometimes listen to self-help books and I felt quite surprised when in one book they once recommended working in 25-minute chunks and the other time in 90-minute chunks (to get into the flow state). I guess the original pommodoro technique is better for studying than work.

This is a great video Mariana. Learned something new today, Thank you! My process of writing pushes me to go on and when I am in a ZONE the time is relative, however it is difficult to manage time each day like that. Why do you thing that happens?
So the ABCD system is more focused on how to prioritize tasks and the Eisenhower is more on how to categorize those tasks (as well as an action model). With the Eisenhower method, you decide when to “do”, “decide”, “delegate” and “delete” a task, while the ABCD system only helps you prioritizing your tasks, and it does that on a daily basis. ABCD doesn’t rely as much on urgency, while the Eisenhower method does. Overall, I think the Eisenhower method can be great for a lot of corporate jobs and positions where you are actually able to decide what to do with the items in your list, while the ABCD system is better for all of those can’t actually delete tasks or delegate them but still need to know how to prioritize them on a daily basis

Thanks for this video it was really interesting!
I love both of these concepts! The Pomodoro technique always gets me through monotonous work!

I feel like leaning into flow state is great for creative projects, but frequent short breaks sure makes things like housework more tolerable 😅
