James man, is the man. I've always respected this man.. He started the weather news the year I was born apparently. He's incredibly intelligent, a scientist at heart,.. likes gadgets, likes tech..
This man CARES.. he goes out of his way to help people as he is truly passionate about these things. We are lucky in Alabama in the Birmingham Market (but Spann tries his best to cover as much of the state he can.. His memory of the state geography is nothing short of amazing lol..).
I can't say enough positive things about the guy. Is a shame he can't be around for another 40 years on air.. and I don't see another guy like him in our market. He is right though, and "gets it".. things are changing, we may not know exactly how it will end up despite what we think,.. but he doesn't cling to the broadcasting on-air model for dear life he embraces the future and what the generation behind him.. essentially my generation will do with things and then the generation behind us.. etc. Something I personally struggle with a bit as I'm in my 30's if I'm honest (Feel old) :)
    Anyhow, nice talk Spann!

Living legend. I'm not from Alabama, but wow I don't know if there's any better. Heart of gold. He really took initiative to try and change the field of weather, to look at it in different ways to save as many lives as possible. He saw that the broadcasting, the warnings, everything was extremely well done, but it just wasn't enough. It really feels like he spearheaded the initiative to get all future death tolls down. He genuinely cares, I don't get the sense that he knows how to "act" good or a certain way, he just is good. This man is a purely good person, and we need more like him.

One big reason so many didn’t survive it is because they didn’t have a basement or some underground shelter. In an EF4-EF5 a ground level only home is just as useless and unsafe as standing outside waiting for the storm to take you aloft. Plus the poverty riddled trailer parks and slab foundation homes. It wasn’t your fault. It was the homes these people lived in that was the problem. So much lazy and misguided construction on homes in our nation causes so much senseless devastation that could’ve been easily preventable. Human error is the root of the majority of human deaths.

Spann is my favorite meteorologist, and I'm a North Alabama native so I deal with local weather news. But every day I watch James Spann with his weather xtreme videos that he post 2 times a day on TH-cam, and I don't want to get my weather from any other weather man! James Spann is the MAN! And I would suggest anyone who wants to know weather, especially Alabama weather, you need to get James Spann loaded! He is the greatest, and I appreciate him very, very much! THANK YOU JAMES SPANN! And remember everyone, not every weather man gets an accurate report, so don't always go by the weather report, stay weather alert people! Pay attention yourselves, you can, and you are more than capable of knowing wether or not a bad situation is possible. I LOVE SPANN, JES THE BEST, AND ALWALYS WILL BE! GOD BLESS HIM!

Thanks to this kind of talk... And the work of Spann and so many other meteorologist, we have made warnings even easier for people to receive. Just look at your phone when a tornado warning happens in your area. It goes off and lets you know without even downloading a weather app. I thank Spann and the meteorologists for these innovations that have helped save lives even more than in the past. God Bless them. And God Bless anyone who reads this.

That's absolutely true, but unfortunately a lot of people ignored warnings as well. And many of those that didn't ignore warnings instead went outside and waited to visually confirm the tornado before taking cover. It's terrible to know that, although survival isn't guaranteed even when every step is taken, oftentimes people don't take the warnings seriously to begin with. If anything good can come of such tragedy, hopefully that's it -- taking warnings more seriously and having a plan.

I agree bout his assessment that at most it's better 2 show folks actual video of the storm approaching as 2 where folks will just pass on being shown radar, I guess maybe in a way because some won't appreciate the read of what that radar means.... while I'm in no way a meteorologist, I did pay attention at least enough 2 know what u NEVER wanna find on radar on a storm in ur path is a hook, which strongly indicates a tornado headed near u, being from Detroit we've had many near misses thru the years, the closest one I remember was back in 96 when a significant storm touched off a tornado that skipped around our area, but got as close as Hamtramack... while it was short it did do some noted damage... think I was 23 at the time, but years later in observing how folks did weather that's when I started learning of the hooks....
I truly appreciate how James Spann out of something so personally tragic 4 him and all those who were hit and lost loved ones really chose 2 take the time & share educate and even laugh a little. There aren't many like this guy..... 💯

Outstanding Video James. I agree completely. Especially with COMMUNICATING with your audience. I enjoy talking with my fans. Also, I do not like Auto-Feed Warnings. Its impersonal and uninformative. Thank you for all that you do. You are right on the money. Keep fighting the good fight ! Social Media is the way of the future.

I remember this day, its been almost 10 years now, and this is the most vivid memory of my 1st grade year (I was 6 almost 7, and now I'm 16 almost 17). I had just moved to Hartselle at the time (right above Cullman) and we happened to have a tornado shelter (not many people did where we lived). We didn't get hit, but we had friends very close to the Tuscaloosa EF5. I also had a friend that was very close to a tornado in Decatur.

He asks why so many people died during that tornado outbreak, but let me tell you this. At the time of the outbreak I worked for a Harley Davidson dealership and went to pick up damaged motorcycles in Tuscaloosa and Hueytown after the storm, and after seeing the severity of the damage, I can't believe hundreds more people didn't die. The destruction was unbelievable.

@smitken Why did so many people die? It was one of the most violent tornadoes in Alabama history. It is hard to survive a direct hit from an EF-4 or EF-5 tornado even if you do all the right things.

Nick Jones My son’s Fiancé had driven back to campus to show off her engagement ring on that fateful day. Sadly, she was hit with debris and was killed. My son (a brand new neurosurgeon) had to take her off life support. That almost killed my son with grief.
