It's funny, and unfortunate, that so many people don't dig Duke. After all, Miles sure did, he knew he was indebted to the Jazz Immortals, and he knew that without them he would likely not exist. In 2019 and forward, I suggest that we try to get with, and stay with great jazz. Many of us have traveled just such a simple and similar path with food, cigarettes, wine, etc. At first, we likely did not like those things! Stay with Jazz!, it leads to free and enlightened thinking!
He is revered in the jazz world as are the countless musicians who played in his bands. His music is considered far more accessible than Miles or Mingus-mingus worshipped Duke -even after Duke fired him.Who are these critics you talk about?
I saw Duke Ellington's orchestra play at a theatre in Leeds England in 1964. They played a two hour set starting at 8:00 PM. they then played a two hour encore that ended at Midnight.
my late stepfather heard and saw plenty of Jazz greats in Copenhagen KB Hallen, he almost shed a tear when he heard they had caught fire some yrs ago!he was born in 1930 and saw them plenty of times in his youth!his passion was Opera but Jazz had his smiles, but large operas had his tears when the main character belted out their love only to be doomed!

There was a Casa Loma in Montreal during the 50-60s . Duke performed there along with Miles Davis. If I remember correctly, Duke also performed at The Esquire Show. Bar.
Ellington was at Casa Loma Cafe twice in 1964 and once in 1965, in its upstairs Le Jazz Hot room . The Esquire Show Bar run was July 7 to 13, 1969, You can find other Montreal appearances at tdwaw.ca (The Duke - Where and When).
No, this is the upstairs room of Casa Loma Cafe at 94 St. Catherine E., Montreal, known as Le Jazz Hot. I don't think I've documented an Ellington appearance yet at the Casa Loma in Toronto, but he did appear in 1949 at Casa Loma Ballroom in Charleston, WVa. I don't have the Toronto venue in tdwaw.ca (The Duke - Where and When); please let me know if you have evidence of an Ellington appearance there.
But this is not Montreal. Duke refers to Casa Loma which is in Toronto. There is a French language voice over which also refers to Casa Loma and this tells me it was a rebroadcast for French language CBC TV.

Several of the band members worked with Duke for decades and most for years. They knew the music - but it was always fresh. If they were sometimes a little tired, it's understandable; they lived on the road. For instance, they returned from 35 days overseas in late March, and played in 14 cities in the United States and Canada before this performance on April 20.

The musicians seem a bit bored - but God knows for which time they are doing this potpourri
They don't sound bored, though - and Hodges always looked like that!
Just relaxed.
Caravan - trumpet solo Cootie Williams
That’s Cootie Williams featured on Caravan. Cat is the very first Soloist on the very first song.
The Rabbit looks bored to death. Sam can't tie his bow and the presenter is out of the Fast Show. Great. Mmmmm.
As a french speaking jazz amateur, I can tell that the french voice over is quite shit at translating what the duke is saying.
Big Mouth
Lol
Here from big mouth
Thanks a lot Emilio Perez !! What a swing. Duke was so amazing.
