    When I was younger I thought big band was boring and just couldn't get into it... I must have been insane. Ellington and all his soloists are just incredible. My eyes have been opened and I'll never be the same. I love this music.

    • @ubertar
      @ubertar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cadesmandela1935 Sophistication wasn't the issue... as a young man, I loved Sun Ra, Anthony Braxton, John Coltrane's later, far-out stuff with his wife Alice, not to mention Bach, Beethoven and that crowd. Big band just seemed bland and stodgy. But now I see the depth there.

    there’s an amazing mysteriousness to his early work; like a barely tangible darkness behind the beauty. I love it.

      Right, right, that mysticism is hard to find and is what i love about his early work.

      facts, Duke’s early work plays a lot with dissonance giving it an almost sinister quality at times. The mute on East St. Louis Toodle-oo (1927) comes to mind, love this man

      Hi, Glad you've enjoyed the album - and the track list issue is resolved :-) This compilation has been obsolete as a CD for many years now but your comment prompted me to search for the original info ... and I've found the booklet notes. If you'd like to let me have your email address I can forward a copy to you, they're brilliantly informative - with even the musicians names per track. Kathy - office@pastperfect.com

    There is a relationship here between the way a lot of guitar players prefer to use older types of tube driven amplifiers. The quality of the sound is distinctly different from that of the more recent types of transistor only driven amplifiers. Here the distinctive qualities of the much older recording equipment contributes in a very similar way to the sound quality. The white noise generated gives a quality of warmth that is missing with just transistors, though to be honest, if one heard these performed live it would sound both a good bit different and probably very much more impressive. For my tastes, nothing comes close to the live instruments in a relatively small practice space.
