I remember Alpha Beta, Lucky's, Ralph's, Von's, and Albertsons, all when I was growing up. Happy Holidays Babble Top! 😎👍🎄⛄🎁🎉

When I met my first wife, she was a union cashier (Retail Clerks, now part of SEIU) at a Hinky Dinky in Omaha, NE in 1980.

In northern California we had PW Supermarkets - which was a family chain and didn't stand for Piggly Wiggly or Pink and White! Also Food Villa and Fry's, which later turned into an electronics business for some reason! Haha!

Fry's was always a grocer. Three of their sons branched out and started Fry's Electronics in 1985. The elder Fry sold off Fry's Food and Drug decades ago but the name was kept. The electronics chain is dead meat; the stores are abandoned.

Bruno's was a strong grocery chain in the Southeast for many years with Food World, Foodmax, and Foodfair under their belt as well. Those stores almost dominated the Alabama grocery market for many decades. I grew up shopping Food World and Foodmax. Bruno's were more in the larger Alabama cities but Food Worlds were throughout Alabama with a few Foodmax stores in the state and surrounding states

Here in South Florida Publix is buying up every thing. Safeways and Albertsons disappeared from here. Save-A-Lot is also gone.

Our Save-A-Lot stores are gone too along with several other smaller grocery stores including Food Lion and Ingles. I think Walmart and Kroger put them all out of business.

At least Publix is employee owned

I’m just barely old enough to remember farmer jack’s in metro Detroit. Older people love to reminisce about how good it was.

I remember. We had on Eight mile and Lahser around the corner from us. Got my first crab meat stick from there when I was like 7. I thought I was bougie!😂

A&P is the only one I ever saw; my grandmother used to shop there. They used to plug their Eight O'Clock Coffee in some of their ads.

Yeah when they had the coffee grinder, I can still smell it. Ummm

Drucker's General Store in Hooterville. Old Sam had just about everything. You get it it at a good price if you got there before Mr. Hainey bought it all up and loaded it up on his truck.

In the midwest there was also Eagle's foods and Randal's foods which closed down. In Chicago I was with Dominix until it closed. It was more expensive but it was the first market I went to when I moved here so I never checked out the others until I had to.

    • @dalethelander3781

Dominick's was great. Clean stores, and a good planogram for merchandise layout. We had one in Elgin. Dominick's was still in operation when I moved to L.A. in 94.

All US focussed, doesn't include other similarly sized markets worldwide (e.g. Safeway UK, Somerfield UK, Gateway UK, Victor Value UK, William Low UK, Lyons), Kipa (Turkey), Homeplus (KR)

Ar 13:53, the announcer in the A & P spot was Rolle Farrar, AKA :Tiger Bob Raleigh" on WPGC AM & FM in Morningside, MD, which was considered to be a D.C. station.

We had a stupid bon mot when I was a kid, "let's go to the A and P, then go to the Y and shit."
I told you it was stupid.

Old Dominick's were awesome, then came Safeway, all the original employees left. Yup, found expired milk on the shelf, never went back.

I live in Saint Louis, and the grocery market here is so cutthroat and insular, that none of the chains in this video could get a foot in.

In the state of PA, school-property taxes kill a lot of businesses and generally stifle economic growth.
