      I just always do 7 days if the food is cooked. I eat it within 7 days. Also- I just wanted to mention that there is a movie called Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story. It's actually here on youtube free to watch. Anyone can look up the trailer as well. It's about how much food goes to waste. It was very very shocking and disturbing. I highly recommend watching it.

    Lived in Switzerland on the streets for many years. I was constantly finding the day old sandwiches that were perfectly fine and tasty in plastic boxes behind the shops. I was so charmed by the country that I even helped the delivery guy when he showed up in the morning by organising the pallette he needed to remove. You can see me doing this in the video on my channel. I also got more stuff from a kiosk at the station where the owner just started giving them to me. In return I went there every morning to carry the empty boxes for 🥐 and doughnuts to the recycling at the other end of the station.
    Here in England it is the complete opposite, I have seen people getting 7 years in prison for stealing milk for their kids, but the mandatory sentence for a third time offender is always implemented.
    Never stole anything myself, and most the other Swiss homeless people didn't either because of the readily available food from the bins. The staff would usually make sure that all the edible waste was put in clean plastic bags so we could recoup it. I still think that food is being used as a weapon against the majority of us, poisonous additives and packaging.
    Anyway, take care and feed the sparrows.

    Dates are not that important on canned goods as long as the can is in good shape. I recently had a can of green beans I found in the pantry that was 3 years past the best buy date. They looked good, smelled good, I cooked them and they tasted just as they should. Milk and cottage cheese is usually good for up to a week after the date. Smell it. Use your senses to see if something is still good. Hard cheese can be good for a long time past date. Eggs stay good for a good while.

    If something has mold in it, I'm not picking it off and eating the rest, I'm throwing the whole thing out 🤮. The best thing to do is not to buy in excess; buy the amount of food you and your family will eat will eliminate food waste!!! I see so many people hoarding food.
    If it's not perishable, the date is mostly for quality. It's ok to eat that bag of chips past the date on the bag! But the ultimate thing you need to ask yourself is, why did you buy so many or buy it at all where it sat so long to reach that date?

      This is some of the grossest advice I've ever come across and IMO complete bs. My local grocery has raw meat that starts turning brown before it even hits its expiration date. Can't imagine eating it after. And every time I accidently eat something even very recently expired, I'm on the toilet for a really long time a few hours later. These companies do a lot of testing and have very good knowledge of when their product will start making you sick. How is it in any way healthy for you to be testing the limits of when food will make you sick?
      The only time this is good advice is when you're one step away from homelessness and literally cannot afford fresh food.

    Good Info. For me, milk and Dairy products, Baby Formula etc. Spoil much faster than other foods. Some Breads also. It is amazing how long Flour Tortillas last. And Sour Dough Bread too. Light and Heat is also a problem with Foods. Of course a Basement is the best place to store Food. Always Cool and Dry. I use expired canned Goods all the time.
    But always use Caution and Common Sense. Especially with Raw Meat.
    Always Freeze your Raw Meat for any kind of Storage. You can Refrigerate for a Few Days, but no longer than that. That's my little two cents on the matter of Food. Always use Caution.

    Some things not addressed, the format on dates are somewhat confusing, especially in Canada, some dates are MMDDYY, YYYY MM DD some are DDMMYY, Some use the notation BB/MA (Best Before/Meilleur avant)? (updated) Anyway, I found some helpful things when reading months:
    JA: January
    FE: February
    MR: March
    AL: April
    MA: May
    JN: June
    JL: July
    AU: August
    SE: September
    OC: October
    NO: November
    DE: December

      Yes. The dates are different due to each company’s requirements. I work at a packaging plant. Certain companies are very specific about the expiration date and others just have a time frame and we use our own set pattern. And yes, the Canadian products are the only ones I’ve seen that have that specific code. There are also companies that require a Julian code date ( which means it’s the day of the year)

    In my experience the most serious food quality problem is not the use by date. It is how the food has been stored and handled getting it to the customer.
    If you're shelf stable food has been sitting in a shipping container reaching temperatures well above 100° for hours or days or weeks that food may no longer be good food. Or if food has been sitting warm on a cart in the stores back room and then is placed in a cooler it may no longer be good food. So you always have to depend on your experience and your ability to observe the quality.
    In 70 years I have had food poisoning three times each time it was from a restaurant. The Experience can be very bad. At first you're afraid you will die and then you are afraid that you won't die.
    In past Generations it was very common to point to Summer Complaint, as a minor illness. The cause was because Refrigeration didn't exist and the food was spoiling.
    Since covid I have noticed that a lot of food on our shelves has no use by date anymore. Also that a lot of food well within its use by date is obviously spoiling.

      Did you know that most flu cases are actually food poisoning. People keep lunch meats beyond the 3 days etc. With that said...canned goods...I most recently moved and had to store my belongings including all my canned goods in a very HOT storage unit. I was concerned about seals popping and food spoilage. DID NOT HAPPEN. Food was in the Unit for over a month in the heat of summer above 100 degree's in that unit. Food passed the smell test, the seal test and the visual test. I am happy to say all the food was consumed with no illness nor was the flavor compromised.

    In 1996 when my mother died, I inherited a case ( of 25 cans) of Ensure™, a vitamin fortified elder-care milkshake. It was 2 years away from expiration. The warnings about discarding the product were very specific and in bold type, on the side of each can. (Beyond what is typically written on many food stuffs). They aren't all that great tasting, and are designed for seniors, who may be dying, or are chronically ill. Because they are so extra fortified with vitamins, it seemed like it would have been a colossal waste, for me to, not try to drink them up. Not tasty enough for me to want to drink one each day, I tried my best to consume them before they expired. This product doesn't need refrigeration, until it is open. However they are only palatable, when they are chilled. I was shocked, that they became immediately un-drinkable, one day after they expired. (barely 24 hours) The homogenous liquid milkshake, changed into a lumpy, and semi-slimy, goo. I opened the other cans, thinking it was a fluke, and perhaps only one can was compromised. NOPE,...they all had transformed into a lumpy, gooey, (gross) solution, (overnight). Luckily I only had to toss out 10 cans. (So unpalatable, to a person who isn't sick, I found it to be a real challenge for me, to drink them up. lol)

    @johnnymartinjohansen ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Here was a few things that are not quite correct, but I'll only comment on two of them:
    Freeze burn isn't the only issue with frozen foods. Absolutely everything in the freezer will spoil at some point, it just takes a long time. And anything containing fat can be spoiled quite quickly (depends on fat type). For example, frozen white fish will start to turn yellow, usually when frozen at least 6 months (in most cases longer, though). When this happens, it will smell sour as hell if defrosted, and will be slimy, so don't bother - simply toss it if you see it's yellow.
    Mold. Never ever eat anyting with mold, except certain cheese that are supposed to have it. The reason is, even if you carve away the molded part, the mold isn't gone, since most types of mold have long roots going deep into the product. Those roots alone can be dangerous.

    I noticed the expiration dates on bottles of Fairlife milk were three months out from when it was bottled. I found out why is that the milk is ultra-pasteurized with an additional step that very briefly shoots the temperature of the milk up a few extra degrees. As an experiment I kept a couple bottles of Fairlife milk for three months past the expiration date on the cap. It was perfectly fine. I then bought three gallons of Great Value whole milk and put it in the fridge in the basement. I opened one gallon two months past the expiration date. It was perfectly fine. The second at three months past the expiration date - it was perfectly fine. Four months past the expiration date - it was perfectly fine. Never asked, but I assume other milk bottlers do the same step as Fairlife but just don't advertise it. If after two weeks you think it has gone bad you pitch it and buy more. So in this case with milk, it appears to be a gimmick.

      I think lactose-free milk has a longer shelf-life then regular milk, were both brands LF?

      @DoubleDogDare54 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angstymedusa No. The Great Value milk is the Walmart store brand and is regular milk.

      were the milk containers unopened?

    • @DoubleDogDare54
      @DoubleDogDare54 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lisa_MS64 Unopened and kept refrigerated. I put them in the extra fridge downstairs and did not touch them until I opened them months later. Once I opened them I used the milk in the same period of days I would have had I bought it fresh from the store. No difference in quality, taste, smell, texture from a gallon of milk you would buy, take home and immediately open and use.

    Decades ago a woman appeared on The Tonight Show with her book "The Joys of Carrion Eating". During the interview she gave a line that stayed with me: "As long as you cook it well done, no matter how bad it smells, it can't hurt you."

      not necessarily correct:in some cases, the waste products from the germs can be hazardous, cooking a spoiled piece of food thoroughly may very well kill the germs, but the waste products will remain-the heating likely will not deactivate them.
