Never judge a book by its cover. I saw a dated looking video with an older women and almost passed on it because I thought I needed someone with tattoos that looked like a rock star to teach me music theory for playing guitar. Decided to watch. Fantastic teacher. Well explained and love the humor and vibe. Subscribed👍
In 10 minutes just listening to pieces of her videos, I've learned scales, chords and what the heck a circle of fifth's is for. WOW! Thank you. I'll save these for the weekend and study harder.
I've been putting off music theory for years and years and now I'm finally here, having learnt so much in only a few days. Thank you so much - you're doing the lord's work for me.
I'm unsure whether it's your teaching method, or just the simplicity with which you discuss all your topics, but I have found your videos to be the most helpful of any.
This lady is phenomenal to say the least. Worth her weight in gold with respect to the absolute ease in getting me to understand this concept. I am a beginner at age 62 . Never picked up a guitar. I am learning theory presently as I am very analytical and I find music language quite satisfying to know. Thankyou !
I love your way of teaching, I've been only playing by ear since young, taught by my dad, but when working with computer DAW's i needed learn it, and I tried so many until I got to yours. It is amazing. That was years ago now, I teach people your way (hope you don't mind), tho thru pandemic i couldn't so I had send the links of these to them. It is so simple out of all I've seen it is truly great. I wish you were in England when was young, you're an amazing teacher. I'd love to see myself, but I think you deserve much more credit than have. As you have totally helped so many of my own too. So you are a musical learning inspiration. I'd like to say Thank You, Karen XX
Thank you.. I've been playing by ear for years and this is the very first time I actually understood someone teaching theory. Wish you were local I love to learn more from you :)
Thanks a lot Karen! Wonderful explanation, I was stuck there for quite some time, since I don't have a teacher, I am self learning. You are a great teacher. Keep up the good work, if you are still reading the comments after 9 years.
I've watched three videos from this woman and I have learned more from her in the last hour than I've learned from any other teacher or book. Must take time to process. If I learn any more today I'll barf...
You know, because this video is so old, I didn't think It would be a good watch. But after actually watching it, I was so wrong! She's a great teacher and this was easily understood!
I have been trying to figure this out for days and this video made it click in my head - so simple the way you explain it, thank you for thiese videos!
She has such a sweet personality, and she's easy to understand. Thanks for sharing. I learned something new that I've already been trying to figure out, and she made it so easy.
This is the best music TH-cam lesson. She is so far my best music teacher. I have learn all the basic adv pro music (guitar) theory from her video. Just want to say you r great Grand ma. Yes, it named Grand ma theory of music.
Wow! I wish I had you as a music teacher when I was a kid. Your teaching method is clear and simple, and your enthusiasm is catching. I am subscribing.
Gradus Quia dear of course this is for newbies..your comment was so WHHAAAATTT... Karen I can tell ya how much I am excited your GREAT..FANTASTIC..keep it up
It's an abuse of newbies. It'll take you 10 years to figure out why, if you tried really hard. Some thoughts are just that big. And your mind is so small...
Dude I’ve been playing guitar for 4 for years and I’ve gone from shredding to chromatic jazz soloing with people and this has made it so much easier Idk why I didn’t learn this sooner
please keep us updated with your educational videos I work full time 6 days per week you are my educational lifeline learning theory and to play the keys
Thank you for your help. I'm learning ukulele and was struggling to find a way to relate this. You have helped me to have an epiphany too. If only music teachers had been like you
Thats very good method to understand & remember The connection between major/minor scales & chords. One more thing to know: the six note on a major scale is the root note For his parallel minor scale. Example C= A minor D = Bm E = Cm F = Dm G = Em A = F#m B = G#m
Great video!! Such a simple way of explaining the system!! Been playing for years and never really bothered with theory as i mainly play all by ear so this was a good way to get on my theory ladder ;) thanks
Its because of the way chords are made. the first note being the root note, which is also the chord's "first name" C for instance, than you add a rank 3 and 5 to the C. as shown in the lesson, C-E-G. for the chord to be major, you need the interval between 1 and 3 to be four semitones, and between 3 and 5 to be 3 semi tones. when you have that you get a major. the minor chord, its 3 semitones and after 4 semitones. that's basicly whats on the board. go over each note andtry building the chord
Try to use four notes instead of three. Then you'll notice for example G-B-D-F you get a Dominant 7th. The distance from B-F ( F-B if you invert) is three whole steps, which is called a tritone. If you play C-E-G then C-F-A (2nd inversion of the 4 chord F) then go back to C-E-G. After that play B-(D)-F-G (first inversion G chord with now added Fnote) then end on C-E-G. The D (the 5th of G) may be omitted. Tthe tritone for G (B-F or F-B gives tension, which resolves when the C chord is played.
I comment vary rarely and i think your way of teaching forced me to say that i fall in love with you...!!! Awesome.. I wish i would had learned from you in the past...Thanks for uploading your tutorial on Internet and sharing the knowledge with us...You are not only a great teacher but also a great human being. and most important you love what you teach and that inspired me too to be always happy and to live each moment..Thank you..Thank you..Thank you!!!
Same here (although I started learning recorders in primary school (UK) when I was about 5 or 6 years of age, I now play the flute (and have been since I was 11 - I'm now 43 and it's only now I'm being taught theory! I think if my teachers would have spent more time on the theory side of things I would have advanced a lot more quickly!
She is demonstrating that if you take any of the (11) major scales and build up the three note chords (called Triads ) then you always get a Major chord on the first note Min chord on 2nd note , Min on 3rd note , Maj on 4th , maj on 5th min on 6th and dim on 7th this is identical for all major keys So for example if the key is Db all the chords are the same as those in the key of C but moved up one semi tone .if you are a guitarist and can play barre chords try this and it should be obvious
All this time I spent struggling, trying to figure out how scale coords worked, and the solution is literally just every other note? I'm a little annoyed, but so relieved and happy that I know how it works now.
Because the 3 notes in a Major triad (3 note chord) are separated by 4 semitones (half-steps / frets) between the bottom 2 notes, and 3 semitones between the top 2. If you move up 4 semitones from C you get to E. Then up 3 more is G = C-E-G... But if you start on A and move up 4 semitones you get to C#, then up another 3 is E = A C# E... Minor chords are the other way round - 3 on the bottom and 4 on the top. Diminished is 3 and 3, Augmented is 4 and 4. :-)

a 1-4-5 progression in the key of E would yield: E-A-B
E: (E-G#-B) A:(A-C#-E) B:(B-D#-F#)
And has 4 sharps in the key, all listed directly above...
