      It seems counter-intuitive to me to not use your strongest (index) finger in your grip. Why did you stop using it as your fulcrum and how have you found making the adjustment? :)

      @@RealBesty I used to think that too, but then I noticed cats like Colaiuta, Deitch, DiCense, etc having relatively looser grips with the forefinger, especially during double-strokes.

      @@larkstonguesinaspic4814 bruh don't worry about the accents in the begging the grip used for buzz rolling is literally the same for double stroke but instead of pushing the stick into the drum to create a buzz have a lighter hold allowing a rebound you double the stroke

    Man Rob, you’re great. My drum teacher I had 40 years ago should have had you for an instructor. I’ve watched about 10 of your videos and I’m really impressed. I’m not happy with some of TH-cam’s policies but man how guys like Rob are brought to the masses is fantastic. Intelligence, communication skill, musicianship, and a sense of humor (just watched a video where Rob had his timer for some ribs he was smoking ... awesome). Quite a unique, very likable talent. Thanks for doing what you are doing. My kit was collecting dust for 5 years... it’s not now.

    Hey Rob, I started on drums over 20 years ago & learnt by ear as best as i could.. never had a lesson or knew other drummers (lived in a remote area of Australia) .... I never knew what rudiments etc. even were - but always wanted to improve my playing. So your videos are amazing to me! I really enjoy your approach, style and have a sense of connection watching you. It inspired me to get a new kit & also use my electro kit for practice. I feel like I've improved even before I try your exercises! So thanks again, just wanted to show my appreciation. Look fwd to yr Next video! Thx mate.

    Back in the 60s we read magazines instead of looking at youtube videos and I can recall reading maybe in Downbeat Magazine a drummer comment on the lovely double stroke roll another drummer (that other drummer could have been Joe Morello because Brubeck's "Take Five" helped introduce Joe as a big shot drummer and Morello had a wonderful roll). He commented that he supposed the other drummer was accenting the second beat just a little more. As for me, I was having difficulty "crushing" the roll. I found playing in 3 helped me crush it. Then I went on to the crush roll in 2. I could have used your videos back in the 60s, but then, that was before you were born! Keep up the good work.

    Thats how im learning, and trying to get my blast beats tighter, totally agree with this,.
    Im a truck driver, so when stuck in traffic, or on a longer journey, theres enough room near my gear stick, to be able to practice , using this technique, with the left arm and a stick, on the side of the trucks dash, feels the same as a practice pad. just getting the bounce even as i can, and for me , as fast as i can has made such a difference.
    Also, its a thing for the double kicks too, the second bounce on the kick when doing doubles/heel toe, also has to be the equal as the first, unless doing awesome things using the heel toe mixed with singles.,

  • @eccentricorgan
    @eccentricorgan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Interesting approach with the first exercise...I've seen a similar approach where you accent the second stroke with each hand, but it was much more emphasized. Almost as if you are a robot if that makes sense. I appreciate your suggested way of doing it, seems more natural. There's a video clip of Jim Chapin talking about the moeller technique and how your grip changes when doing single strokes as you go faster. With your first example, I now see a similar thing now applied to double strokes. Good stuff and thanks for sharing!

    You can do the same thing with tripple stroke rolls, if you set your metronome to 3/4 with the accent on the third beat, you throw, bounce with fingers to support the stroke and then catch at the end of the rebound. Been using it a lot and seen real improvement with it. Love your videos.

    • @tootallforbaseball
      @tootallforbaseball 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael, the secret to unscrewing your doubles lies in the WRIST, not the fingers. At tempo, you don't snap your fingers at all, so why is this exercise at a slow tempo going to help at a fast tempo? It does not. Rob actually does not snap his fingers at all at 7:55. The snapping exercise is only really good for practicing a shuffle beat. At tempo, your wrist breaks a little more, and you work with the rebound. The idea is to use as little effort as possible and make the stick do the work. Your pinky finger has very very little to do with playing, but if you poke it out, it causes tension. It really doesn't do much at all. The secret to a great roll is PLAYING THROUGH THE DRUM, not "to" the drum. Act as if the drum head is 3" lower than what it is, play through the drum and be loose. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS AT SPEED. There is NO snapping of the fingers at speed with an open roll.
