    If the “second note” in your doubles isn’t happening on its own, you’re doing something wrong. The thing is, double stroke rolls are not that hard - especially if you let physics do its job. I’ll break this down for you, and we’ll watch some slow motion footage. We’ll learn how to let physics play that second note for you so that you can play doubles with half the effort. This is the only way to speed up a double stroke roll. I hope you enjoy! By the way, if you’re still struggling with the whole “loose grip” or “letting-the-stick-bounce” thing, go back and review the previous lesson where we talked about just that. Make sure your loose, smooth grip is squared away before really tackling doubles.
    Here's the previous video in the series, all about achieving a loose, relaxed grip:

    Most people can snap out decent sounding doubles on a snare in a relatively short time...There are very few that can snap out clean doubles on a heavily de-tuned floppy 16 inch tom with zero rebound. It stops being about rebound and relies on how good your finger work is to pick up the stick and force the second stroke. The only way I've found to improve and get close to decent doubles is a LOT of work using a pillow instead of a practice pad. If you can snap out good doubles on a pillow, you will do well on the Toms....In virtually every Pro video I've watched in which they have nearly perfect doubles they mention the implement of practice on a pillow. There really is no substitute in my opinion..
    ..and the vast majority of people practice doubles on the snare or practice pad 99% of the time and then go back to the drawing board when their doubles suck on the toms.. You should use the worst environment to practice.

    That slow 'mo is everything. I've been using French technique since I started self taught, and had tendon problems relating to bad technique and have been struggling to make the switch. I'm totally jealous watching people play doubles on non-rebound objects like pillows and their leg etc - and just don't get it. But the slow mo at the end here is a game changer in terms of understanding how to hold the stick in the American grip and how the fingers work to force the second hit accent - just gotta make it happen. Saved - and thanks

      Aldo, I began drumming in 1988 and outside of playing trumpet and snare in middle and high school, I was entirely self taught by ear on my first "real" set of drums. Although I never had a large lapse in time where I didn't practice on pillows, I spent years without drums. Thanks to TH-cam videos like this one, my playing and practicing techniques have given me new colors with which to paint my percussive canvas! Your post was heartwarming and please know that most drummers I have met over the years were overly critical of their level of "talent", minus those who thought they knew it all and didn't know jack, lol. Thanks for your post.

    • @tootallforbaseball
      @tootallforbaseball 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need to use your fingers with a double stroke roll. You bounce the sticks using ONLY your wrist. The fingers just stay on the stick. You play THROUGH the drum, with slightly more bend in the wrist that what is needed to make contact with the head. When you play fast, there is NOT TIME to use fingers, and you can't use fingers when you play fast patterns with doubles. Work on playing evenly without squeezing or accenting the secondary beat or snapping the fingers. It can be done, and that's what all intermediate/advanced players do. They do NOT snap the fingers or use finger control. I demonstrate this here: th-cam.com/video/10DSn3VeJG0/w-d-xo.html

      This is the best way to look at it. Jim Chapin's video and Drum Ape's are the best I've seen on youtube. You HAVE to try and snap that second stroke to try and get it louder than the first in order for it to be even.

  • @abrotherinchrist
    @abrotherinchrist 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed your right hand has a slight double wrist motion on the doubles and your left is just one wrist motion. Is that pretty normal? I noticed my right hand has a slightly different feel to it and this video makes me think perhaps that's normal and I should just get used to it. Or should I be working on trying to make the motions identical?

  • @Ebiru2387
    @Ebiru2387 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Using mathstick grip is it normal for my weak hand to have a SLIGHTLY different grip than my doninant? For example my right hand does doubles like a dream but my left still struggles because my fingers twist the stick and it moves up and down the snare. If i twist my hand a little and my grip i find it feels better. Is that normal? Or should they be identical?

  • @fw72
    @fw72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I wouldn't use this exercise at all. Its like cheating or a quick fix. If you want to improve your doubles, just practice the Stone killer #2 exercise instead. Thomas Lang has a great TH-cam video explaining it. It'll build your chops and strengthen your wrists. No cheating involved. Also, keep your wrists further apart than Stephen here. Keep the sticks at least an 80 degree angle, preferably 90. Palms facing down as much as possible. That is, unless you want recurring tendonitis for the rest of your life. And for all things holy, keep your pinky on the stick. Not to be critical or anything.

    If anyone wants to correctly tune drums, buy a Tune-bot Studio. Make sure you purchase the "Studio" version. Once you have received it, download the Tune-bot app which is a calculator for your snare, bass, individual tom's or a kit as a whole. Check out the app and if you like it, buy the fit in the palm of your hand Tune-bot. It accurate to 0.5 of 1 Hertz.

  • @pccoder
    @pccoder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a couple months shy of playing for 2 years. I feel like I've really hit a wall with regard to speed. I watch these videos, I try to keep nice and loose yet controlled strokes. But regardless of this I can only move my wrists so fast. I keep wondering if using an e-kit is contributing to my problem. In other words am I not getting the same rebound I would expect to receive on real drum heads? Then I find it difficult to manage having enough downward power to my stroke and then using the rebound to set myself up for that next stroke. My drum instructor hasn't been helpful with this. We spend so much time on grooves but seemingly no time on technique. My biggest roadblock is finding any other instructors locally. Either they don't exist or they simply aren't interesting in teaching a 50-year old drummer, despite my willingness and devotion to learn. It's all very frustrating. ;)

    In my experience "squeezing" and "forcing" the one's grip while playing doubles/rebound at any speed will only lead to disadvantages behind the drums. Think of this advice if it were given to a young violinist, "squeeze and force your grip of the bow" ... we drummers will never move forward with a generally acknowledged school of technique for the drumset if we don't start thinking about what we put out as information.

    Ummm, open versus closed stroke, moeller and multibounce versus wrist and finger, matched versus traditional versus French grip, technique used on a nonresponsive versus responsive surface, etc.??
    Sure, this all works well using closed stroke on a responsive snare head, but what about playing open stroke on a pillow or on 18" toms with little rebound? There's a big difference in training your muscle memory to operate from pinching your fulcrum point and controlling rebound, to using and having good open stroke doubles, no matter the surface you're playing on.
    It's all fun and physics, until someone loses their doubles! ;)

  • @tootallforbaseball

    Stephen, you should not use pressure when you are playing the double stroke roll. A much easier method to teach is to play "through" the drum, not "to" the drum, which is what you are doing. What happens is that the wrists bend slightly more than what is required to just make contact with the drum. You are changing the fulcrum point when you do this, which allows you to get an even secondary bounce. Using pressure just teaches bad habits. You can play a double stroke roll evenly and SLOWLY if you play "through" the drum. Using the fingers for the secondary beat is NOT NECESSARY at all. You do not need to squeeze the stick or snap the fingers. The secret is playing through the drum, with that tiny extra follow-through. Finger control exercises do NOT have ANYTHING to do with a double stroke roll. Your best snare drummers are DRUM CORPS players, and they use WRIST ONLY with a follow-through. I demonstrate how all of this is done here: th-cam.com/video/10DSn3VeJG0/w-d-xo.html
