Ciao ragazza! As a second gen Italian American, I am looking to also get my Italian citizenship recognized in 2024. I’m also of siciliano descent. I’m curious to know since you’ve been there for a while… is it uncommon or strange to see Italians of mixed race or “black” Italians in Sicilia o Italia in generale? Not sure if I’d necessarily be welcomed. I’ve been for short vacation but not for a prolonged period of time. Grazie 😊
Ciao ciao! This is a great question and I will try to answer it the best I can. The short answer is that Italy is a diverse country - there are people from all over the world living here and who have lived here for generations! Maybe more prevalent to see in the bigger cities, but in the smaller cities and towns as well. Always it just depends area to area. * I think it is universal that no matter where you go, you will find people who are open and accepting, and others less so (or who haven’t been able to meet people with different backgrounds from them yet). But I think that is a universal truth. And definitely not a reason to hold back from following your dreams! * I am friends with many African people here, so while I do know stories of unfortunate incidents of racism, I would say is it the exception not the norm. And again, unfortunately I think that’s the case anywhere. There are definitely Black, international, diverse communities here. I hope no matter where you go, you will find a place where you feel at home ❤️
