you did not mention that when you start engine the new filter will take oil to fill it thus lowering the amount of oil in the engine and YOU need to check the oil level again and add more oil if necessary!!! This could be very important !
Donavan Aja Thank you for pointing that out. I did notice on mine, the oil drains out of the filter and into the sump when the engine is off, but you should still check it after you run it like you said.
Also - there are markings on the engine showing exactly how much oil they take. This INCLUDES the amount that cycles thru oil filter. Always a good habit to double check but as long as you follow what your engine takes - you’ll be good. You do need to be careful because some engines lie. The new Yamaha VMAX 150 is a good example of that. Calls for 4.3 and it’s closer to 6 if I remember correctly.
Tip for the young players.... If you prime your filter, ie. Pour enough oil into the filter that the media absorbs it, you don't have a big difference in oil level change and you also have oil pressure immediately rather than waiting for the filter to prime as the engine runs.
Thank-you... great video. I have watched a bunch of videos , and a lot of the other ones go way too fast!!! You take it slow and it’s easy to follow. Appreciate it. Gotta get to the store and grab some supplies and change my oil on my merc 60 HP!
Great job. That’s how I change my oil on my 60 hp. Also something I just learned. If you want to get rid of the hard water spots on the motor just use a mixture of 50/50 of white vinegar and water. I was shocked how well it works.
@@clearwaterfishing no, not at all. The one concern I have is that I ordered an oil change kit for the engine that came with filter, a new o-ring for the drain screw, a little plastic deal for directing the oil away from the drain (which I didn’t use, because I went with your advice and trimmed up/turned the motor and it wasn’t needed) and just THREE quarts of oil. After changing it, it looked fine/full on the dipstick, but I’ll certainly check it after running it to make sure more oil isn’t needed. I also had a little cloudiness in my lower unit oil that drained, but it wasn’t bad. Going to do some research on that, but hoping it isn’t a big deal. It wasn’t white by any stretch, but seemed slightly tainted as if there may have been a little water in it. I bought the boat used a year ago and have run it a lot. By the looks of the engine oil (it was very black), both it and the lower lube probably needed changed last year.
@@BobSellersSings I might can help you with the gear lube. If you boat hadn’t been run in a few days before you drained the gear lube, the water would have been the first thing to drain out. The cloudiness could be the lube wasn’t full and got some air mixed in it. If you ran it recently, it would have looked milky. It doesn’t hurt to check after your next trip.
Hey thanks to your videos I was able to do an oil change and lower unit gear lube change for the first time by myself! Would also love to see a video on greasing all parts of the boat!!
Cut the bottom off of an empty oil bottle and make your own funnel. It will take the next full bottle and fit like a glove when you pour it in the engine you will never spill a drop ever again just a trick I use. :)
Thank you so much for this video. The manual I received when I purchased my boat did not have torque specifications for the plug or the filter. Just wondering if that is important to use a torque wrench or not. Thanks again!
Great video. Thanks! I have the same engine except it's a Bigfoot. What type of gas do you recommend? I'm using 93 E10. Fellow boaters are telling me to use non ethanol racing fuel. What do you suggest?
hi i have a mercury likes you, today after i washed the boat, try to run the motor, when key in won't crank, than i turn on star anyway sound like to run, but not, can you tell me what happened ,thanks
I will fill mine to 9.5 or 9.8/10 (max) . So what if you had mercury oil in your outboard put in and you decide to re- add quicksilver bcoz you low on oil. Can you mix mercury oil with quicksilver? Also can you mix 25w40 with 10w-30?
I wouldn’t have an issue mixing brands of oil that are the same weight. I don’t recommend mixing weights of oil. Maybe if it is was a small amount because it was low (which is much better than running it low).
Hello I don’t know if you ever had this issue I have. My boat will not get to plain out under a load. Max RPMs 3000 Would you know. I did fuel pump fillet new gas drained old new spark plugs. no alarms 🚨 or anything like that.the guy that did my oil change. Not sure if he made a mess inside before it was a clean engine compartment. Now it’s wet Thanks 🙏🏾
Well thank you for replying. No it dose not bog out it start up don’t sound bad or anything just wen I go out to get to plain out it dose not go above the 3000 is it. No alarms beeps
I've had this issue twice. Once after I hit a log and bent the prop just a little. The second time I ended up finding my fuel line was pinched. Not sure how it happened but straightening it out got me back to 100%
Mercury recommends every 100 hours, but I don't have an hour meter on mine. I fish 1-2 times a week and I change it once a year. If you fish 3-4 times a week I would change it twice a year.
4 quarts seems too high. For my Mercury 2008 60 hp 4 stroke, 3 liters or 3.2 quarts of 10W30 recommended by the manual. Checked at www.mercruiserparts.com/oil-capacity-chart-4-stroke-outboards 60 FourStroke 996cc, 4 cylinder 3.17 QT. (106 oz.)

I was thinking the same thing on the new filter. Like changing the oil in a vehicle but a lot easier lol.
Thanks for the video.

Thank you! The 50/50 works so well. Sometimes I just go so often I don’t get time to clean.
Thanks for the tip, I didn’t know 50/50 V/W work on water spots. I will be cleaning my soon.
I use about 10% vinegar and 90% water, works great.
This is a great video! Thanks for making this. Very concise and clear. Great filming.
Thanks a lot. Just changed the oil in my 60 hp for first time. This made it a breeze. God bless!
No problem. Glad it was helpful. Anything you would add?

Super easy job. Glad I could help you save some $$$.
Great step by step instructional video! I just changed the oil on mine by following your video thank you. Subscribed
xeqshunner Thank you! 👊
OMG... I never knew that about turn the engine and tilt... Thank you!
You are welcome!
Great video and informative. The boss wants me to service his engine tomorrow. Feel more confident now. Cheers
Awesome! You will do great! Be sure to give me a shout here if you get stuck.
thanks man! time to swap the oil on my tracker as well, appreciate the posted instructions.
No problem. I will do more instructional videos as time goes on.
nice videos, do you have a video to change the water pump (complete change) for the Mercury 60hp 4 stroke? thanks!!!!!!!

Just subscribed, good video. We have a new Rangers RT178 with the 60hp Mercury 4 stroke, Take Care and Safe Fishing🎣🇺🇸
Thank you. Tight lines!
Great video thanks! Im going to give mine a try
Good luck!
Always use clean oil on the new filter gasket.
PJ in the valley Thank you. Good thing to do!
Very helpful🤙
Hey my cowling doesn’t latch. Do any of your videos show any maintenance or repairs for the engine cowling?
I don't have any like that sorry. I don't even have this boat any more.
Thanks. Nice video. Very helpful.
You are welcome.
Do you have a video on fuel filter replacement for that motor? I have the same one. Thanks !!
I don’t but I can gladly make one sometime this winter.
Thank you so much for this video. The manual I received when I purchased my boat did not have torque specifications for the plug or the filter. Just wondering if that is important to use a torque wrench or not. Thanks again!
I don't torque them. I try to give a solid snug on the plug. On a filter, once it touches I do an additional 3/4 to 1 1/4 of a turn.
Btw thanks for your videos. Very helpful. I had someone do my oil change. Wish I would have seen this. Ps I have same set up as you. 2009.
Glad it will help. haha Next time you can do it!
Nice. Awesome video. I have the same boat as you and I found a pool of oil under my propeller. What could cause this? HELP?
Is it gear lube?
@@clearwaterfishing No. it’s pretty clear almost motor oil like.
@@Kenjoy77 That does not sound good. It seems like it is the bottom seal on the motor is dripping down.
@@clearwaterfishing I think it's coming from the lower units.
I like to write the date on the oil filter. So when I check my oil level later down the road it doubles as a "service light" if you will.
That is a great idea!
Great roundup on the process man!
Thank you sir! One of my first videos. I have gotten much better since then.

I use 93 E10 as well. These newer engines are designed for it.
Good Video! Thanks for posting!
1ProudPaddy Thank you! I’ll keep posting if you keep watching.
Thanks!
No problem!
Thanks for the video! future ones can you makle the audio louder? Was hard to hear for me sometimes thanks!

It sounds like you got water somewhere you shouldn’t have. Might let it dry out and check your fuses.
Thanks for the information

Check your fuel system. Reeds diaphragms and fuel pump. Mine started doing that as well and the fuel system needed to be replaced.

What size socket thanks
So using one of those oil sucker might not be the best idea of the oil is that deep in the motor?
jungarn Yeah the sump is pretty low. I would recommend just using the oil drain plug.
@@clearwaterfishing how much oil can be down there? I got a 50hp.
