  • I have expanded the working area of my cnc machine from a 4030 to a 1000mm x1000mm. I installed new 1000mm X and Y axis C beam extrusion along with new T8 Acme lead screws. I paid for this upgrade myself and purchased all of the parts for for the cnc from Opendbuilds.com. My affiliate links to all the parts are listed below.

    How is the machine rigidity/precision wise? I'm thinking extending mine to 1515.

  • @AERuffy

    Since you went to the trouble of fabricating all these parts, why didn't you flip the c beams around so that the leadscrew is accessible from the outside. It should only require drilling a few holes.

    So I still have a stock machine and just added extra support under the spoil board to keep it from sagging. Did you add anything to your new machine. At 1000mm I bet it would have a good dish given how much my stock to had. Thanks for sharing, this info was great.

      I did add three supports for the spoilboard. Especially since the 3/4 mdf is so heavy, didn't want it to sag.

    Looks great! My son asked if it would be possible to flip the C-channel so that the screws were facing outward to keep dust off of them during cutting. I can't wait to see your next projects!

    • @windsorwoodcraft
      @windsorwoodcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible to flip the c beams, with a little extra modification. But the holes in the new black gantry plates that I used don't line up with the holes in the blue X axis supports. And the new lead screw nut blocks do not line up with the old gantry plates. The only other way to do it without drilling a bunch of new holes would be to also flip the wheel assemblies so the the new black plates are on the outside, with the old plates on the inside, so they line up with the blue supports, but that would shorten the X axis working area. I may try to figure out a better way in the future, after I make sure there are no other issues with the expansion as it is now.

    Perhaps this will be helpful to you or others in the future. To calculate the proper steps per mm setting, take how far you wanted to move divided by how far it actually moved. Then multiply your current steps/mm by that number. If you wanted the machine to go 100mm but it only went 85, you figure 100 / 85 = 1.176. If the current steps/mm is 166 you multiply that by 1.176. The new steps/mm should be 166 * 1.176 = 195.2.

    Now that the factory has released the 6060 and 1010 expansion kits for this machine... If you had to do it over again, would you buy one of the factory kits or still build your own from scratch? I'm planning on getting one of the genmitsu proverxl 4030, and probably expand one day

    • @windsorwoodcraft
      @windsorwoodcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time that I expanded my 4030, the extension kits were still in development so that is why I figured out how to expand it myself. If I were to purchase a 4030 again now, I probably would buy the factory extension kit mainly because it would be much easier to do with the specific factory made parts for the machine. That was the main reason that I bought the 4030, but I just didn't want to keep waiting for the extension kits to be released.

    Hi, have you looked into silent stepper motor controllers for this machine? I am trying to figure out which would be a replacement for it as the steppers are extremely loud from factory

    • @windsorwoodcraft
      @windsorwoodcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't looked into it myself. The only time that I have noticed real loud noises is during a 3D carve when the motors are doing quick, short movements and changing directions repeatedly, like on a finely detailed project. I have read some posts on the Sainsmart Facebook group of other people changing the control box to try to reduce the noise but haven't heard of anyone putting different motors on it.

      @@windsorwoodcraft thanks for quick reply. No need to swap the motors. Just the motor controllers. The stock ones are noisy. I just joined the fb community and found a post about it but seems the controllers are fixed to the board and not a simple swap. I remember early in 3d printers theybjad the same issue and people added a small controller between the motor and the board to make them quiet. Wonder if this would work here too. The noise on the unit i received is louder than the stock spindle at full speed. An ear piercing whine.

    thinking about doing a 1500 wide and 1000 height with mine mounted on a 4x8 table. trying to save some money and thinking about just mounting the side rails to the table and lowering the z and putting spoil board on the table and eliminating the cross bars. what are your thoughts? also did you have to downsize to a 8mm screw. seems like your links are going to have some lead time on shipping and thinking about amazon. found some 10mm as trying to save some money by using the existing hardware. was wondering if you could tell me if the y's and the z are double threaded. dont want to have to take my machine apart to find out.

    • @windsorwoodcraft
      @windsorwoodcraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure about the double thread. But the lead screws are standard Acme threads. I used the 8mm screws because I couldn't find 10mm screws with the exact same specs as the stock screws that would allow using all the other existing stock parts. Just easier to switch to the 8mm screws and matching parts. I did think about trying to eliminate the front and rear rails but would still need some sort of bracket on the ends of the Y rails to raise the wheel assembly up off the table.

      Even if not kidding, then don't waste money on patents. Patents are for new inventions, such as new technologies or new ways of doing things. A kit like this, isn't worthy of a patent and its also hideously expensive. Go for a trademark then. They're way cheaper, way more encompassing and way easier to obtain.
      Edit: Vertical expansion seems to be fairly easily doable. Get a sheet of aluminum, which thickness matches that of the blue vertical brackets. Then take the location of the existing holes, place them on a CAD design of the new plates and elongate the original design. Now just ask the CNC to carve out those designs, swap them out, as well as the blue, vertical C beam and its connector and you got extra Z height.
