    The most amazing thing about all this in my opinion is that Milton didn't "write" Paradise Lost; one of the greatest pieces of literature in the English canon: he was blind, so dictated the entire story to his daughters who wrote it down for him. • @SineN0mine3
      @SineN0mine3 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have to wonder if that particular interpretation was actually invented by satanists. I doubt any genuine scholar would seriously believe that in his time that the author would take such a massive risk. Unless your audience is already comfortable with the idea of Satan being a role model I don't think most people would reach that conclusion without some help.
      It's already difficult for audiences to understand the nuances of satire; basing your argument on the premise of people's entire world view and cosmic belief would not have made for a very popular story, nor an effective satire.
      Satan is the archetypal villain, by including him in your satire you're basically telling your audience "don't be fooled by this character's charm, they're the literal embodiment of evil as you know it".
      There's probably many different ways to interpret a text like this especially when so much of the context is lost or obscured by the sands of time.
      I even think it's valid to interpret the text with Satan as the anti-hero so long as you admit that wasn't the point that the author was making.
      I would expect that most people who say that they think that's the point haven't read the story or even had it explained to them properly, they're just repeating an interesting or controversial seeming opinions because they expect it will get a reaction.

    • @themightymcb7310
      @themightymcb7310 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      @@kenzboardA supposedly benevolent and wise dictator is still a dictator. God is claiming to be omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omnipowerful. However, these three things contradict each other at a fundamental level.
      Omnipotence means he has all knowledge of what has happened, is happening, and will happen. He knows who will make what choices and how it will all end up. This essentially forces you to accept predeterminism, the idea that free will does not truly exist and God had it all planned from the jump. This works well with the idea of God being all powerful, as it gives him control over basically everything down to the finest detail, but it directly contradicts the idea that God is purely benevolent because he essentially made us the way we are. He designed Satan in such a way that he would never be satisfied with the current order of things, dooming him to fail from the very moment of creation. He created hell and then created sinners to populate it. He orchestrated every act of evil. He knows it will happen because he chose for it to happen. This is not benevolent behavior.
      So say you aren't a Calvinist then, you believe in free will. That necessarily means that God is either not omnipotent or not omnipowerful-he either cannot see the future or is powerless to control it. This leaves him available to be 100% pure and good, since he has no ability to control evil, but it either strips him of his power or foresight.
      Christians have been attempting to square this particular circle for literal centuries.

    • @MrBarfingRainbows
      @MrBarfingRainbows 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Well, if you actually look at Milton's God, holistically, he does look a bit strange for a supposed, "all loving, benevolent" God.
      In the poem, God actually, very briefly, gives his reason for everything he's doing. He specifically says, this creation, the fall of Man and their eventual redemption, is "so shall my glory excel." This video is kinda fine, Wendigoon actually misses/misinterprets some details of the poem (ex. the poem, while it does praise Eve, actually repeatedly says God made woman lesser than Man, and it is suggested that she is even less intelligent); and there is a reason why some academics view God as being tyrannical, and it's not just because "everyone is stupid" (lol?), it's partly because Milton's God actually demonstrates some extremely questionable traits. He openly mocks and laughs at the rebel angels in derision when they first plan their revolt (all kind and all good?), and when Adam asks Raphael on the nature of the universe, he doesn't actually explain everything, and says that not everything should or could be known to man---God "laughs" at man trying to understand his creation.
      Satan also doesn't actually transform into a serpent in this poem, but possesses the body of one against its will. In Heaven, God says he won't punish the serpent for tempting Eve, since it was Satan's Sin---Satan took control of the snake, but when God (as the Son) arrives in Eden, he punishes all serpents anyway, for an action that was made against their own will. God also basically punishes all of his earthly creations (the entire animal kingdoms) for Adam and Eve's Sin too (again, for something that wasn't the animal's fault)--all of Paradise falls to disarray, Death comes, and animals are forced to kill each other for survival.
      If you're not actually religious and don't have a (unintentionally biased) connection to Christian belief--Satan still certainly isn't a good character (but not completely evil, as Wendigoon does cover), since he's motivated by jealousy and hatred, but he gains praise from some scholars for his unrelenting conviction against an irreconcilable, unconquerable force of oppression. Wendigoon missed this part of the poem, or at least failed to mention (or at least I didn't hear him mention it): Mankind in the poem, was created to replace the rebel angels who fell, and they would eventually ascend to join God in Heaven. This would occur however, if they only obeyed--their true purpose, was to obey God. God's reasons in the poem, are basically: obey me, for my glory.
      Which is also part of the tragedy of the poem (and why some people view this God as being a tyrant), even if we accept that God is completely good (by accepting his word, and the word of his angels who are subservient to him), he doesn't give enough reason or evidence to the angels or man to fully believe that. Satan even says, if he knew how powerful God was (and also, implying if he knew the circumstances of his birth), he would never have betrayed God, since he wouldn't have reason to doubt him. Milton's God purposely keeps knowledge from man and the angels, and wants them to blindly obey him, for his glory. Any unbiased reader could rightly see this God as being questionable.
      Milton's God basically invented a scenario that will cause suffering and death, and of course, since he is omniscient, he knew this anyway. It basically boils down to: obey me, or suffer (but God knew this anyway, so he purposely created a universe where people/angels wouldn't obey him, and he could cause them suffering).
      (Edited for spelling.)

      @@MrBarfingRainbows I do not want to write a full essay in response, but there are numerous examples of "tyranny" like God mocking the rebellious angels and such that are not necessarily contradictory to his all-loving nature. The thing about the fall of man so his "glory shall excel" is a kind of Calvinist theological concept, so I wouldn't say tyrannical. There is a universal law, known as the law of freedom, if that law is broken love is destroyed and rebellion arises.
      And another universal law is the law of love, if this is broken undeniably death is likely to follow, since love is the action of giving and receiving, such as the way of life as we know nowadays.

This story definitely touched me and especially seeing and going through the emotion's with you has brought me a moment I did not expect to encounter along with how much it played into my day. To me, the most haunting thing from Paradise Lost that still disturbs me to this day is the imagery of Sin. Something I was hoping you’d bring up in your analysis of her character is that she is constantly giving birth to these canine monsters who, themselves, copulate with her to produce more and more of themselves in an eternally incestuous cycle. When I first read this, I felt it was meant to represent that the mind often falls in love with its own creations, “ideas”, and unless these ideas are presented to the wider world for scrutiny and discourse, then the idea will fall in love with itself and often spawn even more ideas solely off from its own imagined merits, but with each subsequent new idea becoming even more flawed and degenerated than the last. It’s a disturbing allegory of how bad ideas that are never brought to the light of day will fester and multiply unto themselves until nothing else can be done about it. What starts as a thought of pure beauty can, over time, degenerate into an overflowing cesspool of madness if you aren’t careful.

    Dude, you seriously nailed it! I’ve never heard such an articulate, saavy, insightful analysis of anything in the Christian realm! The question has always been, “With as much knowledge as Satan has, how could he be dumb enough to launch this war against God?” Your conclusion, that he just can’t restrain or conceal his true feelings of envy and narcissism is the best explanation I’ve seen so far. Satan can’t repent because, he doesn’t just feel envy, HE IS ENVY! Applause!👏👏👏✝️🇺🇸

      You know, it's easy to write religion down as silly fairy tales, but most of religious texts (be it the Bible or the Vedas or Egyptian mythology or anything for that matter), are the wisdom of mankind crystalized into a canon. Up to the point of being written, they are what humanity knew was so important, it had to be written and kept dearly close to their lives.

    First of all, what stood out to me the most was how Adam talked/viewed Eve, it’s so sweet and the way he talks about her is beautiful. I also found it interesting the emotions satan felt when seeing Eden. Because I feel like he really wanted to be apart of that but his drive and hatred of god is what he ultimately stayed with. Not to defend him or anything, but it’s an interesting take on him. This story is so beautiful at the end when even though they know what humanity is to become and what they are going to do, we are ultimately connected through our faith to god and hope.
    I love this story, can’t wait to listen to Dante’s inferno next !

      It's also the fact that Adam started constantly blaming her since then broke me even more. I think it were those moments that made Eve realize just how big of a mistake she made, since Adam's right - He bared her sin with her just because of her own selfish idea to have Adam all by herself instead of letting him have another Eve (and I'm not saying this as a bad thing, after all Adam was being selfish too by disregarding the consequences just to be with Eve) and now he has to suffer for her sake too. The fact that people can read this as making Satan the good guy really speaks to Milton's writing of the character. Here he isn't a caricature of evil and depravity, but a prideful, charismatic leader who could make a valid enough argument to convince legions to follow him in his personal and private pursuit of power and glory. When people read this and say "he kinda has a point" that is EXACTLY the point! Because people don't simply bow down before someone to make them king because they say so, they make someone king who promises all riches and reward in return, who preys on their own pride and beliefs and says "I can give you what you are being deprived of". But I don't think he necessarily lied, he said to those angels "let us go to war against God and I will treat you all better than he ever did". Something to that effect. It may have been untrue, but a lie must be not believed by the person speaking, and I think Satan truly believed he stood a chance, blinded by his ego and wrath. No doubt though he would have said anything he thought would turn the most angels to his cause, so he very well may have lied, but to his audience, the angels of whom he wanted loyalty, he had to make a very convincing argument so that they would see his as a just cause and rebel against their Lord God. When I say his argument must have been valid, I don't mean it was righteous by any means, but effective at convincing those angels to side with him. I love how much respect Eve is given in the story. I heard very ignorant people validate the pain women go through in child birth bc of Eve and that it automatically spits women in this place of shame and disrespect. So much of the story acknowledges the beauty of growing a person inside and constantly points out that Eve was the first “Holy Mother of Man” meaning she deserves respect. It’s just so refreshing to hear Adam speak about his love for his partner and the importance of her in the world. I teared up at some points too.

      Yeah, it shocks me to hear how people read Eve’s deception and sin to be a “woman stupid-bad, man wise-good” argument when Milton clearly portrays Eve as something so good and so beautiful. Somehow, people see misogyny in places like Eden. It makes little sense to see it this way.

      Adam and eves love in this story is so fucking cool… they went from perfection to disgrace and despite it all, despite pain hatred envy rage fear uncertainty and guilt … chose to love each other … I like to think that ends up being the thing that saves them… their love for each other… and when they finally get into the perfect paradise… nothing about their love changes… because it’s already perfect even if they argue.. even if they tell and disagree… even if they hurt each other.. apologies come afterwards.. because that’s what their love has always been… even in sin their love is perfect

    I always struggled with faith and belief, I’ve considered myself atheist, agnostic, and doubtful of god. Upon hearing tales of the lord I’d scoff and consider them all metaphorical. But there’s something about this story and the way you narrate it just fills me with belief. I am still skeptical as is the definition of faith, but this has strengthened my belief in a way I could not have imagined. Thankyou Wendi, never did I think I’d ever believe in the way that I do but this tale and your way of reciting the tale just makes me believe and truly have faith.

    It felt like Adam's lamentations to the tragedy of discovering Eve had partaken of the Forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, the consequences of that action that ultimately made him rescind himself to Death, is like a wedding vow of pure unyielding love to his other half. Whole in life. Whole in death. It's like the concept of marriage had emerged for the first time. And it's tragically beautiful.

      I can only agree. I was raised Catholic, but distanced myself far from it once I was able to think independently about such things.
      Ten years ago I had the thought that maybe it would have been different if I was raised Protestant, since almost all of my criticisms have to do with the Catholic Church. Your videos got me thinking that maybe it would have been different if it had been other, more open-minded people teaching me.
      But what has happened, has happened. I am an agnostic now and like to listen to all faiths and mythologies - as long as they don't try to convert me.
