    The most amazing thing about all this in my opinion is that Milton didn't "write" Paradise Lost; one of the greatest pieces of literature in the English canon: he was blind, so dictated the entire story to his daughters who wrote it down for him. This man had to imagine this entire thing and couldn't keep any notes or references, since he couldn't read what he'd written!

    To me, the most haunting thing from Paradise Lost that still disturbs me to this day is the imagery of Sin. Something I was hoping you’d bring up in your analysis of her character is that she is constantly giving birth to these canine monsters who, themselves, copulate with her to produce more and more of themselves in an eternally incestuous cycle. When I first read this, I felt it was meant to represent that the mind often falls in love with its own creations, “ideas”, and unless these ideas are presented to the wider world for scrutiny and discourse, then the idea will fall in love with itself and often spawn even more ideas solely off from its own imagined merits, but with each subsequent new idea becoming even more flawed and degenerated than the last. It’s a disturbing allegory of how bad ideas that are never brought to the light of day will fester and multiply unto themselves until nothing else can be done about it. What starts as a thought of pure beauty can, over time, degenerate into an overflowing cesspool of madness if you aren’t careful.

    • @blutygar
      @blutygar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +507

      That's a horrifying revelation, and even if its in a biblical sense here, I can definitely see this being very familiar to the modern world from... certain political stances to something that hits closer to home for me, being an artist and writer and not taking some time to get feedback for the ideas that I make for my own works.

      The fact that he was able to come up with something that represents the idea of sin birthing more deplorable sin is, for lack of a better term, beautiful. There’s nothing I can imagine that could represent this concept better, and that’s a testament to his writing talent.

    What astounds me most about this twelve-volume poem is that Milton, having gone blind fifteen years before Paradise Lost was published, dictated the entire thing to his daughter, which she then wrote down.
    Milton evoking such beautiful imagery while blind reminds me of Beethoven composing the Ninth Symphony while completely deaf. Absolutely amazing

      At the beginning of book three, Milton once again calls to his muse, and even mentions his blindness; how he’ll never again see the beauty of the world, or the divinity of the human face. But he also says that’s okay, because it further allows for the light and inspiration of the Holy Spirit to shine from within him. I thought that was really beautiful when I read it.

    - Satan’s argument to taking over Heaven basically being “You think God is our Mom?? Do you Remember being born? I don’t remember being born” and it WORKED??
    - Mary being the Second Eve that defeats the Serpent on Eve’s behalf
    - “Tell me about His great battle” and him getting choked up explaining that the “Battle” was literally just Love
    - Satan in paradise carrying Hell with him bc of his Despair and humanity leaving paradise with Hope

      And wholeheartedly true, in a beautiful way.
      There is a universal law, known as the law of freedom, if that law is broken love is destroyed and rebellion arises.
      And another universal law is the law of love, if this is broken undeniably death is likely to follow, since love is the action of giving and receiving, such as the way of life as we know nowadays.

No preaching, no judgment, just your passion for the story and how it affects you personally, as you approach it from all these philosophical perspectives, and it's just so genuine that I can't help but be on board. I left organized religion years ago (I was raised catholic) and at this point I'm just kind of a spiritual whateverist based on whatever feels meaningful to me, but revisiting the biblical stories with you is almost kind of nostalgic. Reminds me of my grandma, who's really into angels (yet not so much into christianity as a whole, it's mostly... angels laced with new age spiritualism). Angels and demons and the genesis/exodus story have always been my favorite parts of the christian religion when I was a kid, so it's nice to revisit it from a different perspective.

    The fact that people can read this as making Satan the good guy really speaks to Milton's writing of the character. Here he isn't a caricature of evil and depravity, but a prideful, charismatic leader who could make a valid enough argument to convince legions to follow him in his personal and private pursuit of power and glory. When people read this and say "he kinda has a point" that is EXACTLY the point! Because people don't simply bow down before someone to make them king because they say so, they make someone king who promises all riches and reward in return, who preys on their own pride and beliefs and says "I can give you what you are being deprived of". It may have been untrue, but a lie must be not believed by the person speaking, and I think Satan truly believed he stood a chance, blinded by his ego and wrath. No doubt though he would have said anything he thought would turn the most angels to his cause, so he very well may have lied, but to his audience, the angels of whom he wanted loyalty, he had to make a very convincing argument so that they would see his as a just cause and rebel against their Lord God. When I say his argument must have been valid, I don't mean it was righteous by any means, but effective at convincing those angels to side with him. We all think we're growing closer to Him when we remember to occasionally thank Him for some piece of good fortune, but the fact is we aren't. We're so separated and isolated from God and the world jsut keeps doing everything in its power to keep Him away from us. I felt so drained and devoid of happiness recently and it wasn't until I went back to church that I realized it was because I had grown so far apart from God without even realizing it. We *need* church in our lives. We need a community of believers to hold us accountable and keep us firm when the world wants to push us away from God.

I think it were those moments that made Eve realize just how big of a mistake she made, since Adam's right - He bared her sin with her just because of her own selfish idea to have Adam all by herself instead of letting him have another Eve (and I'm not saying this as a bad thing, after all Adam was being selfish too by disregarding the consequences just to be with Eve) and now he has to suffer for her sake too. That amount of guilt is probably what made Eve break down first.

    You're completely right about people misunderstanding this book as just E-boy Satan, and I'm extremely happy you covered it. I bought it a few years ago and just couldn't get into it sadly, so I watched some other TH-camr cover it and they painted the plot so terribly compared to you. It was such a basic run down and pretty much laid out what you said most people interpret the book. They just focus on the whole sympathy for the Devil aspect which isn't there and don't even mention the real meat of the discussions between Adam, Eve, and the Archangel Raphael, the fall of man with Adam's pure undying devotion to Eve, and the intrigue Adam had. I found it so interesting that in the book Raphael said it's okay to ask questions and be inquisitive. I went to a Catholic school from grades 1-11 and it always seemed like if you asked questions, you were questioning God's plan and activity going against him, and it's like no, just curious.
    Great video like all your others, but I think this one is just a bit better. Maybe it's that personal touch you have with Christianity.

I have question everything tattooed on me and I am no longer Christian or religious for that matter and one of the many reasons for me losing faith was that sort of thing. I can't help but think of the Mark Twain quote, which I'll paraphrase as "But who prays for the Devil? Who in hundreds or thousands of years has had the common humanity and compassion to pray for the one sinner who needed it most?" when hearing how Lucifer considered asking for forgiveness before dismissing the idea. Twain's quote has always struck me as rather profound, but Milton's suggestion that Lucifer doesn't WANT forgiveness, and it's confliction with Twain sort of reminded me that that's just the nature of Satan: he is irredeemable, not because his sins were too great, but because he doesn't WANT to be redeemed. And somehow that's even more profound, thinking that if only seeing Eden and considering asking forgiveness had gone another way, it's a whole other way that humanity would never have been cast from paradise. I grew up Christian but in honesty since growing up and learning more about all sorts of religions I'm not sure what I choose to believe in, but it's still an interesting story and very thought provoking to see how many things had to go wrong for the fall of humanity to happen, and yet it happened all the same, as if it was fate.

      @figarden1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      It is what differentiates us from the angels. We both are capable of free will, however, they exist in black and white and we exist in a grey area. They KNOW the difference between right and wrong no matter how slight or subtle. Man can be LEAD into or become victims of temptation, however, for an angel to sin, it is an intentional act and directly is in opposition to the Lord. It honestly adds an even greater layer because he may actually want redemption, but understands it can never be possible and thus, relents and continues.

    • @lykonic1763
      @lykonic1763 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@figarden1 I wonder though, IS redemption and forgiveness for a fallen angel - or anyone else who chose to commit a sin - truly impossible? Who is to say that if Lucifer *did* go to God and ask for forgiveness for what he's done, that in his infinite compassion God wouldn't grant him that forgiveness? If, despite the fact that he exists purely in black and white morality, Lucifer did this, I personally find it hard to believe that God wouldn't forgive him - he's supposed to be the epitome of all things good, with wisdom and understanding beyond mortal comprehension. For humans, we need only admit our sins, try to move on from them and improve, and let him into our lives to earn forgiveness. So despite the fact we've never seen a fallen angel actually ask for forgiveness, I would have to believe that God would grant it, if they were genuine in their regret and willingness to return to the light. But then again, I'm not exactly an expert on religion of any kind, and don't know what I personally choose to believe still, so maybe my interpretations and hypotheticals just don't really align with Christianity as a whole. I just think as far as Paradise Lost goes, it's more of a hard-hitting message that Lucifer wants forgiveness, but out of pride or envy or wrath or what have you, refuses to ask for it. Which just reminds me of the Twain quote in my original comment, because who needs prayer more than a sinner who doesn't believe they can be, or are even worthy of being, redeemed?
