I was at The Bottom Line that night. I was sitting at a table with a friend, rolling joints, and there were 2 guys sitting at the table in front of us. We realized one of the guys was John Lennon. We went over to their table and chatted with John a bit. I couldn't believe how gracious and humble he was talking to us. I've never forgotten that night.
I’m totally blown away by this amazing story! Being a huge Beatles and Grateful Dead fan, I often wondered if Jerry ever met any of them. It’s so great to know that he and John Lennon met each other and got along so well! Thank you Big Steve for sharing!
Me too. Iam from Liverpool right by Penny Lane and was born in the same hospital as Julian in 1972. IMy mum use to see them in the Cavern in the early 60's so I grew up on them and my name is Paul. In 1991 I went on Camp America in upstate NY and that's when I got into the Dead and have a Steal Your Face tattoo on my right arm . Beaautiful story this video.
Love the fact that the guy who just naturally became the voice and story teller carrying on the GD legacy just also happens to be a person of real integrity, kindness and humility. To me, the fact that Steve had a foot in both the band’s inner circle, but also getting to be in the thick of it all at every show with all the fans and the madness all while working w the road crew, plus seeing all the love he clearly had for Jerry especially, I hold Steve in the same regard as Jerry or Phil or anyone else in the band. We love you man!
I could listen to stories like this all day! Your ability to remember so many details after all these years is remarkable. We are very lucky to have you. Thank you Steve!!!!!
@@ganglestank Not everyone can love one another and vice versa and whichever way and back. A lesson all too familiar over my 43 years...as far as stealing or ripping off a writing credit from Frank Zappa, as told by Frank Zappa, may not be the whole or only truth to it. As it was billed as a John Lennon performance and the song being an outright jamrag that could have had any number of actual writers of accreditation, I am sure Frank Zappa and his hired guns have been more than compensated and made even on the association with John Lennon alone. Being such a prolific writer who published more than 600 songs in his time, boo f'ing who for Mr. Zappa.
priceless Steve !!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for being a band member and a central person in what made our lives so much more colorful. Priceless stories....

John was a huge deadhead from 1968 onward. I guess Rock Scully had come around to England on business that year and brought some Owsley barrels with him, and John got a few, and a copy of Anthem. Anthem of the Sun was the one that really made him a deadhead, he was so impressed with that album. He also loved how Jerry approached the electric guitar like a banjo at times, and was a big fan of Weir's approach to rhythm guitar, and just how far out they could take a jam. He really dug what they were innovating as far as the wall of sound and everything else they innovated while he was alive to see. Theres some recorded interview where I heard all this years ago, but I don't remember where it was from.
I was in the same 'room' as John and he sang for me and others. 22Aug1965Portland OR USA It was my 9th B-Day and I saw The Beatles live ! It was the best place to be on the Planet.
I’m never envious when I read comments like this…my heart and soul are filled with joy-at the absolute pure and utter joy they themselves felt-in their experiences with the Beatles. Happy Belated Birthday RogerPeet, 22Aug1965Portland OR USA, truly the best place to be on the Planet to see John, Paul, George and Ringo-The Beatles Live!-Take that you other celestial Planetary bodies floating around our galaxies and universes since the friggin’ beginnin’ of time-Big Bang! Concert Details: The Beatles played two shows at the Memorial Coliseum, one at 3:30 pm and another at 8:00 pm. The concerts were part of a package tour that included support acts Brenda Holloway and the King Curtis Band, Cannibal and the Headhunters, and Sounds Incorporated. Setlist: The Beatles’ setlist for the concerts included songs such as “Ticket to Ride,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” and “I Feel Fine.” Attendance: The concerts were attended by thousands of screaming fans, who were eager to see the Beatles perform live. Notable Moments: The Beatles’ visit to Portland was notable for the fact that it was the first time they had performed in the city. The concerts were also notable for the fact that they were part of a larger tour that included historic stops at Shea Stadium in New York and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Phenomenal story, brother Steve, and so amazing that you played with and got to know the great Jerry’cherry’Garcia and you got to know John Lennon a little bit -two of my musical icons for 60 years now!! ‘

Thank you for another great Jerry story from the treasure chest of wonderful memories in the blessed and incredible life you've had.I recently read your book about your personal journey with The Grateful Dead and Jerry.I recall this story from your book and to hear you tell it in person has been amazing.Again Steve.....thank you for being you and sharing your memories....I'll always be GRATEFUL for your kindness, very much love to you Steve....have a great day!!!!!🙂🎸🎶☮️⚡💀
Hey Now Big Steve, that was one helluva day and night. The fact that the NYPD didn't look in the trunk was a true blessing for all involved. Some things are just meant to be, and some aren't. No wonder you remember all those details, that day left a mark.
thanks Big Steve , what a close call ....it must have been incredible to be with John and Jerry listening to their stories and laughing along .....so cool , peace
Lol, I grew up w Terry, Weasel n their family in Bay Ridge. Our house was famous for Acid parties n I was the one in charge of Music. The Bands played: everything Dead, Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna, Janis Joplin, NRPS. I had concert posters of the Dead, JA etc all around the room n when We were tripping, it was like being a concert, those posters came ALIVE . Bay Ridge was the most amazing place to grow up. Half of the audience at the Academy Dead/Jerry, shows were Bay Ridgeites. Those were THE best days; they had that 'Strangers stopping Strangers' vibe. It was like WE were all at the same Party.
Thank you Mr. Parish for your incredible storytelling. I’m 65 and grew up literally across the street from 710 Ashbury. Your stories are priceless and thank you for sharing.

Hey Steve! I love this story brother! I lived in Bay Ridge back then and I knew Terry and Weasel. Good people! Great times, but like you say, scary at others. Love your channel!
Hey Steve, recently bought your audiobook, home before daylight, excellent book. The highs and lows, tragedies and successes, definitely a long strange trip
Thanks for the memories I never had previously Steve…even though I’ve been a Dead Heat since 1970…I didn’t think I had room for more memories…whoa…revelation man…
WOW. So so lucky. Damn Steve, you got me stressed out. I'm gonna have to roll one and take a breather. That's one for the history books. Thanks for the story ✌😊
I remember Ronny Sunshine, he gave a girl I knew a Stratocaster neck that he said belonged to John Lennon. He would come see my band play at Wetlands in the early 90s and was always very impressed…with himself.
Big Steve!!!! Great to see ya. I used to know your young first cousin she was a friend. But I was lucky to remember you at shows. I don't remember her name by now. Short with blond and good humor. She said you are super fun . And enthusiastic. David grad keyed me on on the melon head thing. Davis was a huge tall upper west side man who worked with you folks I think . Well Thanx Steve for all your help raising our energy by your work.❤❤❤

Steve - Purdy Shuffle!!❤. Is there a recording of that?? we were at Keystone on August 11 with Merle. It was a Sunday night in 1974. We sat on stage with Jerry and Billy - were you there? It’s unfortunate that John didn’t love Zappa so much and ripped his song writing credits for King Kong

@@ganglestankyea…because “King Kong” was such a huge hit for both Lennon and Zappa! Tragedy.
