He got the raw end of not having his Father in his life BUT the other band members didn't forget about him especially Paul McCartney who wrote " Hey Jude " which is my favourite Beatles song ... Both Sean & Julian look like they Father but Julian is John's double....
Julian's music is totally underrated. He's a lovely singer. I never liked his dad, who was an AH, but it's like Julian got his talent with empathy and fragility. Like his music a lot.
As the son of a really great blues guitarist, I always found alot of commonality in Julian; of course on a smaller scale. I know that my dad always wanted me to learn the guitar, and it took me a long time to get around to figuring it out. I still don't regard myself as that good, but that's probably because he is my comparison. It's tough, growing up in a father's shadow in some way. I've found that I have a whole lot of other cool things that I uniquely bring to the table, and I still pursue guitar as a hobby. That all said, and I've really started to begin this project in earnest this year: I'd love to make an album of my own. Music that I would like to listen to, both just for my own sake and perhaps because at the end of the day, I do still want to make my dad proud and carry on the torch of music.
I met his other son Sean It was in the late 90s he was playing at a small place in Providence Rhode Island Really nice down-to-earth guy but his brother is the one that inherited all the talent
Julian can sing, play, perform and compose. He did it away from his Dad, on his own. I thought his recent rendering of Imagine was risky and a big success.
He always comes across as a good, down-to-earth, kind man, which is a great achievement, because he had to deal with a lot of stuff. He’s a far better man than his Dad in many respects.
Never thought Adelaide would get mentioned on JRE, especially not Julian speaking fondly about his time here We are the forgotten capital, so it’s nice to see that
people said for years that the only reason hank williams jr was famous was because his dad was famous. in the beginning it was tough for him too but his music speaks for itself.
Julian being handed that white feather is very bizarre... An unimaginable experience to be told something by a loved one and have it presented to you after their passing. An intangible presence becoming tangible like that is a shock, and in such a poetic way too. coincidence or not, the message came through loud and clear.
John Lennon was one of the most transformative figures in one of the most transformative eras of modern history-the 1960s. This was a decade where culture underwent a seismic shift, moving from a rigid, conservative framework to a more liberal, progressive ethos. Lennon didn’t just live through this transformation; he was at the very heart of it, helping to shape and accelerate the changes that defined the era. His evolution as an artist and individual mirrored the broader cultural revolution. From the polished “moptop” of the early Beatles, whose music fit neatly into the conservative norms of the early ’60s, to the outspoken, rebellious artist of the late ’60s and beyond, Lennon became a symbol of change. He embodied the move away from conformity toward self-expression, questioning authority, and embracing a more open, experimental way of thinking and living. You can agree or disagree with his politics, which shifted and evolved over the years, but you cannot deny his greatness. Lennon was more than a musician, he was a cultural icon who used his platform to challenge societal norms, advocate for peace, and spark conversations that many were afraid to have. He wasn’t perfect, and he never pretended to be. It was his authenticity-his mix of intelligence, vulnerability, wit, and raw emotion, that made him so compelling. Naturally his children will look small in his shadow, but they´ve obviously had amazing opportunities as well. Sean just won an Oscar, and is nominated for a Grammy, managing his fathers legacy.
Agreed. But I hope you aren’t inferring that Julian simply hasn’t managed his fathers legacy as well as Sean has. The emotional abuse and rejection that John subjected Julian to should not be underestimated.
@@Mike12849I agree with you. There are two John Lennons. There is the monster and abuser. It is not surprising considering how he was abandoned by his parents. And there is the cultural icon created by producers and directors. It is not real. It is a mirage. Two very different people.
Carrer wise maybe, but I bet he never went without food in is stomach or a roof over his head. Many talented performers, some with more talent, never have had the opportuties he has had. So I am not going to feel to bad for him.
It was a tough gig.. he would have gone through struggles with his mum that i'm sure weren't great. Cynthia lennon seems like a lovely woman, not a showbiz type. While John lennon pursued fame- it seems to me anyway, as a form of escapism from an unhappy childhood. And that conflict in his mind- looking at the success of john lennon and the relative non success of his mum had to be a mindfuk. Thats just one example of course lol... I imagine he might have an element about himself, inherited dna that seeks fame- like john lennons dad too.. an escape to normality somewhat.
He must get the standard questions about: 1. Memories of John Lennon 2. How he is with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr 3. How he found out about his dad getting murdered 4. How he is with Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono 5. If he gets on well with the other Beatles Children But apart from those already juicy questions with great answers... He's lived longer than his dad, he has a mature understanding on how it feels to be famous and yet NOT famous at the same time, and he has stories of his music career that would make any interviewer blush with excitement to hear about! I'm so glad Rogan has given him a platform.
Actually of the almost 3 hours, this is the only conversation about his father for the most part. Nothing like when Julian was on Bill Maher and 99% of the questions were about his dad and the Beatles. Maher looked like a clown.
Beatles family reunion special would be awesome. Paul,Ringo,Julian,Dhani and maybe other siblings perform their various hits. Julian and Dhani could fill in their dads parts on the Beatles songs. Also they perform their respective solo works.
I think the reason why they turn him down is because an in-depth conversation with the first son of John Lennon may disabuse them of the idea that John Lennon was something more than just a human being. We all want to remember John Lennon for his music and his activism, but we have to not put blinders on and turn him into a untouchable idol. I think there are just too many people out there who don't want to be reminded of John Lennon's Humanity by looking into the eyes of his forgotten son.
John Lennon was abandoned by his father and lost his mother as a teenager. Then he ended up having to choose between being a Beatle and pursuing his destiny and being a decent husband and a father. Lennon was a bad husband to his first wife and a terrible father to Julian. He was not, however, a monster. He had to have felt a tremendous amount of guilt over how he treated his first family and also knew all of his fame and money came because of his willingness to sacrifice them. When you combine that guilt with the unresolved trauma of his childhood and the pressures and temptations that come with that kind of fame, it is a wonder Lennon didn't join the 27 club. The sad things it that really appears to have straightened himself out in the last few years of his life and was happy and content for the first time. He also was starting to make amends to Julian only to have some lunatic murder him because of his fame. Lennon's death was a tragedy in so many ways.
@ he left his first son out of a billion dollar estate. “You are not worth one sent to me” is the message he left from the grave and my lasting impression of this odious man.
@@johnkluge3421One thing people always leave out when they make it out like John had to choose between being a famous, rich musician or being a poor working dad. Was that the Beatles stopped touring in 1967. When Julian was about 4. Was he still making music? Yes. Did that take time? Yes. BUT he was LITERALLY at home those years. Have any of you actually read a Beatles biography? It tells you that Paul would often come by John’s house and him still be in bed at 3 O’clock in the afternoon. That excuse falls apart even more once he got with Yoko. Absolutely NO REASON why he couldn’t have flown Julian out to NYC.
Saw Julian live at the Warfield Theater San Francisco circa 1984. It was very special and I knew in that very moment how special it really was. You're a good son, Julian.
i ran into him on Rodeo Drive about a week ago and gave him the 'big fan' thing...he lit up at the recognition another time years ago i passed him in Santa Monica and i said 'Julian?' and he said 'sometimes' haha large hand and firm handshake as well as stout shouldered when i slapped him on the back leads me to believe that John was sturdy guy physically
When I first heard Valotte on the radio the hair on the back of my neck stood up, he sounded so much like John. I saw him in concert not long after. His performance was terrific and so athletic. Check out his version of It Won't Be Long- he gave it a whole different energy, made it his own. And he looks like his dad ca 1960. He did an interesting interview with Bill Maher. He hasn't had an easy life.
It's funny how those shows seem to think they know what the viewers want... Julian has so much talent and personality on his own regardless of his namesake. I've been listening to him since the start, and I know a lot of people who also have been fans. He's a lovely person who is constantly involved in good Samaritan, humanitarian efforts. Sadly, those are the ones who don't get the exposure they deserve. We know you're out there Julian ❤✌️ I know it might be little to say,but we support you 😊
You know what? I don't know Julian Lennon. All I know is what I've seen on TH-cam, his music, his website, and interviews. What I've learned is I that at about 21 years old, he set out on the daunting task of starting a music career independent of affiliation with his father. When his first label (?) signed him, they did so because of the quality of his music. The music executives listening to his demo tape didn't know who he was. The first album, Valotte, was very successful along with the tour. Not bad for the tender age of 21. In the midst of his music career, he decided to give photography a try. His first exhibition in September 2010 in New York was a huge success. In addition, he agreed to help an indigenous tribe with their survival. This led to his creation of the White Feather Charitable Foundation. Through his foundation, he can provide funding for this tribe and other groups in need, such as villages needing purification pumps to produce clean water. Also, he produces documentaries to educate the world on the plight of indigenous tribes and educate on a method of soil treatment and farming that can regenerate "dead" soil and re activate farm land in areas locked in famine. On top of this, he's written 3 children's books,"Touch the Earth," "Heal the Earth," and "Love the Earth." These books introduce the subject of the Earth's declining condition and our need to pay attention to the Earth's needs. With beautiful illustrations and simple language, these books help to open the conversation about conservation with the next generation. Also, proceeds from the sale of these books go to the White Feather Foundation. So, like I said, I don't know Julian Lennon, but I can tell you his resume sure looks a lot more impressive than mine.

GTA Online, love hearing his song during a high-speed chase.
Is there a comment section on TH-cam where someone DOESN’T mention GTA?
@mrchopsticks3No
@mrchopsticks3I think about the Roman Empire I'm not into that games💩
@mrchopsticks3 ❤
I’ve met him a few times. He’s very nice guy.
His first album Valotte, was really really good because he sounded so much like John.
Paul McCartney wrote Hey Jude as a guiding letter to Julian on dealing with his mother and father divorcing
What a gift!
yeh but it looks as if he doesn't keep in touch.
I met his other son Sean
It was in the late 90s he was playing at a small place in Providence Rhode Island
Really nice down-to-earth guy but his brother is the one that inherited all the talent
Yoko ono ruined him. Her dna even ruined the talent of her shared offspring with John 😂😂😂😂
Julian is very talented. Will always appreciate his work. Grand person too.
How could he not be ?
John Lennon offspring
Thank you, Joe!!!!! Julian is such a special person, so it's especially appreciated you had him on your shoe as a guest!!❤❤❤❤
Great guy. He's got a lot of good music. It's not easy being rejected as a child.
His help yourself album was such an underrated masterpiece. Shine on Jude.
I always wished Julian would have been more respected for his talent instead of being compared to his own Legand
Julian can sing, play, perform and compose. He did it away from his Dad, on his own. I thought his recent rendering of Imagine was risky and a big success.
Loved that story about the indigenous people. Julian is a cool dude.
He always comes across as a good, down-to-earth, kind man, which is a great achievement, because he had to deal with a lot of stuff. He’s a far better man than his Dad in many respects.
he inherited his mother's qualities
He is a far better man than his dad because he has Cynthia's genes.
He needs McCartney and Starr together on there. Imagine!
I’d s(cream).
Nope.
@@tapeadeadworm I'm afraid to ask what you mean by that.
that would be insane
That would be the biggest podcast in the history of podcasting
Never thought Adelaide would get mentioned on JRE, especially not Julian speaking fondly about his time here
We are the forgotten capital, so it’s nice to see that
“Jude” is a brilliant album by the way, great piece of work. Worthy of way more notice than it received.
I'm sure it is...😅
@Humble.Genius1how about listening to it instead of being a downer
people said for years that the only reason hank williams jr was famous was because his dad was famous. in the beginning it was tough for him too but his music speaks for itself.
Hank Williams III
Bocephus
@@musicians_with_guntsIII unfortunately does not come close to Jr or Sr
I saw Julian Lennon in concert one time in Philadelphia, PA. A juggler was his opening act.
Nice!!! My mind would have been blown at that haha!!!
He looks so much like his Dad.
44th anniversary of his death a week ago.
Julian being handed that white feather is very bizarre... An unimaginable experience to be told something by a loved one and have it presented to you after their passing. An intangible presence becoming tangible like that is a shock, and in such a poetic way too. coincidence or not, the message came through loud and clear.
You believe the bit about the white feather? I think it’s BS, even if he’s made himself remember it that way
@@vs71597and you have what reason to doubt it other than the usual 'never did anything of note themselves cynic'? Ppl like you need some friends.

Julian is a survivor, what a hand of cards to be dealt. If you think being John Lennons son is an easy gig, think again..
Yea I'm sure it's awful..
Carrer wise maybe, but I bet he never went without food in is stomach or a roof over his head. Many talented performers, some with more talent, never have had the opportuties he has had. So I am not going to feel to bad for him.
Everyone in the comments definitely has it way worse, unless Barron Trump or Prince William is in the chat.
Julian got the shit end of the stick. Sad.
I’ve always loved Julian’s music and photography. An amazing artist.
i still think it's disgraceful that he had to spend some of his inheritance buying back a postcard he wrote to his father. Yoko is awful
He must get the standard questions about:
1. Memories of John Lennon
2. How he is with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr
3. How he found out about his dad getting murdered
4. How he is with Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono
5. If he gets on well with the other Beatles Children
But apart from those already juicy questions with great answers...
Some of those questions could really hurt. I feel for the guy.
Beatles family reunion special would be awesome. Paul,Ringo,Julian,Dhani and maybe other siblings perform their various hits. Julian and Dhani could fill in their dads parts on the Beatles songs. Also they perform their respective solo works.
Shout out from Adelaide !! Loved Salt Water was a great song.
My favorite is too late for goodbyes, which single i bought back in the 80,s
It's wonderful to know that Julian and Sean are so close
Photograph Smile is my favorite from him and Valotte is just a compositional masterpiece.
After listening to a moving interview with Julian a few years back I cannot see John as anything but a POS
In 38 years this is the fist instance of disabuse that I've seen; jolly good sir, jolly good.
I'll never understand why Julian Lennon been treated that way. His very talented man in whatever he does.
I sure like his early albums and listen to them still. Never critically acclaimed, he still wrote some good songs.
Joe, thank you for giving us a chance to really get to know Julian. He’s obviously a kind and decent, not to mention, talented man.
Saw Julian live at the Warfield Theater San Francisco circa 1984. It was very special and I knew in that very moment how special it really was. You're a good son, Julian.
i ran into him on Rodeo Drive about a week ago and gave him the 'big fan' thing...he lit up at the recognition
another time years ago i passed him in Santa Monica and i said 'Julian?' and he said 'sometimes' haha
large hand and firm handshake as well as stout shouldered when i slapped him on the back
leads me to believe that John was sturdy guy physically
I remember the one hit song he made in the 80s that was being played on the radio called "stick around." I like that tune.
This guys gives good interviews , Julian is extremely well spoken and articulate , more well spoken than his dad was. I enjoy watching him speak
We know you're out there Julian ❤✌️
I know it might be little to say,but we support you 😊
Paul, George and Ringo should have Done something with Julian. It really blows my mind they didn't. Julian has an amazing voice
He has a lot to share, he should NOT be dismissed! 😠
That Saltwater track was huge in Australia. He's a true inspiration. Toughest gig in history and he's always done it with integrity.
Julian is a great artist in his own right. Those records he did in the ‘80’s were great; I need to check out his latest material.
Julian was pretty successful in the 80s as a musician.
Did not see that one coming with the White Feather - holy crap - that is crazy.
Why do you believe it?
Julian is Respected musician, artist and Gentleman in his own right! really respect the man !
I wonder if Julian can still notes on “too late for goodbyes” seems like complete opposite of his dad. Shy and soft spoken. I don’t blame him being overshadowed. He’s an amazing artist and photographer
I was just thinking about Julian and wondering how he was .
He did a really good episode on Bill Mahers podcast a few months ago.
me too, seeing this surprised me that way
His song “Too Late for Goodbyes” is a beautiful song
My son's name is Lennon Jude and his classmate/bestie is Sean Lennon. No one their age know the Beatles 😢
How old are they? My son is 7 and I’ve been having him listen to the Beatles his whole life among other great music from time past. Yellow Submarine is one of his favorite movies.
@TuckerUp My son is 8 his friend is 9. My son knows The Beatles but he's got no choice 😂 that's what's playing in the car (usually) or other classic rock. Teach em young 😎
You called your son Lennon Jude? Why would you do that to him 😂
I’ve been following Julian for years. He’s the guy Paul McCartney wrote “Hey! Jude” for. He never got into big trouble and he kinda left music because the critics were out for him comparing everything he did with his dad. I’m glad he looks healthy here he deserves the very best.
I saw Julian Lennon in Indianapolis. In the 1980s he was good
Good musician but a terrible person
@@shadowgl9 what makes him a terrible person? I don't know much if anything about him

She was called Cyn.

Saltwater is an incredible song
I understand what it's like when people try to move in on your family legacy who are not real family. It's sad but you become your own person become better in spite of them. Julian is a class act i hope nothing but the best for him
I love the sweet bond Julian and Sean have formed in recent years. They both seem like good men, particularly Sean’s anti woke stance
Sean has an anti woke stance. cool..
Sean's anti-woke? LOL. He looks so woke though. He's such a trust fund baby.

I could totally relate to the "son of a great man" part. It's something that I try not to dwell on.
You gotta get Paul McCartney
I didn't know who this guy was although the voice sounded familiar then it struck me who it was and it kinda blew my mind as the last time I saw anything of him he was still a reasonably young guy, trouble is I always remember people as I saw them last and never accounting for the years that have past
Julian is extremely talented photographer.
I like Juian a lot and I happen to know Saltwater very very well. Im 36 now BUT…my primary through intermediate Catholic school music teacher must have loved it because she had every class from yr1-yr8 sing this song haha.
Saltwater wells in my eyes.
Beautiful story he just told
I literally watched a Beatles doc this morning out of pure randomness.
I love Julian. He overcame so much. Can you imagine you're dad being a famous gazillionaire, and him simply being indifferent about you? John Lennon is an epic piece of shit. Embodies everything wrong with the hippie culture.
Tend to agree. It takes a complete lack of insight and humanity to sing "war is over if you want it."
There's more than one way to, intentionally or not, hurt a vulnerable person like a child. Abandonment and indifference can be cruel in parent-child relationship.
THANK YOU JOE FOR INVITING HIM OVER. ❤❤ Yoko really fucked up everything for him.
Love Julian, got all his albums. He's a great artist, his music is incredible.
@robl6933 - Incredible? Kind of a stretch...
Your right it's subjective. People think Taylor Swift is incredible and I can't listen to her music.

James McCartney i(son of Paul) is very gifted musically as well. I always thought it would be fun if they made an album together as Lennon & McCartney.
