Hey Susie. Very sad. I'm at SF shows and someone wrote RIP Sam Cutler on the sidewalk on Shakedown in chalk. That's how I heard about two hours ago! RIP Sam! Best Rock and Roll Manager in History!
70 - 74 ...those were my favorite years .. 8 great albums .. small venues .. youthful energy .. the planting of the seeds .. before it got big and competitive ..
It's tough listening to the current (Fall 2024) season of the Deadcast all about the Spring 1978 tour. That was the beginning of the end. I know people adore the Brent years but I rarely listen beyond Spring 78, it just doesn't do much for me.
I had the best teacher's, Ows always hugged me, & never a harsh word, just love & support, Crazy Otto, Wavy Gravy...in fact Tweaky Gary and I were picked up by Ken Kesey & Wavy on Shattuck & University, as we watched the Furthur Bus pull over at our bus stop, we got on ...but, I had already been made! RIP ALL my loving teachers, elders and friends....(Wavy's book signing tour)

Right before the start of night 1 of the 87 Hampton run I remember us being lectured on the importance of good behavior at shows by an English guy. I've often wondered over the years if that was Sam.
I waa supposed to have met up with him, and had chatted with him for awhile on various occasions . Not in any way like on each others speed dial or such but enough to say I agree with you. I'll keep the rest as hazy-forgotten memories mingled with imaginations of fiction. I am out of touch these days with any scene. Stuff happens and seems older we get, the less time there is. I'm glad to hear this and I'm glad for the music. He did a lot and went through a lot and got burned by people, who should know better, instead of having his back. The crew, never met or spoke with most of them, were one of the most solid group of individuals in that or any scene. Some like to bark, or did, and some have always seemed good people. I just wish I could have been born 10-15 years earlier to have, just to have....
Thanks for posting this conversation! I only wish Parrish didn't constantly talk over Cutler. Dude always needs to say something to prove he was there & important to the Dead.
Hey Elmono. Its kinda tough when you call in. The delay is super bad. You pause and wait and you still end up talking over each other...haha You would think Sirius would handle it...like they do with the rest of the shows on their channel...
Had the cool opportunity to meet, shake hands with and talk to Sam Cutler when he came to a Splintered Sunlight show in my home town about two years ago, pre-pandemic. He was way cool and very approachable, no airs or attitude. Splintered Sunlight is a Dead cover band from the Philadelphia area, and they are pretty damn good, videos of them on You Tube. Nice SYF ring on Cutler in the photo. Jerry with a gun to his head? WTF??? Crazy stories from the road. EGYPTIAN KUSH UP!
Yeah BB! That's hella cool you met Sam! Get Splintered Sunlight on the Ventura gig...I dig that ring he has...I believe there is a story behind it...I do not know it though....
