    They're ignoring the fact that businesses rely on hotels. A Charger tax will increase the cost of doing business in San Diego. Our medical and tech industries operate every day of the year and they're are a lot more important than football. They're an asset to our city, nation and economy.
    A Charger tax will only increase the incentive for businesses to move out of San Diego.

    They could renovate Qualcomm for $250 million like USC is doing with the LA Coliseum. The Chargers can afford it with the TV money they're bringing in. It's a good location with an effective public transit system to get people there. Bad stadium.

    Take the current stadium. Draw a line perpendicular to the 50 yard line. Tear down the stadium on one side of the line. Build new seating that is closer to the field. Save a lot money.

    it's sad that most people don't seem to realize that this "tax" (which is tiny and will keep absolutely no one from ever visiting San Diego) is only on tourists staying in hotels. Seattle, Indianapolis and Houston paid for their stadiums the same way and no one seems to give a shit......or even mention it.

    • @callmejefe
      @callmejefe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with you in part. The hotel tax increase is coming and will not drastically affect the amount of tourists coming to San Diego. What I don't agree on is the notion that an increase in the hotel tax isn't a tax increase on San Diego citizens. You have to consider the opportunity cost. We can only raise the hotel tax to a certain level before it does become detrimental. If we use it build a stadium, it blocks the opportunity to use the tax's revenue for other civic needs, such as basic infrastructure. Thus, next time the city needs increased revenue the tax will be on San Diego citizens.

      Basically, every MEGA musician ignoring San Diego in favor of LA, San Francisco, Vegas, Seattle, Phoenix, etc.
      No college football national championship games

    Petco Park is the only reason I go to San Diego once a year. I'm not sure if NFL games do the same job of drawing in out of towners given the small number of games each year and the fact that going to an NFL game already costs a ton without the gas/travel expenses.

      It's not coming out of the locals pockets, it will be taxes from the hotel tax. SD has one of the lowest races on their hotels. I'm sure someone planning to visits sd and it's attractions won't be turned away with a few bucks more in taxes , especially when the raise in hotel tax will put it on par with all other cities across the nation and those cities still have nothing on sd attractions

  • @JustinGreene0224

    The one thing not one of these videos points out is who was actually going to pay for this shit...not visiting football fans, but SDCC...you want to see the actual business driver in SD leave when their attendees are actually the ones on the hook for this crap, then by all means you should have voted for this. 11 games that struggle to sell 30K tickets, and half of those are visiting, versus a 5-day event that draws the population of Nashville. Spanos can shove it an pay rent for the next 20yrs in LA.

      the SUPER BOWLS hosted by the City brought in $500 MILLION per....and San Diego USED to have them on average every & years , ALL that is gone and so are the 200,000 NFL tourists that USED to come to SD to watch their teams play. NO San Diegan would have EVER spent a penny in Taxes if they didnt
      stay in a Hotel in San Diego. Thats what so many people were either too emotional or too
      stupid to realize. Im not defending Spanos, but you are making an totally emotional argument

They forgot about every Aztec football game, the poinsettia and holiday bowls which draw huge crowds. We even have a fucking parade for the bowl games! Not to mention the copa America soccer games that were held there. Whoever made this didn't do there research.

    • @mexnemo11
      @mexnemo11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      durango9595 yeah but if you think the Chargers will let those teams/shows play at their new venue, you're delusional. maybe if the Chargers won a super bowl then this would be different, but they don't deserve one. just like the Padres. I'm a fan of both teams but let's be realistic, why doesn't Spanos pay just like the LA Rams owner?

    • @durango9595
      @durango9595 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's convenient that the video left out the fact Spanos is paying 2/3 ($650 million) towards the stadium project. The whole point is for this stadium to have additional uses to attract better quality large events other than just Chargers games. It's amazing Qualcomm has been able to pull off as many events as it has in the condition it's in. It's not even nice enough to fill with dirt for the monster trucks and supercross that moved to the ballpark... There's nothing saying this stadium is exclusively for the Chargers and will be empty the rest of the year. That's ridiculous! Just look at the Arizona Cardinals stadium, since it opened in 2008 they've already had 2 Super Bowls, 2 bcs championship games, a bcs playoff and ncaa march madness games. Where would you rather hold a major event, a 100 degree sandbox in the suburbs or in the middle of downtown on the San Diego bay?

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I had two issues with this.
    1. They listed Mexico as an asset. Lol poor ass country.
    2. They brought DJT in this and it has nothing to do with presidential candidates or rich people in general.
    Other than that, I agree.

    These comments are bizarre, even by youtube standards. What possible reason would Bill Simmons or Tony Hawk have to WANT San Diego taxpayers to get screwed? Haven't you seen enough wealthy owners use the threat of leaving a city to get regular people to pay for their shiny new toy? This is a game, and the billionaires are winning.

    • @afisch1983
      @afisch1983 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Except if you watched the video, you'd see that literally the exact same thing happened with Petco, the hotel tax couldn't cover the cost, and taxpayers ended up on the hook for the rest. That is exactly what will happen again. There's no reason to think it won't.

    • @sillybolegged
      @sillybolegged 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The TOT tax is currently one of the city's four major revenue streams. Why should we dedicate the funds created by an increase in this tax to the Spanos family? This is our money and it should be used to benefit the city as a whole not individual business interests. Furthermore, publicly funded stadiums are a terrible investment as the economic impact of such projects is negligible. Please google "economics of publicly funded sports stadiums." The results include numerous studies which all conclude it to be a terrible use of public funds.

      How selfish. You do know that local business use hotel auditoriums for business meetings. Local Schools for Proms. Local residents for Weddings and Anniversaries. That comes out to more than 5 or 10 bucks.
      Plus I love how one moment you are touting some miracle free money that tourists pay for and San Diego won't. Then the next moment you say, but if I do I do not care it is only this much. So which is it? not going to cost or going to cost?
      A tax is a tax. That is revenue for the city that can be used for things that actually matter. Things like our infrastructure, police and firefighters, our pension troubles, our Homeless. You want to tie up that revenue for the next 30+ years on a stadium that will be obsolete in 20 years.

    All of which would have had international visitors come in and PAY the hotel tax that people didn't want to go up?

  • @G_Kaz

    Fact: With the current extremely dated Qualcomm Stadium, we will never get a Super Bowl, no major event want to come within a mile of that piece of crap concrete slab. Supercross and Monster Jam have already left the stadium to a much smaller Petco park. We are stuck with the GIANT USED CAR TENT SALE! Eventually Qualcomm will host no events period and we will be paying just to keep it from falling apart which we already do.
    Fact: With a new stadium we are guaranteed a Super Bowl if not multiple ones and one Super Bowl can boost local economy by 200-700 million. The increased space could even appeal to a World Series being held in our fine city of San Diego. Comic Con is itching to grow and expand but San Diego has yet to expand the Convention Center, Comic Con is without a doubt the biggest event held there but they want more space. The new stadium would offer more than enough space for Comic Con and guarantee their stay. Not to mention how many more larger events could be held with the huge increase in space the stadium will create. Beyond Convention Center, the new stadium would appeal to many more artist and performances since it will be a new, modern, clean, stat of the art stadium. The possibility for San Diego acquiring a Major League Soccer team is greatly increased and MLS in the United States has grown by 12.7% and MLS franchise have grown by 52% and MLS in the US wants to add 4 more teams by 2020 and with this new stadium and how popular Soccer is in San Diego we would be a great location for a team. This could also mean MLS championships and even a World Cup. Lets not forget about the Olympics in 2028, a major reason we lost the bid for 2024 was lack of a central stadium facility. We have 34 of 37 necessary venues for the Olympics, I mean the Olympic training facility is located in San Diego, this stadium would without a doubt put us at the top of the bid for 2028 Summer Olympics. This stadium would without a doubt help clean up and modernize a darker part of downtown San Diego which currently is a sight for sore eyes if you have ever wondered around the transit center area. That's a shame considering Gas Lamp, Petco Park and the Convention Center are right there and just down the street is a slum of downtown San Diego. The new stadium would clean this up and create new incentive for more business and development expansion from Petco Park to the Coronado Bridge.
    In the end of the day the new Chargers stadium, the "Convadium" makes a lot of sense for San Diego and could not only guarantee the continual return of our biggest events in San Diego like the Comic Co but the increased interest of dozens and dozens of new events, conventions, sporting organizations and much more. If not, we will not only lose the Chargers but potentially lose the biggest events in San Diego not only making the Qualcomm more useless than it is but potentially the Convention Center and even Petco Park.

      Ginges Kon your second "fact" relies on the team not running 3-4 or last season's 4-12. Unless you can magically ensure perfect seasons and super bowls, your second "fact" is useless, even if the local economy boost merited the costs, which they wouldn't.

    • @G_Kaz
      @G_Kaz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My point has nothing to do with the Chargers making it to the SuperBowl to have a SuperBowl. Most the time the NFL has a SuperBowl at a new stadium University of Phoenix Stadium 2008,2015, Met Life Stadium 2012. A new Stadium is almost guaranteed a Superbowl within 2 years of completion and the possibility of more than one SuperBowl is very high especially in a new stadium in an appealing location like San Diego.

      How about the 15 million a year the city will save on getting rid of Qualcomm? Or the economic impact from a Super Bowl? The city pays 200 mil a year for parks and req and prop c is a wash. Actually many studies say the tot hike will have a surplus for the gf 1 cent on the dollar. And prop c is written so chargers can't touch any money from the current rate 12.5. Did u know the rate probably not... oh yeah there is also the convention expansion which will bring more money to gf. Conventions and hotels make up 15% of revenue in the gf. We need more space. Contiguous is not happening its illegal, dead on the water only chance in hell of keeping comic con which San Diego locals don't give a fuck about is the convaduim and comic. On knows it. Guess what contiguous will require 67% of the vote witch doesn't have a chance in hell the only way they're only chance is this prop. That's just economics but there is also city brand and community. More people watch the chargers in one day than go to all our libraries in a year but I don't here anyone bitching about they 400 mm palace to hold books.
