  • This 5 gallon low-tech aquarium is a lovely mess that I am forever learning from! As much life in here as in any other aquarium in my fishroom.

Alas, I've always "got my hands in the tank." :) Thank you for supporting the channel!

a very interesting tank! You could sit and look at it for ages. And yes I would watch your reality tv show, my kind of aquascaping (higgeldy piggledy).

Always a place for "higgeldy piggledy" in the fish room :)

Very neat tank! I will be setting up a 5.5 gallon tank soon for some blue dream shrimp!

Blue dreams are the easiest neo’s to breed, next to cherry. Good luck!

I saw one of my oto's this morning when feeding. He looks fat and sassy like yours. If his belly gets any bigger he might blow! Maybe its a female. I dont know for sure. My homework this weekend is to read more about Oto's. My point is, like you, its so satisfying to see his big tummy because it means we are doing something right. Yours looks pretty comfy in that tank. My annubis in the same tank has produced a 2nd flower. So cool!

Oto's are such an important creature in our hobby. Their small size, modest price and incredible prowess at eating certain algae make them indispensable.

Very nice...my broad leaf anubias never grew stems that long. I'm kinda sorta thinking of starting a 20 long with some amanos, endlers and fairy corys. We'll see. But this gives me some ideas. What substrate would you recommend? I'd kind of like to have a carpet plant like dwarf sag, so would something like eco-complete be the way to go?

Hey FRF, thanks for the question. In this tank I don't even use a soil substrate just leaves and botanical bits. The plants are all floating or epiphytes so they don't require "dirt." However, I do use aquasoil and other additives in all my other tanks especially if you want even the simplest of carpets. I would go with any type of Aquasoil (UNS, Fluval, Dennerle, ADA) before using Eco Complete. While Eco complete is bio-active it is otherwise inert with little in the way of nutrition for plants.

@LushSaltyAquariums heyL&S, one more question if you don't mind? For a novice plant person like me, what kind of carpet plant would you recommend? I'd buy decent lights for plant growth. I mentioned dwarf sag just because I like the look of it, but if there's an easier to maintain carpet plant that covers the bottom rather quickly, what would you recommend? Sorry to bug you

@@FishRfun Hey buddy, the helanthiums or Sags or dwarf swords are easier to have success with than Monte Carlo or Hairgrass, esp if you are not planning to use Co2. But even with Co2 those plants are easier. Tip don't be afraid to combine plants for carpet. it looks more natural and if one does better than the other you just go with it!
