What a repository of knowledge and what treasure trove of the past. I wish all these books mentioned in the video by the gentleman, whether fictional or non fictional could be listed some where. Many would die to get their hands on these valuable archives.

Calcutta was the most prominent centre of Tawaiffs from 1800 s to 1930 s or so ,Supna ,shrijan ,svetangini ,zohra ,Badi malka ,malka chulbuli ,gauhar ,malka (Agra) ,wahidan , Indubala, angurbala ,jadumonee ,Akhtari etc etc were all great classical singers regaling the cultural and commercial capital of India. Luckily no disrespect to Lahore , and the great Tawaiffs of this city!

May Allah bless all those who left this life. They were all Gems of Pakistan. I have the honor of meeting Rani on a flight to Karachi. She was so soft spoken with a beautiful way of talking. We need to tell our young generation about our glorious past. Lahore & Karachi were both like Paris & Dubai till late 60s.Thank you for taking us in time when Arts culture Poetry & Moral values prevailed❤😢.

Not gems of Pakistan, but Hindustan (get the hint from Heera)...when Pakistan came into form nothing left. While India is still recognizing the united history, try recognizing your united history as well. Please understand, had there been no Hindustan..there would have NEVER been a Pakistan.

Yes they were Hindus n Iranian women bought by Mughals they were renamed by their teachers n mentors who use to raise them or by their parents to gel easily in the household they were classically trained dancers n singers specially from Iran who were born from mistresses of the kings n royalties therefore they were so sophisticated n educated.kotha means terraces ,back then they had house which had terrace with Dari or arches so when they perform it’s visible from 4;sides. These Kathas were actually finishing schools for royalties where learned reading writing poetry literature political science n mannerism, body language, psychology, mind reading n face reading n music was for entertainment. Indian courtesans were best at dancing n it’s from UP where mujra actually started as these women who were called bai in UP were excellent kathak performers so they were taken to Mughal courts but they came to fame when they choreographed kathak on Urdu poetry n ghazals then slowly gradually the finishing schools of the tawaifs adapted mujra as it became the usp or trp whatever u may say that’s why all pictures u sea are of majority of Hindu women who we’re performers (dancer )they had Muslim names coz either they were mistress of a nawab or an offspring of a nawab

Before the advent of separatism and fundamentalism...Muslim women wore the bindi as well as the maang tikka in the centre.Maang tikka continues.
We cannot forget we belong to the same stock...a lot has diffused into our religion culture that sometimes it was hard to differentiate. After the advent of Mughals Hindu women wore the burkha even till as recently as the 60s.
Time gone never to come back again.

Don't try to add class and finesse to your ancestors. And don't call them better in loyalty than wives of today. Maybe your wives and your daughters, comming from the same lineage, are not loyal.
The channel needs to understand their role and their niche audience. There is more to lahore than your own ancestry.

I do sincerely hope that you as a individual are not deliberately trying to make a certain group of ladies , into woman of substance and dignified members of society. Please stop? I feel so sorry for these unfortunate poor souls ? Yet choice’s are what they made of their own lives. Maybe when they were children they had no choice? Yet when they became adults they had two legs to run on, and could have walked into a new way of life ? I hope you understand that society will never accept them as respectable members of society , no woman of great or small household will have anything to do with them or their scandals way way of thinking. If you must highlight something then show the world how or if these women contribute towards the partition of India achieving the making of Pakistan.

Non the less; it appears that they aren't 'prostitutes'. One could may be compare them to modern day actresses.
I suppose much depends on what you consider a " bench mark of decency and morality "; if one uses 'islam and Sharia' as the bench mark, then these ladies really do appear to fall short in every conceivable way.

@@AyeshaKhan-uy2io most times they had no choice and all men of all religions were their patrons. It’s sad the blame is left only at their doorstep. Nevertheless they were artists in their own right and that deserves dignity. People in lawful relationships nowadays behave in far more atrocious ways than these women did in their time. I think that was the point they were trying to make
