  • We all love videos of dogs with their head out the window tongues flapping but what do you do when your dog bark erratically when in the car? Expert Dog Trainer, Victoria Stilwell shows you how to get your dog to behave.
'It's Me or the Dog' follows world renowned British dog trainer Victoria Stilwell as she aids dog owners whose homes have been destroyed and relationships stretched to breaking point by their disobedient canines. From unruly hounds to pampered pooches, Victoria has seen it all.

Well in my country you are not allowed to block the windows. And my Belgian is frantic when driving

Thats brilliant! I cant wait to try it. My hope is to be able to take my rescue dog with me wothout loss of hearing, hair or sanity. At least its a new approach to try but i love the simple logic. My dog reacts to everything he sees so if he cant see..... i hope this works for us.....Thanks for the help

With my husband's help, we will try this for our rescue girl. She barks all the time and we have to crate her and cover most of the crate during car rides. Here's to hoping this works because I haven't found anything that works yet and we love to go camping, etc. Thank you!

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT he barks A LOT... So, leaving home is always a challenge for us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest ‘doggy school’ is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

We had problems with our dog also. He used to bark, chew table etc. when we were not at home. Both my husband and I work a lot and had no time to take our Bud to dog training classes. We asked one friend who works in foster care (he is always surrounded by dogs) what we should do. He recommended one online dog behavior trainer. I love this trainer bit.ly/2CjOdZZ It helped us a lot, and I strongly recommend it for you.

Yeah I would find obedience classes personal. But maybe trying putting them on a leash and sitting, ignore them until they are quiet then praise them and treat them with a high value treat or toy

I’ve been told my dogs won’t stop barking the entire time I’m out of the house. Even if I’m only gone a short time, they’re incessant. How do I fix this?

Please be careful practising this method. I did so and overheated my dog as i couldn’t open windows (it moved the covers) and the covers wouldn’t allow for air circulation into his crate which he promptly filled with very hot breath as he paced and barked incessantly.
May try casual sitting in the car crate with a new toy or filled Kong, with the car on and off, journeys to the end of the street and back only for a few weeks, putting him in the middle car, then back out again immediately to totally desensitise him to the car after a few months

You cannot block windows when driving, at least not in the U.S., even for a short drive. You'd get a ticket.

Block them by using those car window sun blockers for toddlers! Those are allowed :)

how the hell am i supposed to do this on my own, this is not a "practical" solution to my dog barking in the car.

Kc Adam Sky Oh man, I totally agree!! I can neither afford this nor safely drive around in my busy inner-city neighborhood with all that stuff blocking my lines of sight. I don't ever take my dog in the car anymore unless it's to the vet… she's so insane in the car it's awful.

+Kc Adam Sky i think the idea is for this to be a training tool, not a permanent solution.
you take the time to do this until the dog learns to relax in the car

You could try a toy like a Kong stuffed with kibble and something like pumpkin, yogurt, baby food, etc. Freeze the Kong and see if they are comfortable enough to eat in the car. Then they will look forward to a ride

You need to do this only a couple times, and then the dog will automatically know not to bark. So get help from a friend or something

You can buy a blanket and a cardboard just like in the video. Pull over and open the blanket a little bit? I mean you can excuse yourself all you want but I know how I'd do it.

Its not illegal at all , all they have done is taped cardboard over windows and put blanket over the dog guard behind drivers seat.
In effect its made the land rover discovery into a temporary van at back , can be done same with any vehicle, you still have all round vision using wing mirrors so is legal and safe.
Once the dog(s) stppped reacting to passing traffic etc they were rewarded with curtains removed unwanted behaviour, curtain back in place after several attempts and in 1 case 1 of my particularly nervous GSD rescues several weeks they all travel perfectly safely with no reactive behaviour with no cardboard blocking windows.

How is it anymore illegal than driving in a panel van? You use your side mirrors to navigate!
