    Dan, thanks for the memories mate. Back in 1979 I drove the first vehicle to cross this area following Madigan's 1939 camel journey - compass only, no tracks, all cross country thus laying the foundation for the now famous Madigan Line. As a point of interest in 1985 and about five and a half kilometres past Madigan's Camp 12 heading East, at age 52 I crossed the Madigan Line (not in existence then naturally) with a pack on my back and powered only by two feet and a heartbeat. I was heading southward on compass 155 degrees true while walking solo across Australia north to south with no vehicle support and passing through the centre of the Simpson Desert. Yes mate ... it is quiet out there - the sound is deafening! Back in 1980 I wrote a story and penned a poem about my special place. I named it Big Red. It was a place of solitude and reflection for me and I certainly didn't envisage that one day it would become famous and also as a challenging climb and playground for the 4X4 travellers who visit this remote and beautiful area. At 89 I never tire of enjoying and reliving the past through stories like yours. Cheers.

      Wow Denis, that is absolutely epic, and I'm honoured to have you drop by and watch my video.
      Thanks for laying the foundations so people like me can get out and enjoy that stunning place!

    Hi Dan,
    Just seen your trips, most inspiring.
    Would love to see some of the outback towns you leave (Mt Dare etc) and arrive at. Your special perspective in filming these would be great 👍😊

    All that water! I've been to Birdsville 4 or 5 times and never seen it like that!
    Big Red didn't stress the Jeep much at all :)

    Dan, looks like another great adventure. To comment on your fuel consumption I just drove my Gladiator 3500 miles around the US west - a lot of highway but some good trails too - and averaged 18.8 miles per gallon! That's with RTT, 15 gallons of water, climbing gear, dive gear, and everything else. Granted a lot of highway, but still, that's pretty good! The more I drive my jeep the happier I am with me it's performance.

    If it's true uv light kills covid, it's kind of a good thing symptom-wise you were in the desert getting plenty of sunlight. I'm so glad you 2 are feeling better! I can't wait to go across the U.S. in my manual gladiator you helped me decide to get a gladiator a few months ago. I can't wait to start my own adventure you've inspired me with your videos

    Bummer about you guys getting COVID just as you start your crossing. But being alone in a scenic desert is a good way to self-isolate. But it still sucks though. Glad to you guys came away well. Was your Simpson Desert fuel consumption 50% more (or higher) than your usual on-road consumption? What is your usual on-road fuel consumption with your setup?

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On road I'm getting around 12-13L/100km, in the Simpson it was just under 20L/100km.
