Thank you for posting this. I was cleaning it and when I went to put it back together I had a gear I didn’t know where it went, and this showed me exactly where it belonged. I subscribed.
HELL YEAH! This video was clutch in helping me take apart my 690 and cleaning the gearbox for the wiper blade. Just an FYI the lubricant inside the gearbox was dried up with long hair that got trapped which caused it to seize up. I used a razor blade to cut out the dried lubricant and sprayed the inside with Liquid Wrench Silicone Spray. After using the brush blade to help turn the gears to fully lubricate, it worked like a charm. Thank you sir!
Thank you for making this video! This is the exact problem I’ve run into and I had no idea what to do.... until I watched this video! So anyway, thank you for saving me a bunch of time, with a 9 month old baby at home, I need as much time as I can get.
Maybe could have just purchased the replacement gears, but got the side brush and motor (refurbished) for $20 on Amazon when the side brush quit turning. Thanks for the video, and the gear repair primer.
Our robot runs well but doesn't seem to pick up items very well. Have cleaned everything but cannot see if the brushes are turning. Is there a way to test or troubleshoot if brush motor is working?
You can run a diagnostic check. Or put some salt on a hard floor and see if the Roomba can collect it in the bin. If the brushes are not working, very little will go through to the bin.
Hi, I cannot find the gears kit to replace the lateral brush... you said Amazon.. but hard to find them, I can only find the whole assembly with the motor and case... thanks
We came home from a vacation and found my roomba bin had liquid in it. Somebody (no one is fessing up) apparently was in my house while we were gone and spilled something on the floor. There was a dried up spot in the dining room that was suspicious looking. I totally cleaned out the roomba, dried out the bin, but it isn't working quite right. It will vacuum, but all the dust and lint stays in the discharge opening and doesn't make it to the bin. Is there something I can do? I noticed you made a comment to someone about not washing the bin because of the fan. Can the fan be replaced? Should I order a complete new bin? My Roomba is a 805 model. Thank you.
I looked on Amazon and eBay. They seem to be out of stock. If you click the eBay link for the gears in the description, it appears they have the whole motor assembly available. It costs a little more than just the gears did but probably worth it if you really want your Roomba fixed.
So I found the idea of getting new gears into the side brush motor great until I foud out the price. The links in the description don't sell these gears so I looked for others on ebay. There they sell for almost 30 dollar. With shipping these gears cost more than $50,-!! The complete unit (incl. brush) sells for €35,95, shipping is €9,95.
It seems like the availability of the gears varies. I don't know what the deal is. I wonder if Roomba shuts down companies selling repair parts. Mine are still working fine thankfully. If you aren't in a hurry, you might check on Amazon and eBay once a week or so to see if prices have dropped.
Hi. My gears are not stripped but brush is not spinning in regular mode. I ran diagnostics (test 19), and brush is spinning slowly. What could be a reason? Dead motor?
Could be the motor. I'm guessing you have removed the brush. They can get a lot of hair wrapped around them and you can't see it until you remove it. I think our side brush sometimes stops but I'm not sure what triggers it to stop. It might be when it bumps something. You might want to check any switches and sensors.
My Roomba was making a noise that caused me to open up the side brush motor casing - I found the same thing you did, some of the gear teeth had broken. However, looking to replace the gears, why are the pair of plastic gears selling for $35 and a whole replacement motor (casing and all) is selling for $40? What am I missing here? It feels ridiculous to buy a whole new motor when I only need the gears (really, jut one of them) ... but if I'm gonna spend $35 on just the gears, I might as well spend $40 on a whole new motor. Seriously, what am I missing? I expect a fair price to be no more than $10. Can someone post a link for just the gears? Thanks!
The availability seems to be hit or miss. I don't understand why they are so hard to find. I just found some on AliExpress. I'm not sure how good they are. It looks like they have some coupons which might lower the price a few dollars. www.aliexpress.com/item/4000751425473.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.7f8d4253v7Ajfq&algo_pvid=5f6ba89c-c098-45c8-9aa3-a34ad4d6efa9&algo_expid=5f6ba89c-c098-45c8-9aa3-a34ad4d6efa9-0&btsid=0ab50f0815929701070855216e515f&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_
@@Rickmakes Found the problem it seems to be the docking station for some reason its not charging the irobot properly. I've talk to customer service and they said to replace it after doing some test
Thanks for posting this! I have to replace the side brush mechanism altogether, so I have to remove the battery in order to do that, or did you just remove it because you were replacing it anyways? Thanks.
I had replaced the battery around a year before making this video. It is not a bad idea to just pull it out when you are working on other parts. It is easy to remove once you have it open. This way you don't accidentally short anything out.
Thank you for this video! My Roomba doesn’t make noise, but gets hung up on little things, like the transition piece between tile and wood floor. It even wore it down a little! D you think its a gear problem?
It's hard to say. I would take the bottom off and check the parts for wear. You might be able to compare them with the parts on mine from this video. The problem might be obvious once you get it apart.
Rick Makes.- We realized that the tires are bald! That’s our Roomba’s problem. $29 to replace each tire assembly is the cheapest I can find it. $60 for both. YIKES! Thanks for your reply.
You could try (carefully) to pry it off with a screwdriver on each side. Just know that it could crack. I'm not sure I would rinse out the dirt bin. It contains the fan. You could probably safely wipe it out with a damp washcloth. I use an air compressor or a leaf blower to clean mine out.

I found an entire motor replacement on Amazon. The gears are either not carried or as much as a new motor (or more).
I'm not sure why the gears are so scarce. It seems like it would be easy for someone to make them by the thousands.
