- Wide angles are the obvious choice for a lens when shooting landscapes, but there are plenty of times when you really need to have a telephoto lens in your camera bag to get the most out of a scene.
If you’d like to join me for a landscape photography workshop I’ll be co-leading groups in 4 workshops in Tuscany, Iceland and the Dolomites in 2018. Check out my website for more information

I appreciate that this is quite an old video, Andy, but I wanted to thank you for it. You are one of the most genuinely helpful as well as inspiring photographers on TH-cam.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment, really glad you find the videos useful
One word mate “respect”. Top notch content, delivery and production values. Head and shoulders above anything else on TH-cam. A real pleasure to watch, thank you.
Thanks so much, that's really good of you to say. Much appreciated
I am surprised that I haven’t found this gem of a channel before. Sensibility in the jungle of superfluous mindless technicalities. Gives me the same good vibes as Sean Tucker. Instant fan.
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video and like the channel
I watched your videos on my 55" tv...and all pics we're amazing... I went to bed, keep watching the same video on my S22ULTRA..... And I realized that is not the same thing. I recommend to all visitors to watch those videos on a big screen to appreciate what this man is doing. Thank you man, keep going. You are so precise, explaining everything, and even the video editing is meticulously well edited. Of course perfect shot with your Fujifilms.❤
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoy the videos and my images
Wow that waterfall shot comparison between wide-angle and telephoto was top-notch
Cheers Tristan
I am from Bali, so happy that you mentioned it.
Bali is wonderful, I'd love to go back
Let me know if you wanna come again. I want to meet you
Oh my God, the photos in this video!!! I came to learn about lenses, and I ended up daydreaming about travelling to these amazing places! What a photographer
Thanks so much...really glad you enjoyed the video and the images
this is the highest quality content i have seen on youtube
Thanks so much, thats a lovely comment and I'm really glad you find the videos useful
I've never shot landscapes with anything else then a wide angle lens. This is food for thought. I knew telephoto lenses compressed the background but never considered using it. I've learned so much all ready from watching your videos.
Was looking forward to a new video. Glad you made one.
Hi Alexander, thanks for the comment. I'm really glad you found the video useful
There are alot of people in TH-cam talking about Photography but most of them Don't have nice pictures. This is a Problem for their credibility because i want to learn from People who are better than myself. I am honestly impressed by your work andy, I watched alot of your Videos already and just want to thank you for inspiring me to beyond my imagination 🔥
Thanks Maximilian, I'm really glad you found the video useful
I was deciding between a prime and a telephoto. I know they're apples and oranges but this video helped me a lot. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video
The "compression effect" of telephoto lenses is the result of perspective. The image made with a telephoto presents a narrow angle of view, and this emphasizes the compression of the distant objects because they are magnified in the telephoto view. You don't notice the effect in wide-angle photographs because the effect is subsumed by the wider field of view (with its emphasis on the near elements in the shot, in which such compression isn't evident). But the effect is in every wide angle shot that has layers of distant image elements. You just have to look for it and you'll see it.
Love using my Panasonic Leica 100-400mm for Landscape 🙏
Yeah, 100-400 is a really nice focal range
@@AndyMumford full frame equivalent to 200-800 cause it's a mft Sensor 🙌
So far I thought I could only use a wide lens for landscape photography. Learned a lot.
Glad you found it useful
An absolute master class, filled with eloquence in the form of beautiful descriptive words and stunning images.
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed it
😲 Those are some the most stunning landscape photography I’ve ever seen. Explaining by showing really conveys the message of using a telephoto lens. But man are those photos jaw dropping spectacular as well the locations.
Thanks so much, glad you liked the video
I really appreciate all of this information. I'm a complete beginner and my parents bought me a 70-300mm along with my Dslr. They didn't really know what they'd bought and I love landscape photography but didn't want to just push the 70-300mm aside. Plus, it's all I have to play with at the moment til I can afford a wide angle. So thank you! You've inspired me.
Thanks so much for the comment. If the video inspired you that's brilliant! All the best with your photography
Haven't really touched my telephoto for a while… Then I stumbled across this!

Hello. After seeing this movie my tamron 70-200 just became the favourite one :)) othewise it would have bee the tokina ultra wide. All that you presented, it's mind blowing. I'm an architect and I always had a crush for good compositions. Congratulations! And most of all thank you.
Actually, I have to rectify... Ultra wides equally as telephotos are the best one should have
Thanks so much Laurentiu, really glad you found the video useful

That is my point of view... i recently purchased a fujifilm x t200 with both the 18-55 and the 55-200 mm lenses for traveling. I got a full frame, but i wanted a quality option to take every day and everywhere in a small back bag, tripod included... pleased to meet you!
Great video. Next time I shoot landscape I will take my 55-200 with me.
