The fan translation names were definitely in the style of old Ace Attorney: Some straight puns, some a bit more roundabout (compare “Patricia Roland” to the canon “Paht Rohl”), and some that were references to the Japanese names (Raymonds Japanese name also references a shield).
These names are pure Spirit of Justice-style obvious name puns.

I believe the reason we are finally getting a localized version and new names for the new characters is because some of the most important characters that appeared in this game (like Eustace/Sebastian) are going to make a return in the next sequel Ace Attorney 7.

I wish Sebastian got a better name. 'Useless Winner' is just a mean pun for the poor guy, at least with Debeste it was a bit more cleaver and helped to boost an ego without being so corny as to say 'I'm a Winner'.

Only the names of Raymond Shields (Eddie Fender), Justine Courtney (Verity Gavélle), and Sebastian Debeste (Eustace Winner) have been confirmed. Also the surnames of Horace Knightley (Knight), Ethan Rooke (Rook), and Nichole Swift (Lloyd. Will likely be Tabby or Tabitha Lloyd for the pun on "tabloid").

it’s kinda starting to sink in that people might have to stop themselves from cringing or laughing upon seeing Sebastian for the first time and seeing himself confidently calling himself “Eustace”.
I love that Redd White is representing Capcom. Unfortunately, they will always be Sebastian and Raymond to me. I like Justine's new name though. The new names you made up are hilarious and totally think they are about to become canon, lol. The Jeffery Expert one was amazing. And not Sexo Fender being Ray without the hat 😭🙏

I don't think the new(official) names are bad, but just not what i expected them to be.
I was expecting the names to at least be similar to the fan translated ones like the Great Ace Attorney was to its fan translation. Minus Lord Stronghart, though most of those characters names were similar to the fan translation.
So its just shocking that the official names for these characters are so different compared to the fan translation, considering how good that translation was.(about as good as DGS fan translation)

well they are not really new in English. These characters never had an english name until the remake.
For most of us, they're new cuz we got used to fan translation names. It was like, a long time since it was released

I don't get why people are so upset. Translation and localization is hard to do properly, and there are very few people who actually try to be creative and change something like names to be more recognizable for the target audience. I can imagine it wasn't an easy job for the fan translators, but neither was it for the Capcom translators. What would the fan translators think if Capcom made money with names that the fans created, while the fan translators don't see a penny?

@@Cheresnya I have to deal with a fairly different issue. I am German, and there are many German-speaking fans who don't like that some of the English names were translated into German, i.e. _adapted to them as the target audience._ Many people just don't like changes in general, they see it as a matter of principle. As an aspiring translator myself, I can only hope to find at least someone who appreciates that kind of work.
