    My first playthrough I went in blind and went for it. I was actually doing fairly well. No child labor, minimal 24 hour shifts, research was steady, supplies were good, and I had housing. I was a little behind on heat, but it was only chilly. Then all the refugees showed up and my plans to up the heat got delayed to take care of them. Then I found out about the storm and knew I was screwed. It was a ton of fun and taught me a lot about what to prioritize and what sacrifices to make

      @@BenchwarmerWoW Yes, I beat it on my second playthrough. I learned from my first time and was a lot harder on the people this time around. Child labor, extended shifts on basically everything, I knew what to research in what order, and I aimed for getting the steam core outpost asap. I went for Faith to more easily keep hope high. It was a lot easier when I knew what to go for and how everything worked. I'm going to try the other scenarios next before doing the DLC

    First thing to build should always be the Workshop and immediately research Faster Gathering (10 Wood), otherwise that Gathering Hut you placed down first will move a lot slower. You can assign people to work directly on the various resource piles until the night of Day 3/morning of Day 4, when the temperature drops - it's when the temperature drops that the Gathering Huts will become more useful. The 1st Law you should pass would be to have children work (but never "all jobs") as they are wonderful to have collecting from the piles and gathering huts initially, and then I usually put them to work in the Cookhouse(s).
    Secondly, as long as you build 8 tents (80 Wood) by the end of the 1st day, you won't even need to turn on the generator. Technically, you can leave the generator off until the temperature drops on Night 3/Day 4 - though you'll still get pop-ups saying the generator is still off and people are afraid they'll freeze, but you'll find that all the tents still show "livable." You'll also want to build a Medical Post (25 Wood) + a Cookhouse (20 Wood) + a Hunters' Hut (20 Wood) by the end of Day 2. Research: Hunters' Gear, Sawmill, Coal Thumper, Steelworks, Heaters & Steam Hub. Laws: Emergency Shift (can only use this once without penalty, so you'd better make sure), Extended Shift (use sparingly in Workshops and/or Coal resources), Radical Treatment & Soup (only use this once or twice as people will starve and eventually die)
    Build any remaining Gathering Huts by the end of Day 3 and pull everyone off outside piles and place them in a Gathering Hut or other indoor workplace that has heat. You can place a few Steam Hubs near the Gathering Huts, but if you've got Heaters researched, this won't be necessary. If you haven't turned on the Generator by now, you absolutely need to turn it on as you should have more than enough Coal by now (and might have even needed to build a Resource Depot). Research: Beacon (make sure you have 5 workers available), Drawing Boards, Generator Range/Power, Bunkhouse, Sawmill Upgrade, Healthcare Insulation & Resource Depot upgrade. Laws: (any of the above if they're not finished), Cemetery, Care House & Prosthetics
    Wall Drill: eventually you'll get rid of the Sawmill as the Wall Drill brings in more wood, but in the early game, it's still best to use the Sawmill - the Wall Drill also uses a Steam Core, which you only have 1 in the early game - save this research for Day 5 - 7
    Scouts: Send them to the Weather Station and/or Large Convoy first as this will lead to the Steel Bridge, where you'll find a free Automaton. However, do not continue to Winterhome until after Day 15 as it will trigger the event before then and you'll need that time to gather as many resources as possible and keep your Hope as high as possible. Also, when it comes time for Order vs. Faith - always choose Faith as people tend to feel more threatened by Order and more at peace with Faith. I've never won a scenario where I chose Order, though I have seen others be successful. However, those successful ones were all filmed 2 years ago when the game came out and since there have been so many updates since then, I'm giving my opinion about playing over the past 2 months

    • @BenchwarmerWoW
      @BenchwarmerWoW  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Remember there are MANY ways you can get to end game, this is just one of those guides. I agree with faith however I have found recently that there is opportunity late game for order to work out even better, it only works with a large number of workers available and it requires good planning, check out a recent full play through I did of "A New Home" Order play through if you want some tips on how to do it :) Thank you for your comment!

    These tips aren't bad, but I disagree with a few.
    The two most important resources in this game are people and research. Obviously, yes, keep people alive. But the real key to doing that is getting your research going ASAP. I usually do that by using my starting resources on a pair of workshops immediately and not assigning the engineers to resources specifically to build the workshops faster, since people who are not gathering will do any building tasks that need to be done. Once those are done, my first research is always Faster Gathering, as its benefit is really only good at the beginning of the game. Following that up with a Beacon to get more people plus the automaton at the Deserted Bridge is the way to go, IMHO.
    This wasn't really touched on in the video, but the very first thing that should be done before unpausing the game is to sign a law. The reason being is to get it on cooldown ASAP so you can pass as many as you can and get access to key buildings and abilities sooner rather than later. Waiting until Day 2 or 3 to pass your first law is flat-out bad gameplay/advice. I always go with Emergency Shift first, because people will not die from overwork if they're assigned directly to a resource pile whether it be coal, word, or steel, and once the temperature drops, it's too cold to assign people directly without massively inflating your number of sick people, so it's the beginning of the game to do this, or never. While I'm on that subject, treat Discontent like a resource to be spent. First day, you should pass Emergency Shift, then get three of those on wood piles immediately. This will easily give you MORE than enough wood for the first eight tents, cookhouse, medical post, etc, with leftovers for researching Drawing Boards (Level 2 tech tree) and have wood for scout teams in the first 24 hours. That Discontent goes away soon after the shifts end, or people will ask you to end them and not use Emergency Shift for 2-3 days, which is fine because after that point you don't need them any more.
    Like with research, getting a beacon up ASAP is more crucial than waiting as demonstrated here, which surprises me since you put emphasis on Steam Cores, as scout teams will be your only means of getting them early on. More importantly you'll get more people, which will be needed for Hunter's Huts specifically because of their huge drain on manpower early game. The more people you have, the more resources you can get, along with, guess what, research.
    Another fun fact; you can use the Generator's overdrive ability at no additional coal cost, so at around 8:00 pm (2000 hours) is the optimal time to turn that on. It will keep people from getting sick while the tents are being built. Another tip in this same vein; if you have construction that is going on past 9:00 pm (2100 hours), pause it until 5:00 am (0500 hours). People tend to get sick if they're out building throughout the night. Also in that same vein, it's more useful to pass the Corpse Disposal law, then the Organ Transplants law to get a 20% faster heal rate, which also still counts even if no one has died (I'm aware this may have been talked about in the next video on laws, but I'm gonna mention it anyway).
    Something to keep in mind about Automatons is that they start with only a 60% efficiency rating, so beginning of the game most people will be better off with the extra cores and steel, since the latter is also a significant bottleneck in terms of resources. Those extra cores could mean an additional coal mine, hothouse, wall drill, or an early infirmary which could make a big difference. Or if people hold onto those cores for a while, they could basically turn that first Automaton into two, since building one from scratch only costs a single core (Plus the 100 wood, 100 steel, and 50 coal). Another useful thing not mentioned is that you can always get your Steam Cores back by dismantling the buildings or Automatons that use them.
    Not a bad video, but again, some things I disagree with or thought could have been mentioned in addition.

    I just finished New Home on survivor. My start was emergency shifts on two wood piles and one coal pile (using workers). No one dies if you use it on the piles but they will die if they're in a building. Put the rest on steel/ more wood. Built two med posts (a necessity on survivor as people get sick super quickly) and two workshops. Assigned engineers to fill both med posts and the workshop. But come morning fill both workshops and spread the remaining 5 between the two med posts. I first researched heaters, as in survivor the temp drops super quickly. The beacon next. Built a few gathering posts. By the start of the morning shift the workers on the emergency shifts have cleared their piles out. Then they go on the gathering posts and you can start setting up hunter huts. You'll have a heap of wood to build all the tents and basic infrastructure. Next get child shelters (which goes to them being engineer assistants) and so on.
    Really, the best way to learn is just watch an expert player do a run. That's how I figured things out. :)

    I would like to say that you can do both research and resources at the same time if you manage your first day right. The first thing to do is build a workshop and research faster gathering and if you do it fast enough you can unlock it on the first day. Then put your gathering post on 24 hour shift when the day ends and do beacon next. The night should consist of getting more gathering/medical posts ready and building tents After that, you're settled. It can be done and its the most effective start i know.

    • @BenchwarmerWoW

    • @David-Rymer
      @David-Rymer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BenchwarmerWoW in that case let me add the following: day 2 starts with getting a cookhouse and hunters hut ready so you get food going on day 2. The rest of the resources should go to the construction of the beacon and if everything goes as planned, then you should have scouts out by the middle of the night. If you dont have enough wood, then the cookhouse is optional and a luxury on day 2. I mostly research better gear after the beacon to maximise food production, because god knows you need it.
      (The beacon has priority over food)

    I dont agree with how you started. The book of law is litteraly the first thing you do since its on a timer, you wasted two days meaning you delay your laws.
    Same with the workshop you can just straight build two workshops and send people on foot to collect the wood needed for houses.
    This way you already got one tech unlock on the second day.
    15 days you get before the story progresses by itself, its a good idea to max as much as you can quickly

  • @robosuit
    @robosuit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Another tip: Don't bother turning on the Generator until the first time the temperature drops. Don't worry if people are working in chilly areas. The risk of illness is low enough to not be an issue, and buildings/tents at this point will be livable with their insulation. Heck, don't even bother collecting any coal until you are about to turn the generator on for the first time. Build up a good stockpile of wood and steel, start researching, and don't stop passing laws. Extended shifts, Medical Apprentices, and Soup are three high priority laws early-game.

    • @BenchwarmerWoW
      @BenchwarmerWoW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually don't do the generator until night but I didn't think about not collecting coal, it would allow more wood and steel to be salvaged! Great advice! I usually go engineer apprentices because I go down the faith tree and once the late game comes along, I have enough unused workers to fill them into house of healing's. For soup I would go moonshine first so it lowers the amount of discontent you get from drinking the soup, once moonshine is passed then go to soup. I found that helps a load more when dealing with the Londoners for example :)

    • @robosuit
      @robosuit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BenchwarmerWoW Hmm I always do soup first, and very early, before I even make my first cookhouse. Gotta get that first 100 rations to stretch as far as possible, and the discontent rise should be negligible by the time you get moonshine afterwards. I am an order player, so maybe that's why I've always preferred medic apprentices. That, and those three waves of sick people always freaks me out and I just want them out of my medical tents as fast as possible. Either choice, for apprentices and moonshine, will both be fine in the end thankfully /thumbsup

    I disagree with a few things here.
    Coal is not actually that much of a priority. It is a priorityon day 3 to prepare for day 4 and onward. But the first 2 days can be used to only collect wood and steel.
    I believe that insulation is far more important than getting more heat. That is why tents and bunkhouses, and then improved versions of worksites are more important than coal generation.
    You can simply never turn on the generator until day 4 or so. A simple hospital tent or two will do just fine until it actually starts to get cold.
    I do agree you shouldn't rush the Beacon, but you still kind of should. The faster you can get to the automaton the better. Research is very important to fix the issues that will show up. You should for that reason try to have 8 workshops and get more engineers as soon as possible. This is also a reason you want the Beacon up fast. More workshops means faster research.
    I do agree that you shouldn't focus on buildig mines and stuff. Coal Mines are a noob trap. People think they are good but not as good as a coal thumper. The main reason for coal mines is for automatons as they can work 24/7 and that requires at least 2 automatons with a coal thumper.
    The buildings you should focus on however are the infirmary. That building is just OP.

    I disagree about not researching beacon early. Faster gathering first and next should be beacon. Put 4 workshops and you'll research faster. Then send out your scouts to get more people then you could quickly add other buildings to go with the demand. Also quickly research another scout team so you can send two.. so they can scout more places until you've discovered places with resources. Then you can build outpost so if you're short of anything you can get some sent to you daily. I always prioritize the food (fishing) so even if my hunters could barely hunt, 100 raw food still get sent everyday. Also I always choose to dump bodies in snow pit. You can use the bodies later for other useful things like fertilizing hothouse and organ transplant to heal the sick (so some death can be a good thing). If you choose cemetery, workers will be off work for hours so if you have lots of death going on, this will be a major problem and work halted/slowed down. Later on, I always stick with religion faith path because it's way easier to bring down discontent and raise hope later on. One of my games ended with almost 500 population with no sickness, no death medical are complete and running, and all resources, raw food and rations overloaded where I have to keep adding large resource depot, almost no discontent and almost full hope. Also long before the storm even came I've already researched everything there is to research. Going through the cold storm was easy by then. This is what worked for me.

    • @mancamiatipoola
      @mancamiatipoola ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you probably played on easy. I started on normal (medium) as i do all my games and i had 2 full medical posts and 15 more sick people because i didnt research faster gathering and my people went in the snow to gather even at -40. I just didnt know they would get sick while working on resource piles XD.
      Another thing the game doesn't tell you is that when you enact the soup law, the cookhouse automatically selects that food and you will get a lot of discontent from food. I didnt realise that for a long time and one day i moused over the discontent and it said "bad food". When i figured out the soup fiasco i face palmed hard.
      Just some things that happen on your first play i guess. But the best thing about this game is that it is also a rogue-lite game and encourages you to start over and do things better if you fuck up too badly.

    I like your tips about the early start and gathering posts. Some good info there.
    However i disagree about child labour law. That is indeed subjective, but in my opinion, going the route of child shelter then gives you the apprentice program law which gives you the option to have kids help out in research or in medical buildings. Best option is to create engineer apprenticeship because that will give you a flat 20% research speed increase! This is SO much better than having a few kids as workers in the long run. I dont have to tell you all how important faster research IS!
    Secondly you DONT need steam hubs so early in the game. Steam hubs burn a LOT of coal. You are better off researching heaters in order to save on coal and heaters will give you functional buildings even in -40 temp with low health risk. You should research steam hubs later on when you already have at least 1-2 coal producing facilities up and running at full steam (coal mine / coal thumper). Steam hubs are ideal after you set up your major resource producing plants (steel mills, saw mills, coal mines) and not before. However you will deal with a few more sick people.
    My last tip is to ALWAYS research the better houses first when you unlock a new research tier because you will get an event that requires you to provide the next tier of homes which will give you a large boost in hope if succeeded.
    You dont have to research everything from every tier. In my first playthrough i was always behind on research because i made this mistake and then when the housing event came up i failed it and lost a lot of hope.
    SPOILER: make sure you research the tier 3 home upgrade before you send a scout team to Winterhome!

    The logic behind the people in the community is unbelievable. Its totally understandable that a few people might complain out of 80. But then why would it affects the entire community if its some guy in his tent talking about the conditions before he goes to work? Sickness alwasy seems to get me, with 5 medical facilities, for some reason, the doctors decide to stay home. Uhhh? Theres 30+ sick people and you're staying home? Maybe later, but I wish you could set individuals to 24 hour shifts. Also by the time it gets down to ~80F, those steam posts and overdrive don't do anything? How would you even allocate the time, research and resources to get to those higher ranks to then allocate more resources and time to research the gen upgrades, and then more resources and time to build them, all whilst having to use all three on sustaining life too? Thats if they even want to do all of that. On my 3rd or 4th run, if they get too complainy and decide not to work, ill started letting the resources drain. Lets see who complains when there's NO generator to heat them up after they decide to leave the town. Literal idiots, im trying to save them. If they cant see the plan 5 days into the future then there's no hope, oh but wait, they can only see that far for things THEY want. 🙄
