  • --HUGE HAPPY HIPPO NEWS ALERT-- The girls are home!
The sounds of hippo ‘laughs’ are once again echoing from the side of Cheyenne Mountain. Zambezi (zam-BEE-zee) and Kasai (kuh-SIGH), CMZoo’s Nile hippo sisters, are back home at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo! We're happy to report they are happy and healthy in their brand-new exhibit.
The two female hippos have been ‘vacationing’ at Dickerson Park Zoo, an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo in Springfield, Missouri, since October 2016, when construction began on Water’s Edge: Africa. Zambezi, 27, originally came to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in 1993. Kasai, 20, originally came to CMZoo in 2001. Given their long-time residence and personable demeanors, the girls are well-loved by staff, the community and CMZoo fans all around the world.
“The question of the year has definitely been, ‘When are the hippos coming back?’ We’re just so happy the girls are finally home,” said Patty Wallace, senior lead keeper at Water’s Edge: Africa, the new home for hippos, penguins, warthogs, lemurs and more, at CMZoo. “There were a lot of happy human tears and a lot of wiggling hippo ears on Friday morning, as we watched them explore their new home. It’s so fulfilling to see them enjoying this beautiful space and settling back in. We missed them!”
Under current restrictions, the Zoo is temporarily closed to the public until further notice. But, when the Zoo is allowed to reopen, guests will be able to see the girls from one-of-a-kind perspectives, like the Water’s Edge: Africa giant rope bridge that hangs 8 feet above the outdoor hippo yard.
The hippos’ 750-mile journey home wasn’t your average road trip. Learn more about their trip and how they're settling into their new home at: conta.cc/2XsQyc8

That made me cry to see how happy the keepers were to see their hippos. And well done on the move, hippos are famous for being suspicious of anything new, yet these girls seemed to feel at home quite quickly. Good job all around! Thanks very much for sharing this with us.

At 1:33 and 2:52 is RELIEF, meaning water at last. These are two beautiful hippos and so glad they will live a great sheltered life where they will be loved (and yes they give that back too as their demeanor is not like wild hippos at all)
One of my best experiences is feeding a hippo a watermelon or whatever is on the menu. The keepers are so lucky to have such a job they have caring for them.

Glad to see Cheyenne mountain zoo continue to get better. I first visited the zoo as a 4 year old child when my parents took me there as a little boy. Even then animals had large roomy enclosures. Giraffes and elephants had huge outdoor pens they were encouraged to use during the day. The great apes had huge areas that allowed them to climb. If the hippo enclosure looks this good now it makes me wonder what the rest of the zoo looks like now.

those are two happy hippo's which is great to see ! ... remember to be careful around them, hippo's can get a little testy with other creatures including people, i.e. they are nice but they can be dangerous - be a little careful around them.

Good question, Claudia! They're transported in dry crates, but the team stops every two hours to check on them to see if they need anything.

I have a quick question please. I'm unfamiliar with this story so I was wondering if they had to move because their new habit was being built on the same site? Just curious, thanks in advance to anyone who wouldn't mind answering. 🦛🦛💜

Hi! Yes, Water's Edge: Africa was built on the same site as the former hippo house.

@@CheyenneMtnZoo Keeping in mind how big the zoo appeared when I was 4 years old back in 1963, did the hippos have a comparable volume of water to swim in then? I do remember a hippo immersing itself fully in the pool provided to them then. As I'm 64 now I doubt that the hippo I saw is alive now. I was impressed by what I saw of the enclosures compared to other zoos. Perhaps the girls are great grandchildren of the hippo I saw then.
