Bailey's Baby's First Day in the Big Yard

- Our little giraffe calf explored with the big yard for the first time this morning with several members of the herd! She enjoyed the sunshine, stretched those legs with some major zoomies, investigated some of the guineafowl and was met with enthusiasm from staff, guests and giraffe alike. So far, she has met Ohe, Mashama, Msichana, Panya, Laikipia, Twiga, Msitu and Muziki. Today, she was outside with her mom, Bailey, and Ohe, Mashama, Msichana, Laikipia, Twiga, Msitu and Muziki.
She'll continue exploring the big yard as weather allows and will meet more members of the herd as she grows up. These excursions won't be scheduled, but guests should be able to see her on a regular basis outside with the herd and inside the barn. Speaking of the barn, it's nearly time to turn off the temporary birth cam. On the calf's 3-week birthday on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, we will turn it off permanently at 4:45 p.m. Enjoy the birth cam until then. After that, you should be able to see her more and more on our year-round outdoor cams, available daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. MT.

I took a date to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in 1985 and, while we were viewing the giraffes, a zookeeper decided to give the two of us a special treat by taking us to one of the non-public enclosures where they had a week-old giraffe calf temporarily separated from its mom. We got to go in and pet it (I don't recall if it was a male or female). It was only about my height, and while it was a bit shy, it was very curious about us. We ended up getting to scratch and pet the little one for a couple of minutes. Definitely the highlight of our zoo expedition! The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has the biggest giraffe herd in North America and does a great job with them.

The zoo waits 30 days before naming the babies .. so we have a couple more weeks to wait for the announcement

This particular calf is named BB (short for Bailey's Baby), and she was born Sept. 28, 2020. BB moved to Denver Zoo last summer as part of a Species Survival Plan recommendation. Bailey has since had a second calf named Wednesday, born Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022.
