actually we bengalis say "Dada" only. The taxi driver said Saurav Ganguly because Saurav Ganguly is a cricketer in India and he is from kolkata and we say him "Dada" as a mark of respect. so Chris and Max you can greet any male guy as "Dada" and Female as "Didi". and yes don't forget to add "Dhannabad" 😅

Kolkata is the "old guard" of India. People are nice and chill, and can be compared to other laid back, historical cities like Seville, Marseille and St. Petersburg.
Agreed, and ironically, it's the newest "old" city in India... created by the Brits as a reflection of London. When I was in London, I was bowled over by how much it reminded me of my city of birth -- Kolkata.

Hey Chris, the yellow colour taxi's in Kolkata city are all Ambassador cars which were manufactured by Kolkata based Hindustan Motors. They shut down the production of Ambassador cars in 2014. Ambassador cars running as Taxi's in Kolkata are in their end of life as they don't meet the pollution emmision norms. So in a few years all Ambassador cars will vanish from Kolkata streets...

Kolkata lost its charm, this city stucks in somewhere year 2000. Pune, ahmedabad are more developed than kolkata, now it is comparable to lucknow, patna or any tier 2 city. I personally don't like kolkata

I was born and raised in Kolkata so good to see my city through your lens. Here in general there are several beautiful places in the city to go for in a day trip or a 2 day trip. Must visits, Vidyasagar setu, Princep ghat, national library, national museum, boat ride on ganges from near princep ghat area to howrah bridge, tibetan breakfast at tiretti bazar (poddar court), walk in the park street area explore cafes( flurys must try). Biryani_Arsalan Park circus 7 point musttry. Walk through Kumartuli artisans district, Birla temple, Birla planetarium, Victoria memorial, Dakshineshwar temple and Belur Math by ferry, College street bookwalk and coffeehouse..you'll love it! Enjoy the summer🎉 but be careful with the crowd and traffic! Greetings from Germany❤

Here are a few things you should keep in mind:
* Public transport network of Kolkata is great, economic. You'll get busses, Autos to almost any corner of the city from almost anywhere....so no need to take expensive taxi rides (likes this one)
* We address strangers on the street as 'Dada' (means elder brother, the female noun is 'Didi' or elder sister). Sourav Ganguly (the cricketer) is from Kolkata and he is reknowned as 'Dada'
* You are in a Historic city, the British capital of India. Hence, you'll find some parts of the city is still stuck in their 50's heritage
* Truth is, the city is still somewhat economically backward than some other states of India. So, you'll need to adjust with certain 'shortcomings'. Don't worry it's not too bad though, there is still a modern (and luxurious) Kolkata you can enjoy
* 'Nomoshkar' is the Bengali version of 'Namaskar' or 'Namaste'. 'DhannoBaad' is the Bengali version of 'Dhanyavaad'

If you are in these type of situation where you need the Internet urgently. You can just ask anyone for hotspot. Probably the can driver could have helped. Another thing is that you could turn on international roaming on your native sim card. That will be a little expensive but it will serve the purpose for urgent situations as you guys travel so much.

At the Kolkata airport you can either book for a taxi or bus ,after the arrival you can check outside there will be a ticket counter, if you do not prefer a Uber. and if you take any taxi please try to bargain the price, otherwise they will quote extravagant price. Stay safe and enjoy your stay in India.

You can place your own fare based on standard rates, and only choose the ride that offers the closest to that amount.
3. OLA:
Well-recognized in the city like UBER.
Mostly has excessive surge prices.
Choose this only if all other options are nil.
For 2-wheelers -
1. InDrive:
The same benefits and points like the ones you read above.
Bikers don't ask for extra money as the ride is determined only based on what both parties agree upon.
2. UBER:
The same points like UBER Cabs, but, most bikers will ask for more amount than what the app says.
It is because of rising petrol prices, and the company's policies, but it is annoying for us locals.
3. Rapido:
Same stuff. Most bikers will ask for more money than what's showed as the fare on the apps. Same reason like above.

Prepaid taxi from Kolkata airport to Hindustan park is around 400 because I took it two weeks ago on this exact destination. Even Uber should be around 500-600. Just goes to show not even the masters are safe in India because he thought it was a fair price and still tipped him. 😂😂
400? Did you add the parking fee?600-700 is from the outside of airport, inside airport add 150-200 rupees extra for parking.
