I know this video will attract controversy, so here's my view. I did not go looking to film anything controversial. I did not purposely try to film and "expose" these ladies. Upon realizing what was happening, I turned the camera towards myself, and made an effort to not film them. They made the choice to come towards the car and be aggressive, rude, and act like they own the place. If you do not work in public safety, such as with the police, you don't have the right to block someone's car from moving, open the car door, ask to examine personal property, and demand footage be deleted. Yes, I did say I wasn't filming as the situation began to escalate and I didn't want my camera stolen. It's not good to lie, but there's also a time and place where it's safer. I also kept the camera running for personal safety in case we were questioned by the police in case anything happened. I never made an effort to turn the camera toward them and expose them. Everything that was caught on camera was a result of their own choice to not let me carry on with my own personal business, which had nothing to do with them in the first place. This is why I chose not to edit anything out. Now I have made sure to avoid this area to avoid more problems, and continue having a great time in India doing what I love the most - meeting friendly people and eating great food. Those women are prostitutes. Their family or neighbours probably doesn't know they work like this, that's why they got angry thinking you'll expose their identity. Avoid these type of red light areas. Also avoid some transgender women who asks for money in the road. If you can give them 10-20 rupess, if you don't give them money, they get very abusive.
You have done nothing wrong. First of all I am from Kolkata and I love my city. I live in Germany to earn my livilihood, because the economic situation of Kolkata is not good and I do not want to live in other parts of India. But still I love Kolkata dearly. But having said that every place has good or bad, what you did was not wrong.. even if you had taken picture/video of those ladies it was not wrong. What they are demanding is wrong. They are saying that their families do not know that they are in that profession. That is their problem, not yours. Its a public road. These are all scams to scare people and get money from them. Do not get afraid. Always remember you are a foreign nationality. If you ever get into any problem directly call the police. The police may be corrupt but they would think twice before screwing with a foreigner. But honestly the taxi driver was also an asshole. Behaving over friendly and pushing you into trouble. Hey Chris, I live in Kolkata and I have only heard of Sonagachi. It is basically a red-line area in Kolkata, the taxi driver tried explaining but he could not. I am really scared of situations like these but you handled it gently. The taxi driver thought that it is better to make tourists aware of these areas so you guys do not end up in a crazy-weird situations. Unfortunately, you guys did. But now you know about it, and many other tourists and citizens(like me) will know and avoid it. Come Kolkata again, in Puja month especially. DONT FORGET TO BRING MAXXXXXX❤
The taxi driver has a pervert mindset and that's why he kept on insisting about Sonagachi and intentionally slowed his vehicle speed there, and you go anywhere in the world those who sell their body doesn't want them to be filmed, after privacy is subjective.

The taxi driver did not do a great job here , because he kept on talking about the place and slows down and stops infront , thats giving them attention, yes they do loot you after putting u at wrong for doing nothing. There are many red light areas, just do Google search about any city in that aspect and avoid going to those areas. As many of them are on road sides, please avoid stopping or using camera in those places. Have heard a lot of instances like this and you can find lot of videos on TH-cam itself on situations and loots like this. Be safe...
Guys, you are tourists from another country. Contrary to what some are saying that police won't be able to help you, the reality is, the Police will definitely and especially help you guys coz you are tourists from another country. Tourism brings it's economy. On top of that you guys did not break any rules. You were inside your taxi and you were on a public road. IF you guys were inside the red light district , i.e walking in it's lanes and filming, only then it would've been trouble. Very entertaining video, btw. Good work. :)

Better do not to venture into these areas as these are infamous areas known for their own reasons. I am really ashamed of the incident, nevertheless keep your videos coming. In India we revere visitors and try to hold them in high esteem. One wise thing that you did was not to take the rickshaw ride as it could have been catastrophic. The taxi driver was too adventurous and he knew how dangerous that area was, couldn’t understand why he stopped there. There are pockets of problematic areas that you need to avoid. your taxi driver was a bit creepy, its because of him the problem arose, he was trying you to first try the hand pulling rickshaw, then he himself said that there are these kind of business going on here and from my understanding he thought that you may try this, this area is pretty infamous for filming. It is the reality of that place but your taxi driver must not have slowed down there to make things worse, in the end he got you out of trouble but he himself was responsible for the situation. Yes he wasn't purposefully filming them, he accidentally filmed them;but when the ladies apprehended him he should have erased their clip knowing about them, as they were narrating everything to him. He should've blurred their faces or just removed the clip.

Taxi driver was super dumb. Insisting for Rickshaw ride even when Chris politely refused. Not only went to them but infact stopped near those rabid sex workers and let them put on a show. In the end, he didn't even know exactly where they were supposed to be dropped. Glad Chris still make out of it all fine and with no loss of footage.

Some commenters are saying Chris filmed the ladies - as though on purpose - when it's very clear from the footage that he wasn't deliberately filming the ladies. His camera was facing forwards all the time, filming the driver and the view ahead. Never once did Chris turn the camera towards the ladies. But when the driver stopped and the ladies approached the taxi and starting banging on the taxi, accusing him of filming them, Chris immediately turned the camera towards himself. If the driver hadn't stopped his vehicle, and the ladies had not approached the taxi, their faces most likely would not have appeared in the footage.
Everything you said makes sense.. but the issue here is that Chris didn't blur their faces out, they probably mistakenly walked into view of the camera and they made it clear they did not want to be shown. Quite simply Chris had a choice to edit the footage in any number of ways but chose not to putting their families at risk. All could have been avoided by simple blur edit but he messed up sorry.
Listen Chris, this taxi drive was an oversmart ass, his conversation and everything showed that he had a mixed emotion for prostitutes and took you guys forcefully to red light area SonaGachi (one of the oldest red light area in asia i think). He took you there with his ego and pissed his pants instantly when got confronted by the prostitutes, tbh i dont even blame them, its same all over the world when it comes to cameras in red light areas. Hey Chris, I live in Kolkata and I have only heard of Sonagachi. It is basically a red-line area in Kolkata, the taxi driver tried explaining but he could not. I am really scared of situations like these but you handled it gently. The taxi driver thought that it is better to make tourists aware of these areas so you guys do not end up in a crazy-weird situations. Unfortunately, you guys did. But now you know about it, and many other tourists and citizens(like me) will know and avoid it. Come Kolkata again, in Puja month especially. DONT FORGET TO BRING MAXXXXXX❤

You both really handled yourself so calmly... Just an advice, whenever you to any area, do not ask the taxi drivers to stop at random places. There are many red light areas, just do Google search about any city in that aspect and avoid going to those areas. As many of them are on road sides, please avoid stopping or using camera in those places. Have heard a lot of instances like this and you can find lot of videos on TH-cam itself on situations and loots like this. Be safe...
Guys, you are tourists from another country. Contrary to what some are saying that police won't be able to help you, the reality is, the Police will definitely and especially help you guys coz you are tourists from another country. Tourism brings it's economy. On top of that you guys did not break any rules. You were inside your taxi and you were on a public road. IF you guys were inside the red light district , i.e walking in it's lanes and filming, only then it would've been trouble.

Better do not to venture into these areas as these are infamous areas known for their own reasons. I am really ashamed of the incident, nevertheless keep your videos coming. In India we revere visitors and try to hold them in high esteem. One wise thing that you did was not to take the rickshaw ride as it could have been catastrophic. The taxi driver was too adventurous and he knew how dangerous that area was, couldn’t understand why he stopped there. There are pockets of problematic areas that you need to avoid. Keep touring, just love your videos.

your taxi driver was a bit creepy, its because of him the problem arose, he was trying you to first try the hand pulling rickshaw, then he himself said that there are these kind of business going on here and from my understanding he thought that you may try this, this area is pretty infamous for filming. It is the reality of that place but your taxi driver must not have slowed down there to make things worse, in the end he got you out of trouble but he himself was responsible for the situation. Taxi driver was super dumb. Insisting for Rickshaw ride even when Chris politely refused. Not only went to them but infact stopped near those rabid sex workers and let them put on a show. In the end, he didn't even know exactly where they were supposed to be dropped. Glad Chris still make out of it all fine and with no loss of footage.

Some commenters are saying Chris filmed the ladies - as though on purpose - when it's very clear from the footage that he wasn't deliberately filming the ladies. His camera was facing forwards all the time, filming the driver and the view ahead.
Never once did Chris turn the camera towards the ladies. But when the driver stopped and the ladies approached the taxi and starting banging on the taxi, accusing him of filming them, Chris immediately turned the camera towards himself.
If the driver hadn't stopped his vehicle, and the ladies had not approached the taxi, their faces most likely would not have appeared in the footage.
Everything you said makes sense.. but the issue here is that Chris didn't blur their faces out, they probably mistakenly walked into view of the camera and they made it clear they did not want to be shown. Quite simply Chris had a choice to edit the footage in any number of ways but chose not to putting their families at risk. All could have been avoided by simple blur edit but he messed up sorry.

Listen Chris, this taxi drive was an oversmart ass, his conversation and everything showed that he had a mixed emotion for prostitutes and took you guys forcefully to red light area SonaGachi (one of the oldest red light area in asia i think).
