I loved when Jerry Garcia played this with the Jerry Garcia Band in the 70’s and I want to learn how to play it too. Love your lessons and wish had the money to get your tabs and stuff. But I am so poor I cant afford to. Much respect!
Thanks for the comment buddy, I really dig that version too! No worries about the lesson materials.. at least you get the full video lesson for free here on TH-cam. Something I never had growing up! 😉🎉
Old school is the way to go Alex! Even the camera angles. I know you’re always aiming for improvement, but that’s very hard since you knocked it out of the park from the get go. Love this one! Take care maestro.
Terrific timing, Alex. We played this tune yesterday at our Friday jam session. Great tune, but none of us were statisfied with our playing, so it's on the set list for next Friday.
so glad I came across your channel Alex. Love your content. Just working my way through your lessons and learning so much! Will be getting in contact with some 1 to 1 lessons in the very near future :)
Alex, great standard choice -- a long-term favourite of mine. Your voice-leading and bass movement are always so inspiring. The various voicings you use make such a difference, as they shade the emotional tone in the same way that synonyms do in spoken language. All these details matter, and I love that you stress that. ... Doesn't hurt that you've got monster chops in a ton of styles, either.
Ah thank you so much my friend! Really glad you dig my chord choices on this one! There’s always so many directions you can take these pieces in.. sometimes it takes me a while to focus on a particular path and keep things tidy and not too sprawling! 🤪
I've loved this as a hot jazz/swing tune ever since hearing the incomparable Oscar Aleman's take. Thanks for putting this together Alex! (Anyone who hasn't heard Oscar - stop everthing NOW and get ready to have your world turned upside-down)
Hi there, I love this song and your arrangement of it. I've been playing the Garcia version for ages and it's really interesting to analyse the differences and similarities. I can't really afford the commitment to Patreon but I thought I would buy this individual lesson. But, I don't if you know, it says on the web page that it's £5.99 but when you click to buy that £5.99 is translated to dollars, then it adds VAT so the price comes out as £7.19. Is that correct?
Thanks buddy, glad you enjoyed it! I really like the Garcia version too.. so many good takes on this old classic! Ah yes, I guess Gumroad add whatever tax/VAT is required to stay in the laws of the country of the customer purchasing. Also, some of these places will add extra charge for purchases on Apple iOS as opposed to other systems etc. All very confusing.. but, I must say, still a massive bargain for the amount of content I provide in my lessons!.. and the support is much appreciated.. I wouldn’t be able to do this otherwise. Each video takes a good 12 hours of work minimum just on the audio and video editing front alone, and typing my own transcriptions out from scratch.. never mind having spent an entire lifetime gaining this knowledge and understanding how to present it and teach it effectively and the other laundry list of things that have to be done each week to make these lessons possible 🙏🏻🧡
Here we are again... Alex, did you check about Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones guitar player? (I told you about him some weeks ago...) btw: first version I have of Russian Lullaby is by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra from 1938
Hey buddy! I did check him out.. great vibe and solid grooves. Very cool stuff! 👌🏻😎 Ah yes, the Benny Goodman version of this tune is great too! My arrangement takes more of a nod to the Oscar Aleman version 😉
Can I ask why you sometimes choose a 'jazz' fingering of dominant 7 chords, first finger on the 7, middle finger on the 3rd and then ring finger on the 5th and grabbing the root with the thumb and yet sometimes you use bar with a more 'rock' fingering for the same chord. I'm getting used to that 'jazz' fingering but I've yet to think there's an advantage to it since my pinkie is available in both for additions and ornamentations?
@@RobData good question.. most of it is down to effectively muting the 2 unwanted strings so that your strumming tone has the right “la pompe” texture. Also, sometimes it’s down to keeping the hand position/wrist posture consistent through quick changes. As always, it’s a “horses for courses” deal and you’ll see me use every possible grip, including regular barre chords when the moment is right. The more you play this stuff the more your intuition grows on those details 👍🏻
was looking at loar today and guild T 50 - (and aristocrat )ar e p90s better for your jazz tone or do you prefer humbuckers? - im so confused . Dangelico have some guitars in sale - Altlantic solid with split coils and bedfofd with two p90s - solid also - hard to source a slimline hollowboady like your loar - with single dog eared p90
Hey buddy, the guitar I’m using is a full thickness vintage Gibson es125 archtop from 1953. I know that Loar did make a similar guitar, but like you said, it was a thinline model. I love the P90 and Humbuckers equally, and they have different strengths but if I was pushed to choose just one, I’d go with the humbuckers as they’ll obviously give you a nice silent and clean signal 👌🏻
Hoping you can comment more about the format of your Patreon courses, and what technology one would need to optimize? Is it a matter of printing a PDF of your lesson and then following your TH-cam video? Thanks
Scott, the lesson materials that you receive through my Patreon are vast. You get PDF tabs and notations, including chord boxes.. for all guitar parts. You also get "guitar pro" files where I embed my audio into the transcript which makes for truly interactive sheet music. And I provide my recordings and home made backing tracks. Also I provide many extras, like triads, arpeggio and scale road-maps etc. You'll never find anything else like it mate, not for such a small monthly cost.
The Patreon format is extremely frustrating. I subscribed tonight but can’t access PDFs of your past lessons. I’m sure it’s my user error but will cancel. Too bad, really like your content
That's a shame Scott, and definitely user error I'm afraid as I have well over 1000 extremely happy Patreon members on there and it's a bustling community! You could've dropped me an email and I've had figured out the issue for you on the spot.. never mind!

That's so cool Eric! Great timing indeed! Hope you enjoy it!
Brilliant! As always…love those line cliches and chromatic movement. So idiosyncratic of this old playing.
Thanks mate, indeed.. so many little movements that just scream “1930’s”!
Great version of this tune on the first Garcia/Grisman album with David Grisman playing gypsy style mandolin.
Love the content man thank you!
@@joeshoe6184 thanks buddy! Indeed!.. I’m a big fan of that version too, super cool. The Vic Dickenson version is ace too 👌🏻
@AlexFarranGuitar thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out
@@AlexFarranGuitar that is a tastey version! I've always loved brass, the trombone in particular. Nice work on the piano as well.

Another fabulous lesson. I particularly like the chords portion. what strings do you use on your arch top guitars?
Make sure to check out the “tone talk” section of the video.. I speak about strings for my archtops there 👍🏻
