Yeah it’s hard to describe to a younger person how absolutely shocking this was. Especially if you’d been following the franchise for a while. It’s like if a Mission Impossible trailer came out and at the end Tom Cruise said “finally my most impossible mission” and stuck a pistol in his mouth.
I was in high school and had been following this franchise since I was much younger. It was a definite mood setter watching it. Then also having to wait for another two years.
5:56 This is what this game should've been more about: Snake fighting Gekkos (the more mobile offspring of Meta Gear REX). It would've given more weight to the "War has changed" motif. Instead, we got to see very little of the Gekkos and only in Shadow Moses. I was seriously hoping the game was going to be more about Gekkos suddenly and randomly bursting through walls in Baghdad (let's face it, that's where the early part takes place: the 2nd Gulf War was still a fresh memory) rather than just facing PMC soldiers who were no more threatening than Volgin's soldiers in MGS3.

17 years later, and this game still tells a story that was way ahead of it's time.
I like these character designs more than the ones in the final version. This trailer blew my 11 year old mind when it dropped way back when.
