1 normal summon for every deck and limited special summons would get boring fast.
I miss when graveyard was actually a graveyard and banned zone was a definitive thing. I recently returned and took a look at some cards from 2008-2021 and MAN, swear to god you don't know how many different cards I read that could bring back monsters and spells from the banned zone and also it took me a fair amount of time to understand why cards that put monsters from your deck to your graveyard were now OP and considered meta, apparently now the graveyard is more like your side-hand, and since duels ends in 2 turns you better off excavate your deck and put the good stuff in your "GY". As for banned zone, now it seems to be what graveyard was back in the day. Correct me if I'm wrong. At this pace, in 2024 Konami will have to create a new zone called "really banned" because it'll be so easy to exploit the banned zone as it currently is with the graveyard.
And just after I sent that reply I read someone down here saying exactly what I said now, 4 months ago. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.
That was the only legit complaint in this entire video. There needs to be a serious revision to the rules to put a hard cap on special summons. It's so bullshit when you're trying to play a game and your opponent mills till they've got a late game setup on turn one.

That was the moment I decided to stop playing. Absolutely no regrets when I saw pendulum and link cards. I do occasionally hop on Dueling Book to see if anyone is playing with non-link/pendulum cards.

@@turtlesfan44 Yes they did! Only in Core Sets like Lightning Overdrive and Blazing Vortex. The only time you can get rares are the Collector Rare Sets like Toon Chaos
Konami discontinued ultimate/ghost rares in packs because of that move.

@@lazava5150 I’d rather deal with the Trap deck he has. Very few monsters and all traps granted he also has Paleozoics in that deck which makes matches hell, especially since it’s usually a 3-4 person duel.

i am on the fence about that i play dangers alot and link monsters and i feel that special summons should have a cost to them rather than just free monster spamming so yeah back then it was rare to do a special summon but at least there really wasnt a cost since you didnt lose that much advantage but once you play dangers its a real gamble if you get it on the field
@@evandeland6867 Most special summons do come with a cost. If a card that just says "Special Summon this card" it would be broken. The cost can range from the simplest (An example being Cyber Dragon) to the more complex (Gate Guardian or Dark Sage)
When were they ever special? There are probably a handful of cards whose special summon is actually special in yugioh’s entire history. Everything else isn’t special.

But unfortunately due to todays standards, speed and versatility, your opponent has ample amount of time to make negates or just remove your back row before they even enter the battle phase. I miss older yugioh and the protection that trap cards gave players

Yes the tension is real to guess ur opponent backrow. Sometimes I took the risk by setting my ace card on defense mode even though I knew its defense was weak. And how about to bait your opponent to use trap hole before you actually summon your ace card next turn
I love this. Stopped playing when in one turn my opponent went through 75% of their deck and I'm here like, "So... Can you just run me through all 1756 moves you just did? I followed none of it"
That’s my friend with his Lightsworns deck. He’s called Deck Out for a reason cus he usually loses by decking out. Light I get that the main goal is to get all 3 judgment dragons out to nuke the board but still.

Man, remember the days when the graveyard was actually the graveyard? Now it's basically just your second hand and you actually want to put cards in there from your deck basically whenever you can because so many monsters have graveyard effects.
Thegraveyard has always been an importnt part of the game strategically wise. Cards using the graveyard hae always been a thinsince forever
@@xm_heecka.laddder.job_mx5962 Nah, it only really started becoming important around the time chaos monsters were introduced, because before then, your ways of actually interacting with the graveyard were very limited (usually restricted to the limited cards that revived from there, as well as pumping up Bazoo). Admittedly, that was somewhat early in the game's lifespan, but there were still early formats where the graveyard was just that, the graveyard.

Remember when 'removed from play' meant your monsters were actually removed from play? Now it's basically the same as the graveyard. It's not even called remove from play anymore

Just to get hit by Heavy Storm or Harpie's Featherduster. Setting everything blindely was the worst move you could make. Old School Yu-Gi-Oh was about resource management

Those were the days. Now? Handtrap so it never goes off. Special effects giving monsters immunity to it, or outright destruction through spell trap or monster effect.

It was pretty much the only way to stall out enough turns to summon a big boss monster. But that is if you can draw the actual thing or if your opponent didn't destroy it with MST or Heavy Storm

That's why we have special rules when we play with friends. No link, no (or limited) XYZ and it's considered a d!ck move to take a deck where you can finish in one turn. It just takes the fun out of the game when each game takes about 3 turns max.

"Ayy you got trades?" That hit hard. I miss when the community actually enjoyed the collecting and building a deck aspect, now people buy the cards online and have a perfect deck ready to go. I remember showing up to duel and having a somewhat decent deck, few weeks later and a couple packs openned and I'd turn up with my deck being even better and you could surprise people. Now you can tell people what you're running and they can list off every card you have in the deck.

Have you been to locals recently? You can't get cards from other people without trading. Literally everyone is going to have a trade binder.
Locals in all cars games have trades. I’ve played yugioh, mtg sand Pokémon and lot of people are still up for trades. Just go based on tcg value usually unless a card is in high demand
In my locals, back when I still played (admittedly, this was 10 or so years ago), it was the other way around. People didn't want to sell their cards, they only wanted to trade. I don't know what the scene is like now, but back then, not a lot of people were willing to sell.
We had one guy who was a dedicated seller. He had a massive collection that he constantly added to and he only sold cards. He encouraged people to give or sell him any cards they didn't want anymore and then tried to sell them at a profit and, for the most part, he succeeded at that. But aside from that one guy who made it his sidegig, virtually no one else was interested in selling. Only trading.
There's still trades tbh, just you'll have that one guy that's a wanna be vendor who'd try to short you.

You forgot to mention the removal of pretty much any and all uniqueness to play styles and themes of decks compared to the old game.
Everyone just plays the same exact thing, not out of Meta, but out of that there just isn’t much there.
We used to have dozens of different themed decks with all their own merits and flaws…
The modern Yugioh is just bad.
Magic the Gathering still carries on because it always has a sense of variety no matter what they put out.

Truer words have never been spoken. The Normal Summon is more special at this point. You're lucky if you can Normal Summon a monster (successfully) AND activate it's effect (successfully). Now THAT is special.

@@themustachedpistachio1171 Fusion summoning with out poly was thing in GX I'm pretty sure. Thats literally mask change and contact fusion. There arent many modern decks that can normal summon twice.

For a modern player, 2 of the 3 cards set are probably negate trap cards like solemn strike.
Old player: you kids and all your ash blossoms, infinite impermanence, and dark ruler no mores, back in my day we had staples like snatch steal, delinquent duo, forceful sentry, confiscation, pot of Greed, and graceful charity. And yes, we did play them ALL in every deck possible.

Dude I got Slifer recently and let me tell you, it sucks. He is only useful with the magic spell thunderforce attack. And worse than that, he has effect conditions on him that could send him to the graveyard at the end of your turn if you special summon him. He ain't worth the purchase. Save yourself and skip the buy man.

I remember one time at my local shop when I brought my original Starter Deck Kaiba in and dueled a bunch of people with modern decks. I played one monster and ended my turn and they were like "Wait... that's it?" Yep... that's it... now go on and destroy me in one turn.

I was the same way with MTG as a kid! For some reason, even as we were playing the game in a school that was _teaching_ us how probability works using a deck of playing cards, I still couldn't understand why I was the only one using the largest possible deck. XD

You guys recommend any fun decks to play for new returning yugioh players right now I’m thinking about playing locals again.
I use to play blue eyes and heroes for awhile before I retired in 2016 but I have caught up with the latest. rules and just don’t know which deck to play.
You could say its old school
@@MaxAndersonn depends on your playstyle. If you like going for control, try out “Shaddolls” or “Virtual World”. If you like spamming monsters try “Salamangreat “or “infinitracks”. If you like rituals “drytron” is the best deck currently. Though those are all pretty expensive, the cheapest deck currently is “appliancer” it’s just unga bunga beat down. “Virtual world” is probably the cheapest deck that can compete at a competitive level. Most cards in the deck are like 50 cents each. There’s only one card that’s $10.
Though the best advice I can give is do research and choose a deck that you like.
I currently play two different decks, “Time Thief” and “Live Twin”/“Evil Twin” those are what I have the most fun with.
@@MaxAndersonn a good budget deck that i've being playing since it came out is Burning Abyss the mains cards are easy to get.
I'm old school and to be honest, it all stopped with me with pendulums. XYZ and Synchros breathed new life into the fusion/extra deck zone and it was good to see. Pendulums and Links can bite the dust for all I care.
I feel similarly, but to me links feel kind of like syncros/XYZs.

Synchro and XYZ was great, today pendulum, hand traps, links, text book in card with million different effect, it's no fun anymore, personal today is better download a yugioh old game to play, don't play master duel you probably will play with someone with meta deck, and that sucks a lot.

As a magic player of the olden days who never got big into yugioh a lot of this still hits so many notes lol the most painful one is the trade binder. nobody is gonna trade cards anymore at least not without checking prices first zzz i used to love doin that back in high school! People trading cards or even full decks around based on what was fun or styles they liked or art or just stuff they needed for their specific decks. The wild west of card games is LONG gone and is never coming back

I love how "Take Control of an enemy monster" or "draw 2 cards" is broken but taking somewhere between 3-10 minutes to combo 20 Synchro and XYZ summons into each other ending on an all-negating 1-turn ender is okay.
That's the thing. It wasn't broken back in our day, but with all the engines of today they definitely are.
Honestly, as a new player, this is my issue with these XYZ summons, I'm just waiting for them to do their first turn while they shuffle through their whole deck 6 times to summon 5 monsters to get 2 badass monsters on the field while my ancient gears deck give me 3 boss monsters in 1 hand and 2 useless spell cards. so all I can do is wait for them to murder me because having 4 boss monsters is apparently too much for my 20 card deck to handle.
But hey sometimes I do win and one day i'll figure out these XYZ summons. one of these days.

The thing about special summons is actually true. Once, when you special summoned a blue eyes dragon it was a really special summon. Now you can just summon 4 cards a turn, fuse them and then summon 4 other different cards.
It sounds like a whole lot of work for four more cards.
@@kimmccarthy7747 There's a few reasons to do that though. An example would be some beast deck where really, you only summon 1 card to tribute it and chain it 5 times so you can get all those cards as xyz material for an effect. So yeah you might go from 1 card to 1 card despite 6 cards being used, but you now have 6 negates or banishes per turn or something.
Yeah and when someone special summoned everything from their extra deck and FTK'd you with catapult turtle it very special, right? Honestly, old Yugioh isn't as good
@@becomeonewithcraig9478 i'm not a Yugi boomer, i started playing this game in the last year. What i mean Is that special summoning a big Boss Monster like an arravial of the cyberse or a fucking Fire flint lady is way different. It kind of loses its meaning.
@@L1nk2002 Boss monsters aren't special when you just summon 5 of them on your first turn. I actually think master rule 4 was onto something by only giving you one extra deck zone. All they needed to do was ban all links.

Probably one of the funny things when I was playing Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid was how simple the rules were, even if we only knew the rules through the anime, as well as trading for cards that you just thought looked cool. Remember trading a Soldier of Stone, or what it was called, for a Celtic Guardian simply because it looked cool. I think one kid even traded a Blue-eyes for a Red-eyes just because Joey used it

I feel.... the anime we watched as kids made things confusing if anything. Since the writers just kind of did whatever back then.
I remember that as a kid I had to explain to other kids that Change of Heart only last for one turn. Like it literally says so in the card.

Keep watching the show until the newest seasons and maybe it'll be a bit closer to what the card game is, since they always introduce the new mechanics there too
Maybe I am a little late but maybe this still helps you. Master Duel got me back into the game after about 10 years of not playing at all. I learned organically how the new stuff works and hey maybe your favorite archetype from way back when received new support that makes it playable nowadays.
Master Duel is a free game and it's really good. I suggest you try it and play the solo mode, it will teach you about the new summoning mechanics.
Also there's now a casual online mode so you can play without losing points.
When they said "my 2007 deck..." I was like "oh it wasn't that long...." and then realized its 2021 lol. I haven't played in forever, but like your guys content!
My brother is an old yugioh player and he had to look up the rules and it took him 2 hours to comprehend the new rules, YuGiOh really changed a lot.

I feel that. 2 hours sounds about right. We ordered a link, pendulum and syncro starter decks to learn the new mechanics. After plugging away I get it now. It’s awesome. But wow I never thought some of this shizz was possible in 2005

@@franknfoot7200 Honestly, it's when Pendulum dropped where everything really went crazy. XYZ and Synchro was solid still. Synchro was basically fusion without fusion spells and Xyz was just one more step... but add pendulum where you can just summon all the material needed for Synchro and Xyz? thats when everything hit the fan

I’m with these guys, I like the hold Yugioh where you summon monsters. I was fine with everything up to XYZ as I could understand it from there but Pendulum Summoning is when things went off rails for me
It's ok. No one plays Pendulums so is not like it really matters.
Pendulums kinda suck and on top of all that they also got nerffed.

Pendulum really never hit the competitive game, and it made almost no change to the game at all other than the zones in your spell/trap zone, so I don't see all the hate

To be fair it's not that difficult once you get the hang of it (and i stopped playing before synchros and came back after links...it was kind of shocking how much it's changed.)...every summoning mechanic is pretty much straight forward, problem is how much bullshit there's in the game now where you start a game and might as well just get yourself some coffee in the meantime while the other guy does his first turn and hope you get a chance to actually get yours...
Still...the basics of the game are not that much complex. I would love for them to delete pendulums and make as if they had never existed in the first place...now that's a piece of trash mechanic.
I miss the good old Duel Monsters days: when we didn't summon 24 monsters in the first turn.
Same I taught one of my buddies how to play Yugioh the classic way now if I play him he uses a deck of pendulum monsters and I get wiped out every time

@@hyp3r-systems838 There is indeed a deck called "Super-Heavy Samurai" that consists just of Monstercards.
But in general Spells are still strong and used unlike Trap-Cards. The only trap-cards that are used are ones who can be activated from the Hand, like Infinite Impermanence, because setting a card for the next turn is "too slow" and the opponent could easily crush it there, too. Also there are now Monsters that fulfill the role of Traps, so called "Hand-Traps", line Ash Blossom or Ghost Ogre, that also are activated directly from the Hand so you can use them even while our opponent goes first.
I built myself a new deck and went to my first locals in 13 years.
On my first match I didn't even get a second turn, the game lasted 15 minutes my turn was the standard normal summon and 2 cards face down.
My turn was maybe 2 minutes meanwhile the next 13 minutes was watching buddy play solitaire after that I've decided to stay retaired I miss old yu gi oh but the 5D's was the greatest era of yugioh! Though 5D's still feels new.
10 years ago I was like seto Kaiba at this game. Now with all these new bs cards I feel like joey wheeler season 1

@@dantegallardo1974 Back in the ancient days of Yugioh people would fear back row during battle phase cause of traps like mirror force, magic cylinder or Sakarestsu Armor. Not everyone had access to MST cause there were no commons of it back then that came with every structure deck.

Trying to get into Duel Master or whatever it's called might be alright. I just started playing again a couple of days ago.
I spent about $20 on boosters and actually managed to make a deck that's actually scored me a decent number of wins - in low rank admittedly.
I have a hard time remembering what all my cards do sometimes, and occasionally someone will show up with a 20 card combo that melts my brain... But by an large the game will help walk you through when certain abilities can be activated and counters for things your opponent does.
There's also a comprehensive tutorial that brings you up to speed on the game's old *and* new mechanics that has helped a ton.
It's not the same as when I used to go to local tournaments as a kid, but it's helped me get back into the game after 15 years.
@@Syenthros my recommendation for anyone wanting to get back in by playing master duel. Look for a decent tier deck you like and focus on building it along with some staple cards. Once its like 90ish percent done just keep playing and don't be shy to read. Soon you understand your deck and how other cards play. In the meantime spend gems on other nice packs that have good cards and think very carefully before using UR or SR crafting gems

Easy: I normal summon "Lord of D." and activate "Flute of Summoning Dragon".
Now you just needed to have lucked out into having drawn those cards as well as two viable dragons. Usually you didn't, because besides Sangan and Last Will there weren't a lot of searchers around. Those two were the big "combo cards" to allow me to summon my BEWD and REBD. And until I could play them, I had to stall out.

This is beyond hilarious! I stopped playing when synchro came out and picked it back up recently after someone told me about Masterduel. I SWEAR most of these were me when I played an online game for the first time.
same here, luckily I happened to have recently reconnected with a friend who plays modern yugioh and he helped me build a Six Samurai deck that can actually compete with modern decks.
I can relate, I just started playing Master Duel too. At bronze it was simple enough to follow, and I was actually matched with people around my skill level. Then, all hell broke lose when I got to silver.
I get that the season just started which means players are climbing up ranked again, but it’s so overwhelming. Playing like 5-7 cards is considered normal. Decking building also gets confusing.

damn that hit me hard i think i remember but its a bit narrow since i got bad memory and i was 5 back then but i could only play one monster idk and i remember having blue whites ultimate dragon and the one with blue eyes white dragon WITH yugi's knight card forgot what it was but i stopped buying the stuff because its just a waste of money when u dont even know how rare the card is back in the day i thought blue and purple and white and mixed cards like brown and blue were super rare like 1/50 but its just shit and u can buy decks with them they got to remaster yugioh ngl in every way but the anime is too good

honestly, I think up until pendulum we were fine. XYZ pushed things a bit far, but you still had too manage a combo to retrieve your materials which had plenty of interruption to contend with. But with pendulum, you could just summon everything you needed to combo off into Xyz or synchro.
No it wasn't. Even if they never would have released pendulum and Links, the game would be as BS as it is today. Yugioh has the biggest problems for a cardgame in terms of powercreep.
No resource costs (like energy/mana), no limit on cards being able to be played per turn and no set rotations.

No set rotations means, that the new sets HAVE to be better than the old ones in terms of effects, or there's no selling point to them.
Yugioh was always designed in a way, that it was gonna spiral out of control. In that regard, it was always a "flawed" game

@@ShamblesTCG Well it was designed around a tribute cost to cards. The issue is that they kept printing card after card that bypassed the cost.
I kind of wonder how the game would've looked it they adapted the battle city rules from the manga.
-Special Summoned monsters cannot attack on the turn they are summoned.
-You may only active/set 1 spell/trap from your hand each turn.
It would still probably be a mess without rotation. I don't even get the design philosophy. Any sane designer would split up the cards so the high ATK beater wasn't on the same card as the protection effect and the disruption. A good design would print high state monsters for fighting and then make you keep the utility cards on either spell or small low stat creatures.
