Burt was cool. I luved close to his home in Jupiter Florida. I bought horse feed etc from his feed store. Once my parents visiting from North. My dad bumpe into him and didnt realuze it was Burt. Funny but when Burt found out both were cops. He bought my oarents dinner at his resturant in Ft Laudrrdale. He sent Flowers when dad passed. He got me off duty gigs when filming BL Sryker. He also showed up to his acting school. He was pain to some but wuth fan pretty damn cool

He likely took a shine to your parents because his father was chief of police of Riviera Beach, Florida.

My Dad had a similar experience. He was working Vice in PBSO and dopers in the late 70's were doing plane drops at the Jupiter ranch and then trespassing to get the goods. So my Dad and his partner would hang with Burt in the tree house. I'm not sure if they caught anyone, but Burt liked the company of cops and it was more of a good time than a stakeout. My Dad got off duty gigs as well but it was for Smokey and the Bandit II. My father in law was from Riviera Beach and knew the Reynolds' family well also. He's a Darville so I'm technically related to the Bandit by marriage, lol.

He also had issues with Jackie Gleason in "Smokey and The Bandit" during the restaurant scene when Gleason walked in and they had that back and forth they were at odds, trying to out do each other, i guess Gleason didn't want to be in the same room with him after that. If you watch the movie, that is the only interaction they have with each other.
Also I believe Sally Field was always his 1 true love. They really bounced off of each other extremely well on and off screen. I remember after his death reading comments from her expressing that. He was her 1 true love and vice versa.

But Deliverance is the best film he's done.

@@DavidBrown-ke8cb I disagree! Sharkeys Machine was a Clunker too. His best was Hooper, The Man who loved Cat Dancing, Shamus, Boogie Nights, the Longest Yard ( original)The comedies, Fuzz, The End, Starting Over. The film that he should've not only got an academy award nomination for ( but didn't because he posed as a centerfold) was his greatest performance, Deliverance.

Unfortunately, one of the things Reynolds was known for was his unpredictable temper. While co-starring on the Larry Sanders Show Burt went into a rage about something. The cast and crew thought he was adlibbing and thought it was funny, which made him even angrier. There is also that curious case in Arizona where he is suspected of taking part in a man's brutal death.

The most interesting aspect of this to me is the counterpoint to Reynolds reputation in Hollywood by the late '70s and early '80s, when he became one of those stars who seemed to want to work only with personal friends, in Burt's case, Hal Needham, Dom DeLuise, et al., as his film career began to slow down with films such as the "Bandit" movies, "The End," "Hooper," the "Cannonball Run" movies, "Stroker Ace," etc. His shift to TV with "Win, Lose, or Draw" and "Evening Shade" also were endeavors in which he surrouded himself with friends, creating the impression that he was fun-loving, sociable and all that. Both could be true, of course, as he could have had these feuds AND his tight-knit friendship circle.

Marlon Brando hated Burt Reynolds throughout his life. In 1979 he boasted to PLAYBOY that he had "vetoed Burt Reynolds for the role of Sonny Corleone in THE GODFATHER because you have to have a rapport with the people you work with". He also accused Burt, part Native American, of exploiting Indian children for his film THE MAN WHO LOVED CAT DANCING. While filming APOCALYPSE NOW Brando told the crew during a break, "Burt Reynolds is the worst type of actor. He worships at the shrine his own egotism".
