  • Gator McKlusky returns to pay tribute to the long historic career of the late, great Burt Reynolds. This eighth chapter covers the films "Cannonball Run II", "Stick" and "City Heat", along with Burt's struggles with TMJ. This time period, 1983-1985, was the start of the most difficult stretch of his life. This was also the most challenging piece to assemble, staying true to Burt's legacy and presenting a unique look into the change of direction for an actor who was used to being on top of the box office.
    Stay tuned for more!
    Cheers! Gator

Excellent work, thanks Gator! I've never seen all this TMJ information in one piece before and it really helps to put the difficulties Burt had with the Stick reshoots and City Heat in context. It breaks my heart to think of all that he endured because of the pain and addiction. But it was around this time period that Burt saw the newly restarted Georgia Southern Eagles football program play a game on tv and decided to call legendary coach Erk Russell and ask if there was anything he could do for the team. Erk told him the players needed new uniforms and Burt payed for it. Now that's class.

Great work once again. In the 80's I would see Burt every once in a while. My dad was friends with Burt from the 70's and I was introduced to him as a kid at his Jupiter theater during a dress rehearsal and met a bunch of his friends that you covered in the previous video. I was around 10 years old but I recall Charles Nelson Reilly running the show. He was living on US-1 just north of Tequesta, FL at this time and was with Loni Anderson. I do recall that sightings became less frequent probably due to that stunt injury he had on-set so there was a reclusive period in there before he got into TV. But Loni was out very frequently. She used to like going to the Gardens Mall to go shopping and saw her there many times.

@@GATORMcKLUSKYreviews Absolutely brilliant! City Heat was a decent movie, but even when I saw it in the theater, it seemed to constantly want to establish Clint was a bigger star than Burt. I believe a more even pairing would have worked. I know Burt's injury impacted him, he admits to it, but it's a script he should have put more force into preproduction. Stick is a good movie as is, but I would love to see the original. I felt terrible for him during these years, and all the rumors of AIDS, etc. It parallels John Wayne discovering he was nearly broke after The Alamo. Both men dug in and moved forward any way they could, rather than give up. You've taken us places with this that many didn't know, I sure learned more. I can't thank you enough. Your script, editing, format, mixed with humor are just what I opened with - brilliant! Thank you ~ Chuck

great watch Gator! It's been a while since the last chapter but this has been worth the wait. As a long time Burt fan, this period in the 80's has always fascinated me. He certainly made some bad choices but it just seemed that luck was against him during this time, be it career wise/health/financial...not helped of course by the Aids rumours, which at the time finished off his career at the top. Looking forward to the next chapter! Keep up the great work!!

Awesome episode Gator. Some great rare clips I’ve never seen before. Cool to see Clint featured as well. I’m probably in the minority but I actually really liked City Heat. I know it could have been a different movie if Burt hadn’t been injured but still great to see them on screen together. Cannonball 2 for me is one of those guilty pleasures. Not as good as the original but still has some fun stuff.

I remember this time well...my friends abandoned him as fans I remember renting his movies on VHS like Heat, Malone and being asked why are you renting that for? My reply was.... its Burt Reynolds remember him. He never did it but he would have been great in a film noir like Chinatown or Farewell My Lovely if he had played it entirely straight, a hard boiled private detective movie.

Gator: Many years ago the "People Choice Award" homepage had an archive. There you could see Burt Reynolds winning a People Choice Awards and you can watch when he gave a speech. That was in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1984. I watched these clips at the time but I didn't download them and put them on a DVD-R. For some years now the homepage has totally changed and there is no archive with all the old clips anymore. Do you have videos of Burt´s speeches when he won the awards? I´m asking because at the beginning of the video there´s a brief clip of Burt being at the "1983 People's Choice Awards (minute 1:05 till 1:06)" when he said "I know it's true because I read it at People Magazine".
