  • During our GTspirit Road Test of the 2014 Mercedes S500 we tested their innovative new feature called 'Magic Body Control'. Two cameras located at the top of the windscreen scan the streets and setup the suspension to absorb the bumps.
    A few miles from downtown Toronto we found an area with 20+ severe speed bumps, the ideal place to test this new system. The results were unbelievable! Without the system you had to brake down to 15 km/h and even at that speed the whole car would move up and down over the bumps. With the system on however you can drive over the bumps without even noticing most of them.
    It not just works with speed bumps but also with regular smaller or bigger bumps in the road.

    Basically just made speeds bumps useless. Thanks Mercedes!

    All people talking about Citroen had this earlier and blah blah..don't know a shit about cars. It wasn't even near this level of tech. MBC uses a radar based camera to draw an image of the road and a chip to set up each suspension with respect to the bumps and potholes on the road.

    Shows Mercedes-Benz still leads the auto industry in innovation.

    Not to nitpick, I am convinced the actual ride smoothness is just insanely good, but the audio from the camera is picking up a slight dull 'thumping' or 'crashing' sound in the suspension as it reacts to the bumps. If this is noticeable to the occupants it might annoy the hell out of those who are sensitive to mechanical sounds that are out of the norm. Maybe the crashing/thumping sound was just the camera equipment itself, I hope so.

    This is nice, however, back in 1986 I had a Citroen CX GTi 2.5 with a pneumatic suspension. In that car, you could drive it at different heights, and it was like riding on a cloud, truly a cloud, no bumps, and it had Zero Geometry Steering, which meant, you could drive down the roughest street/road and take your hands off the steering wheel and the car would track straight as an arrow, without $30K worth of electronics doing for you in the Mercedes. Don't get me wrong, the MB S500 is a nice riding car, but this technology existed a long time ago, at considerably less money. Just thought you might like to know that tid-bit.

    Bump = to slow down motorist. MBC function = eliminate bump function = broke the law?.....
    Better put a demo on rough road......

    I thought of something like this years ago. Basically a camera that detects bumps and adjusts the suspension accordingly. Can't believe Mercedes stole my idea! lol

      +Alexander Kunz facts!!! a lot of people wont know it though...citroen just did not care much for publicity, the cx break was remarkable..it was used to film horse races. that air suspension was just magical

      one difference is it's only good for bumps whereas the one on MB is great for corners too meaning you can drive your car fast on the corners without any concern

    • @AKU-hs2rj
      @AKU-hs2rj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RaouTV look up older safety tests from CX (was least affected by side wind and the only one not spinning on half wet half dry surface break test), or newer tests from XM (where it did slalom as quick as an Elan). Or even older ones with DS (the one that basically saved the president's life and can basically corner normally without one wheel - although all hydropneumatic are still safe without a wheel or with all flats) ;)
