BMW Active Tourer vs Mercedes B Class - Which Should You Buy?

- www.Cars.co.za - In this modern age of niche-filling car design, it is quite odd that only two premium brands are playing in the MPV segment. Mercedes Benz has found relative success with their B Class, especially the current 2nd generation which is a vast improvement on their first attempt.
And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, there must be some blushing behind all the moustaches at Mercedes HQ, as BMW have broken with tradition to launch a B Class rival, in the form of the front wheel drive 2 Series Active Tourer.
We managed to wrangle an example of each into our studio, and gave them both a thorough shaking down. The models featured in this video are the BMW 218i and the Mercedes Benz B200.
We’ve covered everything from engine power, boot space and load space, the cost of the extras (brace yourself) and there’s a thorough tour of the interiors.
And then at the very end, we pick a winner…

I've tried both and bought the BM no contest, the 2ltr 190 BHP diesel is superb and the 8speed auto box is a dream, fuel consumption is brilliant and will do 55mpg on a run and will do over 600miles on a tank full of fuel, try that with your electric vehicles, at 1750rpm your doing 70mph and is silent at this speed and with the 4wd it's very sure footed on slippery roads, I had a Merc ML320 before which was like driving a wallowing whale by comparison.
My mum and dad have 2 B180d very good cars!
BMW active tourer was the same chassis from the MINi.
Test drove both cars,the Merc is a bit drab inside but the engine 2-1 Diesel is good but not impressed with CVT gearbox,on the other hand the BMW with its 2-0 Diesel and 8 Speed gearbox is very impressive, in the end I went for the BMW with Xdrive AWD and Automatic Gearbox and can't wait to take delivery,I had a ML320 before and wasn't that happy with it constant niggles and expensive repairs spoiled the purchase so I decided to see how the BMW will fair.

Dave Thomas, I’m pretty sure there is no such thing as a 7-seater in the BMW. If you go search it up, you will not find results regarding to this BMW having 7 seats.

Not really exactly true when the presenter said both cars are about the 'same' price. It's not obviously. The merc is more expensive , like $US 20K more. For a little more comfortable , space and power, 20K is a lot to pay. No thanks Merc, I'll go for the BMW.
Nice review mate. One correction; the BMW car is called a Bimmer; The Beamer is slang for a BMW motorcycle.
Drove both and have to say merc was more comfortable on the road! But I got bored of the dash, bmw I loved the seats!! More comfortable and the dash design was really cool other than that they both really good cars for moms or people like me who prefers cars of such design! Also drove a Renault scenic 2015 and have to say it actually was the most comfortable and interior design tops these two German bosses!!! French forgot the speed though!!
The BMW feels like Honda, super light and The B Class feels solid like a Mercedes does.
I would buy the Mercedes

No mention that BMWs ergonomics thrash the B classes. Offset steering wheel in B class and centre dash stack that tilts towards the passenger. Very lazy conversion to RHD. No thanks to Mercedes

It’s about space & comfort not power & speed. The Mercedes is a nice car to look at but wouldn’t pay the price tag. BMW for me.

Test drove both and overall would choose the B class in terms of comfort and built quality . BMW better handling but poor insulation and cheap plastic feel internally.

The foot operated parking brake on the Mercedes drives me nuts,whoever thought of this idea should be in an asylum, Volvo use a similar system and that’s crap as well,the only thing good on the Merc is the badge on the bonnet,I’ll stick with BMW for the foreseeable.

mynamehaschanged Totally wrong in my opinion. The BMWs design looks confused. There's no flow or purpose to it. The B class looks a lot cooler and well thought out.
Chima Chinda Just because the guy in the video says at the end the BMW looks awkward, doesn't mean it is.I bet you if you wait 2 years BMW design will make sense, unlike the always boxy Merc's B Class. Just look at the back view in the video, is the Merc cooler than BMW? Or look at the flat hood in the Merc compared to the BMW hood design.
mynamehaschanged I didn't say so because of what the guy said. It looked awkward from the moment I saw it. There's something about the design that doesn't look well thought out. Speaking of 'boxy', the BMW looks even more boxy to me while the Mercedes looks more elegant. I might be wrong but that's the way I see it.

We all know this is german jealosity over frenchies such as picasso and scenic HOWEVER... If i pick between these two i choose BMW - period. Merc is better at some stuff in compariment butt i got grow up with bavarian bastard and decided to die with.

Woeful review. I'm really astounded at what kind of ppl can do their desperately boring reviews these days. Don't get me wrong... I like boring concise autobild style reviews. But only when they are full of useful hands on driving experience descriptions. This guy is all about "I'll read off the lists of equipment options to fill in the time that would otherwise be better spent talking about the actual goddamn car." Drab. Boring. Soul crushing. Give it up and try work as a receptionist instead. You'd be awesome! "Room 36, Sir. Right down the hall."

No offense. I like Mercedes. But B Class is one fucking ugly car. I drove the 2 series. It's just amazing. U can't believe how compact is the car.
