Had one of these from Avis rental in France in May 2017. Really liked it, the turbo kicked in nicely, and coming from Australia with a Ford Escape V6, the mileage was staggering! It was comfortable and quiet and never had problems on hills or back roads. Just for my wife and I we were pretty impressed. Over 4000km done and really quite liked it.
I've had two versions of this B class, a 2012 B180 diesel sport and a 2015 B220 diesel sport, second one with a lot of other extras ie sunroof, electric mirrors, bigger size screen, etc plus 35 hp more than the first one. Also in a nice metallic blue which I love. Both versions very good, for me it ticked must of the boxes: very spacious, beautiful design both sporty and elegant, also both with a nice Harman Kardon sound system which does the job, overall I'd definitely recommend this car for someone who wants a sport looking cat although they have to put family first. Love the review, one more subscriber here. Cheers
It's definitely a smart looking car. Sounds as if the engine is the same one as in the Nissan Qashqai, Mercedes A-Class and the Renault Kadjar, for example. I liked the little section with the voiceover talking about the interior. Definitely the best review I have seen on one of these, most journalists don't seem interested in covering these in any decent amount of depth. Thanks again, Matt!
This was SOOO. Helpful and timely. A LandRover Defender recently took out three cars parked on a small lane in Chichester. Mine was my second B Class, a 2011 with 36500 on the clock. Perfect for me forever (I thought). You'd never guess it was an old car. Before the Bs, I drove three As until they became sports cars. I've been dithering between returning to the A Class and buying another B. In this video, the reviewer is driving the exact same model that I am looking at! It's 'old' now in 2024, but with 36,000 and a high spec, it looks and feels like a newbie. I'm devoted to MB B Class and will definitely buy another used one. Thanks very much! 😊

I had one given as a courtesy car after someone wrote my focus off, about 10 years ago, it was brand new at the time, I fell in love with it, the drive is amazing and the interior is so comfortable and oozes class, I would definitely buy one 👌
Great video mate, no rambling just very informative & to the point! I'm looking at one of these for the missis but was a bit 'hmmm', you have put my mind at ease, I think it will suit her well!
Thanks so much! I've been looking for ages for an affordable car with adaptive cruise, was very much focused on the Golf and a few others in that price range. Only discovered the B series a few days ago, and I found a 2013 auto with all option packs for $19,500 AUD with 40,000km, test drove one last night and like you say, owned by old people so taken good care of, it has more space, you don't see them everywhere, the engine is decent and it is comfortable inside and suspension-wise. Your video has helped me decide, perfect timing.
Adam Potaznik Thank you for that! Glad I could be of some help. I thought they were very good and not an obvious choice for the majority of people looking. I think it should be more reliable than a Golf too 😉
@@HighPeakAutos I bought it! Shiny Red C200 CDI with most options. Flew to Sydney and drove it back to Melbourne. Thx for reducing my post purchase cognitive dissonance.... Loving the adaptive cruise and Harmon Kardon speakers. Great condition and everyone who has seen it says I snagged a bargain. Also used it to transport a 55" TV box which fit perfectly. 6 years old and still has new car smell ;)
I the previous model of this car many years ago, it was perfect for toting kids, dogs, groceries and for weekend trips as well. It never gave me any trouble at all, and I regret selling it. It was a perfect lady car. It felt so sturdy and safe. I may get another.
Had one as a courtesy many moons ago when my 123d coupe was repaired. It was great in many ways. Mine was an 08 and the courtesy a 12 it felt so amazing inside for the time. This interior was basically the a class a year before that even launched the few people that had lifts in it loved it, the seats were lovely too and the boot vast. Obviously perormance wise there was 100bhp defecit the loaner being the renault special b180d. I loved the thing for the two weeks I had it. Made me chuckle the vented front discs twin exhausts and 40 profile 18s considering the actual level of performance on offer. The beemer was a sleeper se spec black on 17s. Felt sad going back to it after the merc minivan. One flaw I thought the ride was shocking def felt poor on these wheels, cant complain at the performance it is just a stylish shopping car. New shape ones well worth a look will wait till the b220d or the b250 is a few years old i may consider it as a family ride.
just bought an B200 AMG line in silver, ride is fine, interior classy, lots of tech. A very reasonable used price less than 20k. Got rid of my boring VW Golf 1.6
I'd never have considered a B class but I have to say I'm rather taken with it! The only thing I don't really like about the interior is the hideously thick Bezel on the satnav, but that's me just nit picking.
This channel is brilliant. Although I'm a subscriber and watch fairly regularly, it never fails to deliver as here I am pondering a new(er) car for my Wife who wants something a bit smaller than an Outlander for visiting patients in the community. We've considered all the VAG stuff and haven't completely ruled it out, especially as there is mega VAG support in Plymouth (Ellis Motors Ivybridge being the best) but currently the faves are this (B class) or Alfa Giulietta 2.0 diesel. So here I am after wondering if High Peak has a B Class review and bingo! Thanks!
I’m quite a recent subscriber to the channel and just stumbled across this video, I’m looking to buy this exact model & get rid of my awful Peugeot 2008, so this was really helpful and confirmed I’ve made the right choice - Thank you!
Another great video. Regardless of the cars involved I always watch your stuff. After Hoovie of course. I hope the channel grows and you get to do more and more. Keep it up and good luck in all you do.
Hi Matt , Two Litre version has equally excellent economy , plus I believe the suspension is more sophisticated, leading to a more comfotable driving experience . Anyway just brought a 2.0 Sport auto and I am most impressed .
This was one of the videos I saw before deciding to buy a B250. Just got it home last week. It has the AMG package with 206 bhp and 256 lb.ft of torque. Love it. Its the closest to a family hot hatch you can get.
was looking at one of these but the australian dealers wanted silly money used on them and the miles were too high(2011 models)i figured i could look elsewhere and buy something lesser for similar money.
I have a 2013 B180 Sport (1.8 litre diesel) in white, first class car, so practical, very high quality, easy to drive, very good mpg, £30 per annum road tax, superb car. The B Class does need 18” wheels though, smaller wheels just emphasise the dubious proportions of the body.
I’ve been torn between a qashqai and Mondeo for a few weeks now but giving the b class serious consideration after finding them within my price range. I’ve never had a Merc before and a little worried about future costs ie water pump change etc as for my budget you’re looking at a model with 80k+ on the clock. The other reviews have also said the sports model is firm but it does look a million times better than the SE. Great video
We considered one for my wife. I was massively impressed and so much better than the c-max alternative. Went for an IX35 instead (we’re clearly crossover people!). Keep up these reviews mate, great to see normal and interesting cars.

Had a C class, definitely do not recommend the ones with M271 engine. Insanely big amount of C class cars have problems with the chain which leads to engine failure. My W203 also had plenty of problems.
I dont have family and would rather drive B class than small SUV. I agree with Matt, whats the point of small SUV-s?High positioned seats, very economical, smaller tyres, economical engines.I think its better even than limousines.Practical, useable, versatile for small price.
With ebay offering cheap parts for almost any car and a service basically meaning oil and filter changes that you can get done anywhere or do yourself, I wonder what people are worrying about? .
My wife has an identical car to the one reviewed. Really good car, had it for 3 years and have had no issues at all while driving 30 miles a day to work in it. Only thing to point out if considering buying the sport version, check the alloys...they kerb very easily and most used cars will have noticeable damage to them.
good informative review and you did one thing that so many others ignore- what's the Bloody Ride like? TH-cam is full f car reviewers who ignore one of the most basic things car buyers want to know: will they glide along like on a feather bed or feel every frigging bump on the road. Which is also why when someone says a car is the "sports" model alarms bells ring as it usually means feeling every pothole lile a hand grenade went off.
Another great video review. I agree totally as I too drove one almost by chance and actually loved it. Much better than previous model. Keep those reviews coming.
I bought one with 5600kilometers. Now after 10 years its 27000k. No problem.. just changed brake pads. Its my back up car... easy to service and cheap to maintain. Bought at 10k .. so basically its like 1000$ per year... haha. Its underpower. But its okey for city driving with electric steering.
Had one nearly a year now. 2012 B200 7auto. White with black wheels, which I must say aren't in best nick from her 😮. Went to Switzerland and back with the family. Really good on fuel, long runs was comfortable. Possibly due a gearbox service as it's on 99,500 now
As artists who like to carry a load of crap,,,and your colour choice apt,,,if I think of it as the most luxurious white van on the market,,,I think we might shortlist. Our only worry is build quality,,,great review,,,😎
At 05.50 “if this was a French car it would have fallen apart” and prior to that something about great German reliability - IT HAS A **RENAULT** ENGINE AND GEARBOX and if you dig about Delphi electrics probably.
I have A w246 b250 with every option as a beater it's very good car for the price, we also have a w205 c300. The b250 is great value for the money and very solid, plenty of luxury, good on gas, roomy compare to other cars in this price range
I had one of these on loan for a week from Mercedes when mine was being repaired. I expected to hate it, but agree with everything you said. It was great on the motorway and felt far more powerful than 109bhp. And it was dead quiet, with a decent stereo.
Love the scenic route Matt ! Best alternative without doubt is a BMW 2 Tourer ( Cos I have owned one ) , however your review is really tempting me . Only one query , is the DCT Gearbox reliable ? - great to have some feedback on that score . Oh Mercedes ought to be paying you a reatainer for reviews like this ! .
I have the B180 D year 18 plate automatic . Overall car is good in term of mileage efficiency. I have got 60 to 68 mpg on motorway but pickup is not good. Also on hilly area bit struggled. Conclusion if you drive in city and motor way and you will get good fuel efficiency. I m happy with this.
I had an A class from new when the new model came out in 2005. Got rear ended when it was a week old whilst stationary at the traffic lights which caused minor damage, but that side, we did everything in it as a newly married couple with no problems (no tittering at the back please...). We went camping ( even including an outboard engine and zodiac boat in the boot), toured the whole of the UK. The interior was delightfully high quality. It was a really great car. Perhaps not the most stylish for a man of my age at the time, but I thought it was bloody great. The B class is a little more bloated, but in the guise shown here, is pretty reasonable to look at. Mercedes remain one of my favourite marques.
@@HighPeakAutos Indeed. It was quite plush really, for a sub 20k car. I replaced with an impreza wrx wagon of all things. It was like going from a small changing room at Harvey Nicholls, to a large one at Primark. Loved the WRX though even if its interior was tat, its the only car that I've ever owned that I preferred to drive diagonally.
You were suggested and I checked you out. I enjoyed very much. Some things you test aren't sold here so I like the peek at some unobtainium. Keep em coming. Cheers
I have the 2010 petrol and loved it until last week. I note that you are driving on roads with loose stones. THERE IS NO SUMP GUARD that you can buy steel OEM if you realise. The result is a massive hole in the sump from a flying stone against a painfully thin plastic sump peppered over 10 years. Disastrous - month or two to get a replacement and the entire engine has to be taken out to install. By the way the car was being driven at 20KMH when this happened. You pointed out the likely age of the drivers correctly.
I used to think the same about french cars. However I've got an 11 year old Laguna I've had for four years. It's got 181k on it and everything works. It's had an abs pump at 130k and apart from wearing parts ( tyres, brakes etc ) nothing has gone awry with it.
Anyone wanting one of these (or the A class prior to 2011), first call a mechanic and ask for a timing belt replacement, or any work in the engine bay area. These cars are a pain to work on, every bit of work needs an engine removal, or a frame removal.
In Turkey, you can never be close even to buy this car but now I am living in Canada and 2014 models are sold about 13-14k CAD. I am closer to my dream model and a nice trim after also a nice review from the real user like this.
I've been driving older 2008 version restyle, and must say I am very satisfied with it. The only thing I am worried about is bad clearance in both w245 and w246 model, and w246 has smaller boot..you didn't have any issues with low clearance, did you? Great approach to car reviews...👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
If the central screen was an inch or two bigger and didn't have the large chunky black glossy bezel the whole dash would look much better. CayPlay support wouldn't go astray either.
I had one of these as a courtesy car, was a bit disappointed when the dealership told me that was what I was getting but having driven it all day, found I was actually quite surprised how good it was. The one I had was a 220 CDi auto. The C Class parts bin had been extensively used but that was fine as it was a C Class I had so it felt quite familiar. Nice car overall.

I had a 200b sport but had so many of the run flat low profile tyres destroyed in pot holes I got rid of it. A shame really as it was so reliable and cheap to run, definitely a nice car.
I have owned a second-hand 2011 B200 since 2017. It had 55000 km on the counter. Because the maintenance booklet and reference material is so hard to understand, it is never obvious what needs servicing when. You only get cryptic messages like "Service A" on the dash display. Believe it or not, the automatic CVT transmission needs servicing every 60000km... I did not know that and the fricking transmission blew at 115000km in 2019. The alternator blew because the battery went bad, the coolant lines started to leak and the radiator fan had to be replaced with the ECM. The exhaust had to be repaired twice, the emergency brake spring popped in the rear wheels and the system had to be replaced which was a nightmare job. Obvously, suspension needed a few ball joints, etc... In 3 years, this 12000$ car has cost me about 10 000$ CAD in repairs and maintenance. The car is light and prone to be tossed to the side by strong winds. I should have bought a new 22 000$ car with a 5 year warranty instead.
Good review buddy!! I own 1 of these, exactly the same but full white interior and auto gearbox....been a nice nippy car....gearbox got a noise on it now.....but good solid motor....had the a class and no were near as good...better gearbox also

Thanks for this, love your honest reviews without all the razzmatazz! How many families care about 0-60 acceleration??? I'm considering one of these for the same reasons you mentioned. One thing that worries me, though: the 1.5 litre turbo diesel has great emissions and is cheap to run - but would it cope with a family of five (3 growing teenagers) and their luggage on a long journey? Or would I be better off with a larger engine? Also interesting to hear you found the suspension acceptable, even though it's the Sport model which is supposed to have an even stiffer ride. I wonder if it's still acceptable fully laden...? Thanks again!
Thanks for your comments. I would say the 1.5 would be perfectly adequate even with a car full. Have a drive of one and you'll be surprised. The bigger engine would be even better at this job though. I was genuinely impressed with the ride comfort too

I liked the little section with the voiceover talking about the interior. Definitely the best review I have seen on one of these, most journalists don't seem interested in covering these in any decent amount of depth. Thanks again, Matt!
Thanks for watching :)
My pleasure, sir! I always enjoy high quality reviews of more "normal" affordable cars.
My 2018 b250 roof blind stopped working recently. Other than that, i love it.
just got this car. it gets delivered tomorrow I cant wait. Loved your review.
Smart, economical, like the leather seats, massive boot.nice shape. Might think about it on my next buy. Cheers.
For me personally this car has had TONS of problems. Spent more money fixing it than I spent on the car initially.
@@thomaskorousgrough7778 My pal got this vehicle (a used 2011 Mercedes Benz B-180) but unfortunately he got involved in a small accident that rendered the vehicle problematic ever since. Problems ranged from sensors not functioning to side-view mirrors not reclining etc. He was forced to dispose it at a throw away price making a huge a loss, as the value of these depreciates drastically!
I've heard tons of -ve reviews about the B Class over the years. Its very enticing to the eyes but just know if you buy it, it'll eventually end up being a money pit.
Mechanics in my home country Kenya strongly discourage potential buyers of used German cars from falling into the trap of purchasing a B Class. However, they advice that the C and E Class Mercedes segments are reliable.
Just waiting to collect my 2021 B200d
I may well buy one of these today. Not what I’d normally have but I have to say as a small family car I think I might love it! Thanks great review 👍
Congratulations on 100k subscribers. Your review helped immensely. Bought a B Class 180 SE CDI
just bought an B200 AMG line in silver, ride is fine, interior classy, lots of tech. A very reasonable used price less than 20k. Got rid of my boring VW Golf 1.6
Big Dave Good choice! I was very impressed with the B Class. Much more interesting than a golf
I'd never have considered a B class but I have to say I'm rather taken with it! The only thing I don't really like about the interior is the hideously thick Bezel on the satnav, but that's me just nit picking.
Eric George I just bought one love it
This channel is brilliant.
My wife has one of these, i find the suspension quite hard especially with those horrible run flat tyres
Another great video. Regardless of the cars involved I always watch your stuff. After Hoovie of course. I hope the channel grows and you get to do more and more. Keep it up and good luck in all you do.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your support :)
Hi Matt ,
Two Litre version has equally excellent economy , plus I believe the suspension is more sophisticated, leading to a
more comfotable driving experience .
Hey bro I want to buy manual one is they are good as I heard the have a water pump problems
Great video
This 1.5dci is a renault engine basically, and they're quite reliable. Parts aren't expensive either
I have the same but 1,8 cdi… not 1,5
Is incredible how works with only 109hp
We considered one for my wife. I was massively impressed and so much better than the c-max alternative. Went for an IX35 instead (we’re clearly crossover people!). Keep up these reviews mate, great to see normal and interesting cars.
I've got an ix35 in stock at the moment, I'm very impressed with it
4:39 "So I've heard" wink wink ;) Top review mate, subscribed.

it all depends on the condition in which he bought the car. any car that is regularly maintained is a good car.
How does the cost of servicing and parts compare to a Focus or Golf? For a used car this starts to become an important consideration!
Very good point of view
Just got one of these not the sort of car you’d expect a 25 year old to get but I really enjoyed the test drive and I love the roominess of it.
Good choice!
Thinking of buying one the 2012 B180 cdi with the 1.8 diesel lump... Love my 01 C class but it needs money throwing at it now
Had one nearly a year now. 2012 B200 7auto. White with black wheels, which I must say aren't in best nick from her 😮. Went to Switzerland and back with the family. Really good on fuel, long runs was comfortable. Possibly due a gearbox service as it's on 99,500 now
The ultimate semi-cool dad car. They got the cool new gen interior which the C-Klass has only from 2014-onwards!
As artists who like to carry a load of crap,,,and your colour choice apt,,,if I think of it as the most luxurious white van on the market,,,I think we might shortlist. Our only worry is build quality,,,great review,,,😎
I’m considering one of these now to replace my aging car. They seem very good value for the money and spec you can get them for.
At 05.50 “if this was a French car it would have fallen apart” and prior to that something about great German reliability - IT HAS A **RENAULT** ENGINE AND GEARBOX and if you dig about Delphi electrics probably.
Haha I was talking about the interior quality, but point taken!
Exactly. Gearbox in mine failed at 38k miles. Crap car
Oh Mercedes ought to be paying you a reatainer for reviews like this ! .
*In a **_nutshell_** the answer is a big YES*
I have b200 2013 sport gasoline. Its good car with good price tag. Worth.
Excellent value small family car with a premium feel. The automatic would be particularly good I imagine.
... I had one from new for 5years, same spec and colour but Auto. What an amazing car, driving pleasure and looks, was sad to sell! 👍 ...
Bin Baz I think the auto would be even better 👍🏻
Did yours have a steering wheel lock on it? I own a 2014 SE version with Auto CVT box but no steering wheel lock which seems weird.
Another good honest interesting review .
Thanks for watching :)
I agree. The newer 2005 model was much better than the woeful first generation A class. What did you replace it with?
@@HighPeakAutos Indeed. It was quite plush really, for a sub 20k car.
I replaced with an impreza wrx wagon of all things. It was like going from a small changing room at Harvey Nicholls, to a large one at Primark. Loved the WRX though even if its interior was tat, its the only car that I've ever owned that I preferred to drive diagonally.
Haha I like the comparison :)
yes, I bought one too , all was fine and ok
You were suggested and I checked you out. I enjoyed very much. Some things you test aren't sold here so I like the peek at some unobtainium. Keep em coming. Cheers
krifferb1980 Thanks! Appreciate it 👍🏻
B class 180 will be my next car 🚘
Just £30 road tax/ year.... currently paying £240 (C max)
Nice review 👍🏼🚀
Buy one Its the best used car !
Yes the french improved tremendously lately
Anyone wanting one of these (or the A class prior to 2011), first call a mechanic and ask for a timing belt replacement, or any work in the engine bay area. These cars are a pain to work on, every bit of work needs an engine removal, or a frame removal.
super review! this has become my go to channel for car reviews.
This sounds like a really good choice for a budget conscious and needing a very practical usage dependeable vechicle for people with small egos
In Turkey, you can never be close even to buy this car but now I am living in Canada and 2014 models are sold about 13-14k CAD. I am closer to my dream model and a nice trim after also a nice review from the real user like this.
Very good. I didn't know they sold them in Canada
@@HighPeakAutos There are mostly B,C,CLA,GLK series in Toronto. I was expecting seeing A model more but no.
Similar alternative would probably be the BMW 2 series active tourer.
More expensive second hand, parts more expensive (because they're not made by Renault), no Android Auto.
What a revelation! I have never seen one of these tested before. Excellent review.
Thanks for watching!
I crash my B every time I go down the basement
When i got on the autobahn, i put it on sport mode and the engine and exhausts make hella noise, i am just truly surprised by this hatchback
So helpful! Considering buying a used one and this answered majority of my concerns. Might just go for it now.
Glad it was helpful!
Me too, that is why I watched the video, I am nervous haha.
@@livingthingszw5991 Extra hard shopping for a car in lockdown! This video certainly helped
Acarsguy I agree. I wasn’t thrilled at the proposal of driving this but I was pleasantly surprised
nice looking dacia (it has a renault dacia engine , with a proper merc engine id love it)
buy a Dacia then, cheaper.
@@lunafringe10 my comment was that a mercedes should have a merc engine there is no audi with a renault engine all is vag . Merc could develop a low power/emissions engine just like bmw did but they could not be bothered and its another way that merc shows its clients are dumb snobs . Dacia is not cheap btw , new dacia is priced equal to new i30 in my country so fuck dacia . And im romanian
@@mikemayers9353 well in the uk dacias are literally the cheapest cars available, and bmw engines are extremely unreliable and last no time, the b class with renault engine i have one and it is a very smooth engine, its a weird thought, but its a very good engine, you dont notice when you turn it off, its a nice xar its not an s class but its a nice car and good value for money so stfu
@@mikemayers9353 and audis have the same engines as are in seats, skodas, why can audi share engines with cheaoer cars but merc can't?
@@joemcnamara4774 because audi is owned by vw and vw is a good brand while daimler does not own renault and renault and dacia are way inferior brands . That is why .
Worth mentioning it is a vehicle subject to £12.50 a day charge when entering the Ultra Low Emision Zone in London. My 2009 petrol Mercedes is not.(180A)
Other cities may follow London.
A good review and nice car. Puzzling Road Tax is £30 (?)
Yes I have a MB B180 2016 :)
A National Trust car !!!!!!!!!!! Are you sure, did you check the glove box for Weathers Originals ???????
stevie 007 No sign of the werthers 😂
Good review buddy!!
I own 1 of these, exactly the same but full white interior and auto gearbox....been a nice nippy car....gearbox got a noise on it now.....but good solid motor....had the a class and no were near as good...better gearbox also
very nice review I will buy this car with the same specs thank you!
Great reviews as always. I looking to purchase the older module w245 with the 1.5 blue efficiency engine any thing I need to be weary of and do you have any video reviews on that model of vehicle?.
Thankyou, this model car as a second motor for me was one Ive never considered until now!
Always liked that little Benz...Wish these models had made it to the US!
They did but I think only in EV
Another excellent video from the polar opposite Shmee.
A good second car for a family ?
I just bought the b class full electric I love it
I have a 2014 B250 here in Australia, after 4 years I can say it is the best reliable car I've ever bought in 25 years of driving.
I have a French car with 125000 miles (Clio mk3) and nothing has ever broken I'm not kidding! It is as though it left the showroom yesterday. But great review as usual otherwise...
Excellent review! Great car!
I was genuinely impressed with the ride comfort too
I had a 2014 B180 auto. Was a great little car until it reaches 40k and was quoted just under £1000 for a major service including auto box oil and filter. Even a local Merc independent wanted over £800.
Any competent local garage can do it. The service record is kept on a Mercedes database with password protection. My next one on my 2014 B180 auto will be £205 at 40K, with an MOT included.
Good review, to the right point for family-use car.
2 series would be the main competitor
