VVT Tuning the Ameri-Barra Vortec 4200 Studebaker on the Dyno

  • The 1963 Studebaker Lark VI picks up major power on the Dyno through tuning the Ameri-Barra Vortec 4200 DOHC VVT Trailblazer Inline 6 Variable Valve Timing (VVT). We made multiple dyno pulls, and played with the tune to optimize the target VVT angle, at various boost levels. This thing is a real sleeper.
    Thanks for watching!!

    The fact that you are learning to control the VVT with an aftermarket controller is phenomenal. I'll bet the aftermarket is already chasing this same idea. No longer will we see the VVT deletes with aftermarket cams but rather will will see improved mid RPM numbers as you have developed.

      Most of the VVT deletes (on LS V8s) I see are because the solenoids/valvetrain is a weak spot. So, this is pretty cool, but once they find what parts are the weak link, they'll need to upgrade those parts. And (again, I think this is cool as hell) I don't know if there is a big enough market for people running these Atlas engine to that level....although Calvin mention Comp Eliminator., so the parts may already be out there. Will keep watching to see how it goes!

      The VVT in this application only changes exhaust cam timing, and it was done to eliminate the physical EGR valve, it was not a performance enhancing engineering goal in the first place, as it can only retard exhaust cam timing.

      A lot are for the extra duration, it limits you due to valve to valve & piston clearance.

    Awesome I can’t wait to see more and more on this, I also think this thing is a 7875 away from massive glory, specially now since it’s a spool monster, it’ll be cool to see if the 7875 will light better now, but yes converter will need some help when that happens

    VVT IS THE SHIT when you figure out how to make it work from a performance stand point and not mostly for "in cylinder" emissions treatment like most OEMs did.
    Good luck with it, looking forward to more Atlas 4200 VVT monkeying around content.
    This engine family deserves as much love as the stinking LS/LT.

    I think it's just out of turbo in terms of the backpressure. The way I think about it, if you have a perfect 1:1 backpressure/boost ratio that's like you're just running the engine in an atmosphere with that much more atmospheric pressure. So the flow of the head isn't changed, it's still running like stock. But when that backpressure at the turbine inlet goes high, it exacerbates the port back pressure. But by what relationship, I dunno. It could be that say if the backpressure goes up 3 psi, the port pressure also does, or it could be that port pressure goes even higher with some sort of exponential relationship. I'd guess it's more linear. I think it just needs a bigger turbo!

    • @jasonsparshott7208
      @jasonsparshott7208 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does need a bigger turbo or a smaller hot side housing at the least .. he isn't building any dome pressure ( exhaust not spoiling the turbo to it's potential) his back half hot side housing is to large allowing a large portion of the exhaust to flow freely through housing instead of it being used to spin turbo up quicker and higher ! I'd say twin it with 2 T4's with design sized hot side housing! Either way more boost is needed !!

The tear-drop plug holes are perfect to fit a direct injector/ surface discharge spark plug, and a stainless steel button head 14mm hex screw that is drilled out with 6 2mm holes drilled around the button edge. • @hydrocarbon8272

    The upside to high drive pressure - a restrictive exh manifold isn't as restrictive. X lbs of exhaust at 30psi needs half the volume to flow well vs X lbs at 15psi.

    58-x is still only 6 deg per tooth.
    360/60=6
    The missing tooth gap is also considered
    If your vvt can do variable position you should setup a target table so you can hit the ideal cam angle for any rpm and load.

    • @Calvin-Nelson
      @Calvin-Nelson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My engine does not have a 58 tooth crank trigger on the cam or the crank.
      Also, Setting up that target table at different loads and RPMs was exactly what we were doing in the video. The issues I was having were because the ECU was giving strange readings. It took a bit more fiddling, but I figured out that I had a setting wrong. I'm probably the only person in the world messing with this particular feature on this particular engine. There are no base tunes for this setup. Had to figure everything out by trial and error.

    • @GunniGST

    • @Calvin-Nelson

      The computer was telling me it was at like -4 degrees with no duty cycle. Also this engine only has exhaust VVT. I retarded the intake one tooth on the cam sprocket.
      The Megasquirt was giving me a range of -4 to 33 degrees. So 37 degrees of movement. I know for a fact that this profit only has 25° to give. Once I fixed that setting that I was talking about before it now gives me a span of 25°
