- In New Zealand, we find the "Mainly Military Museum" has a running M41 Walker Bulldog light tank that is in the process of being repaired. The tank starts and runs but as of yet, doesn't move. We could still climb in it and move the turret around!

Donkey motor is the starter engine. It primes spins the actual engine and warms up the cylinders before it fires up. They were common in old diesel tractors.

Keep in mind that even though that tank is massive, it’s still considered a light tank.
Put together a Tamiya model of this thing a few years ago; this video was the trippiest shit...
Post-WWII japan military liked this tank as they're suitable for manlets as opposed to the Sherman, but neither were adequate enough when pitted against USSR T-54/55 and Japan didn't have an effective tank to counter the soviet until the Type-74 came out

Light tank doctrine... they weren't *meant* to go head to head with other tanks, they're for scouting, forward operations and light anti-materiel work. BUT... if they get pushed into a fight, they're still capable of hitting fairly hard, you just have to be in an ambush mindset because pretty much anything else can simply blow you off the map.

I was a member of RNZEME at Waiouru from 1973 to 1978 and was involved in the last rebuild of the M41 before they were replaced by the British Scorpion light tank. I rebuilt the Continental 18 liter engines and CD 500 cross drive transmissions. After rebuild, the initial test drive was done without mounting the turret. These things really fly, but ride much better over rough terrain than the M113. Once the turret was remounted, then a three day test was run on each tank before returning the tank to Wai/WEC squadron.. Each cylinder on the continental engine is 3 liters and all are air cooled . This engine also has a supercharger. When started cold, they tend to blow smoke rings from each exhaust
..only saw this thing being worked on, and I believe they actually had it going, but I never saw it moving. QA Sgn, 84-87. EME performed miracles on the 41, but I had to be content with a 548, along with the 548s operated by LAD.

@@rossgregory5767 ...yup. CVR(T) was on its way out, when I posted out of QAMR, and out of RNZAC in 97. M113 was still hanging on, and of course M548 and the other M113 variants including those belonging to QAMR LAD, days were numbered.

I think I know what exactly that 'turn-in place' position on the gearbox does.
Tanks usually use three differentials in the transmission: the center Diff works like normal, but instead of going into wheels, they go into the inner-side shaft of another diff. There are brakes on each of these shafts to steer the tank while it's moving forward (as the ring gears don't spin normally, the outer shaft is forced to spin the other way, moving the tank). To rotate in place, the transmission is placed in Nutral, and power-takeoff is used to spin a secondary driveshaft, which in turn spins to others that always move in the opposite way, this spins the ring gears, and in turn, spins the tank.
As you can't use PTO and have the transmission in gear, it has to have it's own 'spot' without being too much of a pain to get to. The hydraulics switch from moving that pto shaft left/right to controlling the left/right brake once you actually put it in a forward gear.
