- [Update: Sold for $230,000] The last from this salvo from Rock Island Auction Company (Because the auction is this week), the M41 light tank, this one ex of Guatemalan service.
I suddenly realised why I have been enjoying these rock island inside the chieftain's hatch over the WoT ones. no bloody background music.

Wow seeing the Walker Bulldog next to a human makes it a pretty big tank, wouldn't expect that from a "light" tank!
Yeah, I've never really felt the US "understood" light tanks, post WWII.
I've been beside a couple, with one being a bit over a hour drive from where I live and can attest to the rather large size of them. A bit more sleek, but not any smaller really than the few Sherman E8's I've been beside.
Now a M103... That's a bulky tank. Got to get on one a summer ago, and that thing is impressive looking.

The M41's when kitted out for Vietnam were the sexiest and most badass tanks looking tanks ever, like the ones in Full Metal Jacket.
Which M41s? The only M41s that I know of in Vietnam were used by the ARVN. The US was using the M48 and M60 in Vietnam.

I feel like I am capable of at the very least starting the process of tensioning the tracks on just about every common AFV produced from 1940 through the mid 1950s thanks to the Chieftain. :D

My favorite light tank. As an old Armored Cav kind of guy I've always felt that a relatively light, air and/or sea transportable, fast tank, armed with at least a 90mm gun, a 105mm would be even better, would go a long way toward putting the Cav back into the Armored Cav....The Sheridan ARV came soooo close....But missed the mark with that damn gun/launcher....
Mine was the M24 Chaffee. Which was replaced by the M41 Walker Bulldog.
You are definitely right about that bro, i also just wondering that if this type of tank's main gun would be replaced by a more reliable modern equivalent of 105mm tank gun turret were it can be loaded by modern multiple conventional type of rounds, perhaps this old, small but still magnificent armour gun platform, could possibly once again re-commissioned to the active service, to be at least become an Infantry fire support vehicle.
Whew! The suspense when waiting for the track tensioning was intense. I thought we wouldn't get it for a while...

The M-41 was the tank that played both Sherman and Panzer lV or V in the 1960s tv series “Combat.” The M-24 Chaffee played the M-4 in movies. The M-47etc. played the Tiger tanks on the big screen.

Yay! I've been waiting for this for ages..the NewZealand army replaced their centurions with about 8 of these that served until the 1980s when they were replaced by the Scorpion. There's one at Waioru museum & one at Puckapunyal museum.
That was stupid they replaced a late 40s mbt with a early 50s light tank.

The M41s didnt replace the Centurians. The M41s replaced the WW2 era Valentine tanks. The Centurians soldiered on until 1968. When most were sold to Australia.
..there's one at the RNZAC memorial, QAMR, Linton Camp.
There more I look at it the more I find this tank aesthetically pleasing.
I loved the M-41. I learned my gunnery lessons on this model tank.

M-41 Walker Bulldog has been my favorite post-WWII light tank ever since building the Tamiya model kit back in the early 1970s. I got a close-up look at one a few years later on display at the annual Fair.
It's nice that the kit is still available at a great price. You can buy a bunch and do many variations.

I'm glad that Mr Chieftain makes new videos, yet I kind of feel bad I did not subscribe back when I first watched them. In general, I seriously think you should tour a King Tiger next time, especially if its the one in Saumur because it is in the best possible condition.

There will most likely be a running M41 at the tankfest in Nokesville, VA on Sept 23-24 of this year. Well worth it. I actually met the Chieftain at a previous event there.

I've got to say I love the videos and the presentation is excellent. One minor niggle is that the audio quality is a bit hit and miss throughout the video catalog. I'm probably not saying anything that wasn't known already and I do appreciate the difficulty of filming in the environment in which these videos are made , but I do feel the videos would be more enjoyable if I didn't need to squint my ears as often.

I'd feel so vulnerable in this thing if I were a crewman who knew how little armour this tank has, as it's such a big target
Most tanks by this point would be knocked out anyways by the first of second shot anyways
If you ever seen human hamburger in knocked out tanks, you'd feel vulnerable too. Plenty of examples back in 04 in Iraq.
These actually did quite well as infantry support. Were not intended for that - supposed to be recon.
Guatemala bought a total of 10 of these.
Cadillac made one with the turret from the Stingray light tank - had a 105 mm. gun. Nobody wanted it.
The Cuban Air Force was unable to knock any of these out at the Bay of Pigs invasion - they had no air cover for them. Then they went on to hold the airport and take down a mess of T34/85's before running out of gas.

General Walker had commanded 20th Army Corps in George Patton's Third Army WWII. He died of a Heart Attack during the rough fighting down to the Pusan Perimeter.
The coolest part about this tank: the Moapa Valley Library, just outside of Las Vegas, has one in front of their building.
The gun/ turret on this reminds me of the "Frankenstein" esque tank the guys in "The Haunted Tank" concocted... "DC comics" produced it

What exactly was the problem with mufflers "overheating"? Only info I can found is that they started to glow red hot making the tank very visible at dark, but I don't think that is related to having the aux muffler on top of normal muffler

That thing has been rebuilt a lot over the years I'd bet. The track looks like it came from an M113 APC.
You think you could get your hands on an early Abrams for one of these videos (an M1 or MIP)? I'd love to see such an in depth tour of one of those as it's my favorite tank, the M1IP in particular.
That might be tricky given they are still in use and much of it is still classified info.
Xcaliber Trekker I've seen M1s in museums though. The ones that are in active service are the latest M1A2 modifications. If there any tanks still in their original form (M1) or M1IPs, then they'd likely be museum pieces.
Your right of course but those museum pieces have all been de- milled and anything top secret removed.

Those are export models. They are not equipped in the same manner as the ones used by US forces.

This is a very pretty little tank, but a range of 100 miles sounds very limited for a reconnaissance vehicle.. And this was achieved on a road march with constant speed? Were there many M41's lost simply because they ran out of fuel in hostile territory?
Most tanks have pretty short range in general, tracks are aweful for fuel saving, their ground contact is huge, thus taking lots of power to move, wheeled recon vehicles have mostly replace the light tank.
Wot is difference from the chafee? It looks the same with a stretched out turret.
