My umuni made this often and we loved it. It was her version of the Jewish mother's chicken soup. Although my favorite of her native dishes were gimbap and japchae. Funny fact, my father was an American army officer, he wouldn't touch Korean food, omma had to cook strictly "meat and potatoes" type dishes. I made that soaking mistake when I started making japchae on my own, the amount of dry wood ear mushroom was way too much, it made a mess!
@@Bodangers for some reason he wouldn't touch it, his favorite was pinto beans cooked slowly with ham hocks, he always had to have sweet corn bread and fresh onions with his beans. Needless to say, he or my omma are no longer with us, but my American husband loves Korean food, especially bulgogi and japchae. I must add when she made CheongGukJang (his Army buddies called it dead body soup) he'd leave the house and go to his favorite pub.
I ate this for about 3 weeks after I gave birth to my second child and I swear it helped me heal! Im going to make this version for myself for my birthday this year :)
i already said this --- but will add a comment again for appreciation. Thank you for showing the exact products that you used! Super helpful, especially with the sauces 😅 Will definitely try this recipe!
My favorite Korean soup after duk guk! Your recipes never fail!! Thanks to your channel, my Korean cooking has been on point! My Korean husband is fully satisfied 😂🩷✌️
I never thought about seaweed and beef in one dish, but if I learned something from your channel, it's to trust you. You're recipes never dissapoint and I'm kinda addicted to the food you show on your channel! So I will definitely try that one. Nothing better than a good hot soup in winter
Did you know that this Soup made an apperance in Star Trek? It's a dish that the kelpians cook. I cooked it at a Convention in Germany a few month back, and it was gone in no time. This Soup is just awesome.
I'm having a really low energy day and I definitely need more iron. After dropping off my kid at the school bus I went right to the store and got some beef. I had wakame at home, and it's simmering on the stove now at 10am haha. I fully expect everything to turn out fantastic! ❤ Thank you for always sharing such wonderful recipes!
I JUST asked my mum for 미역국 today and was wondering how I'll make it myself when I'm home 😂 perfect timing! I like that your version didn't have any mushrooms too
I can't get Korean seaweed where I live, so I have to make this with Japanese wakame. You definitely can't boil wakame for 30 minutes, though; it will turn into a pot of brown goop. I recommend adding the rehydrated wakame directly to your bowl and then spoon the soup over it.
Loving these recipes! I think my american appa is converted from the food alone 😂 Could I use pork instead of beef? My neighbor just gave me a bunch of cuts and I would love to make this with one or two of them!
When i watch 49 days they said it is a birthday soup.. And during the main characters bday, lee yo won , the guy cook it for her oohh i wanna try it looks delicious
I used to hate fishy flavours, but since I got to visit Korea in 2022, I kinda got okay with them and I always have some Odeng in my freezer now lmao. Good quality seaweed is not fishy at all in my experience.
It might be fun to see both of your cooking and cleaning as a team from now on. I know that preparing, cooking and then cleaning can ruining the protagonist overall stature. But, two hands are better than one. Plus, Claire can practice her skills for when she has to care for someone who is ill or her offspring. Practice makes perfect.
Fishsauce, it's not really my favorite 👀. Or better, what I could get was Chinese fishsauce... Is there a difference who made it in Asia countrys? I'm from Germany and here we have some Asia Markets with much Chinese, Korean and Japanese stuff. For Europeans is fishsauce cause of the smell really weird 😉

I love this soup. It’s delicious and very comforting, especially when you’re not feeling well.

What a beautiful story! It sounds like it was full of love and tradition! Thank you for sharing such lovely memories. 😍
Hopefully your father eats korean food now. I'd be heartbroken if my love avoids my traditional cooking

This guk makes me excited for my birthday next month. Yum!
Wishing you an early happy birthday-hope it’s filled with delicious food and good vibes! 😍

Thank you for giving me something new to make! Also I love your dog! So cute!
My favorite ! I use Korean tuna sauce instead of fish sauce though ❤
I've never seen this before. I really want to try it now.
Hope you give it a try soon! 😁

One of my favorite soups to make. Thanks for the video!
This looks absolutely delicious! I love anything that includes seaweed!
Aaron, that was a rave review from Claire, maybe the top one ever. Take care guys & enjoy your weekend. 💟💟💟
This soup is so good, i make it all year round. Once i used beef brisket. It was so good & beefy.
Did you know that this Soup made an apperance in Star Trek? It's a dish that the kelpians cook. I cooked it at a Convention in Germany a few month back, and it was gone in no time. This Soup is just awesome.
So simple.
Going to try this out later but with chicken
That's gonna be awesome! 😍
I was given this when I was in the hospital after surgery. Excellent stuff!

Going to make this soon. Thanks Aaron and Claire!
Perfect timing! I needed a healthy soup and I love seaweed, I will try this soon!
This soup is my fav Korean soup. I make it with miso and mussels or oysters. So yummy too
So excited to try this! I don’t have any beef, could I use tofu instead??
Sure! That would be awesome too! 😍 (Just as a tip, saute the seaweed with sesame oil to prevent the tofu from breaking down too much! lol )
I JUST asked my mum for 미역국 today and was wondering how I'll make it myself when I'm home 😂 perfect timing! I like that your version didn't have any mushrooms too
whats a good substitute for dashida?
Fish sauce in this recipe! 😍

I wonder if hijiki would work too?
@rachaelhoffman-dachelet2763 I've never used hijiki in a soup but I imagine it would hold its shape better. Kind of a different texture, though.
I've never had it, but I'm excited to try it. Yesterday was my son's birthday. A day late, but it gives me a reason to make it. 😂
Looks delicious ❤❤❤
Love it
Thank you for saying that! 😍
What? No green onions?! 😄. This soup certainly looks delicious 🤤. Will give it a try during these cold months 👍🏼
Thinking deok or dobu added to it would be awesome
Yum! Sounds like a fantastic idea! 😁
Awesome.❤🎉.
Thanks!! 😍
Fly the soy sauce to keep it from getting too dark would Chinese light soy sauce or usukuchi soy sauce work?
Yes, both of them will work!
Loving these recipes! I think my american appa is converted from the food alone 😂
Could I use pork instead of beef? My neighbor just gave me a bunch of cuts and I would love to make this with one or two of them!
don't have beef?? don't worry about it! as always, use what you have!! trust aaron! it'll be delicious!!
@kimcheelove haha love it, aaron's words to live by
Nice!
I trrrrrrust you 😂❤🙏🏼 Thank you 🫶🏻😋
Thank you!!! 😍😍😍
Looks simple and tasty. Seen in a kdrama seaweed soup is what you traditionally eat on your birthday. Is this true?
Yes, that’s right! It’s the soup we eat on our birthday! 😁
@AaronandClaire oh thanks for confirming Aaron 🙂. Love your channel and your enthusiasm. Definitely gonna try this soup.
When i watch 49 days they said it is a birthday soup.. And during the main characters bday, lee yo won , the guy cook it for her oohh i wanna try it looks delicious
Is this the soup you're supposed to eat on your birthday? My birthday is coming up. Maybe I should make it.
Yes, that’s right! Happy birthday to you, Amanda! 🥳🎂
I used to hate fishy flavours, but since I got to visit Korea in 2022, I kinda got okay with them and I always have some Odeng in my freezer now lmao. Good quality seaweed is not fishy at all in my experience.
Is this what people talk about for seaweed soup they make for birthdays? I've been watching Korean shows and every birthday they make Korean soup.
Yes
@ro-zeea.8734 oooo!!! My birthday is coming up! I think I'll make this for myself! 😀
Nice, I will sub the beef with baby spareribs.
❤❤
I’m worried about it!
I always see seaweed soup in the dramas so I bought a soup mix packet online. It was pretty decent but I know it can’t measure up to the real thing.
❤❤❤
😍😍😍😍😍
I would imagine this would be great for weight loss. I'd rather eat a week of this than cabbage soup
Making miyeokguk... does that mean there's a new baby bird on the way? 😏

Practice makes perfect.
But Aaaron! Im so worried, that I'm all sweaty and sliding about! Won't it be all fishy and weird?! 😂
Typo-too tired to re-write- you get the point
Fishsauce, it's not really my favorite 👀. Or better, what I could get was Chinese fishsauce... Is there a difference who made it in Asia countrys? I'm from Germany and here we have some Asia Markets with much Chinese, Korean and Japanese stuff.

6:32 can you introduce us to your furry friend?
But not all brown algae are the same.
A Latin name or more precise description would be interesting.
It's miyeok/ wakame. The package will say 미역 if not otherwise transliterated to English.
@@m.g.7475 thx a lot
Can they put English on their packaging?
No because it's imported from Korea.
