Having lived here my entire life, driven all of the 494/694 beltway at some point or another. Even a couple of times when I first got my license just drove around the entire beltway in one shot just for kicks. That 494/694/94 merge in Maple Grove needs re-doing with the left handed merge for NB 494 into 94 headed west.
For whatever reason, mileage resets at the Minnesota River Crossing. Which is just before the Airport heading West. Going from 494 to 694 in the East Metro, mileage doesn't change
I wonder why there is a need for Interstate 694 when it looks like the same roadway as 494 on the map. Call it all 494 or 694 in my opinion. Great video.
I believe it has to do with N/S/E/W designators. For example.. if it was all 494, traffic controllers could say "494 West" and it could either mean the north or south portion of 494. So having one half be 694 and one half 494 makes it easy to identify which part of the loop you are on.
My guess is that directionally, 694 is the bypass of both downtowns for Thru Traffic I-94. 494 is more of just a Southern Freeway that can still be used for Bypassing Minneapolis and St Paul, but it serves the Airport, MOA, etc. Different numbers for different functions would be my guess
@@MileageMikeTravels I would disagree with that. MnDOT is actually "better than the norm" at providing merge and "escape lane" space at cloverleaf interchanges. If there is criticism to be launched at Minnesota, it is in the preponderance of cloverleafs in which several ramps would warrant flyovers.
i agree, if people actually knew how to merge, then metered ramps would most likely be useless, and they actually only work good when traffic is stopped. they slow down acceleration when getting onto a freeway
I am not sorry to be blunt: I quit watching your channel as I found some of your comments about some states very offensive. BTW I give the credit where it’s due, your videos are good otherwise.
Love the ride along interstate 494 inner loop in Minneapolis MN
Nice drive through I-494

Wonder why exit 1 for I-494 is at the airport and not at its terminus?
The exit numbers for both I-494 and I-694 is marked like that because it is one beltway despite two separate numbers (including theI-94 multiplex)

@@Jboob that’s actually correct. 694 is the official bypass route.
0:25 One of the disadvantages of the cloverleaf interchange. 😒
i grew up taking that very interchange daily... it's a shitshow and always has been.
Minneapolis-St. Paul is horrible when it comes to providing decent merging space for cloverleafs. Probably some of the worst I've ever seen.

Not a big fan of the I-494/694 loop. Either I-494 or I-694 but not _both._
Agreed
*_Hate_* the metered ramps!
