Y’all, I Messed Around and Hurt My Back! 😅 (Plus Birdwatching, Fall Garden, and Farm Chores) | Cog Hill Farm
Good morning, Cog Squad! 🌞 Fall has officially arrived, and it’s a crisp 42 degrees this morning! I started my day as usual by checking out the bird feeders, listening for birds with my Merlin app (seriously, y’all need this app-it’s awesome!), but things took a turn when I hurt my back while setting up the drip irrigation system. 🙈
In this video, I talk about dealing with my sciatica flare-up and share some of my tips and tools for managing back pain, like using my Roman chair. If any of y’all have tips for dealing with sciatica, leave them in the comments-I’d love to hear them! Despite the pain, I couldn’t stay still for long. There’s always work to be done on the farm, and I show you around as we handle some fall garden chores, feed the animals, and chop down our beautiful sun hemp.
We also talk about the amazing birds I spotted, like the Red-bellied Woodpecker, a first-time sighting of a Palm Warbler, and of course, an update from Peaches the Emu (don’t worry, no workman’s comp claims here, Peaches 😂).
So come along and join us for a busy day of farm life, even if I have to take it a little easier than usual!
Timestamps: 00:00 - Morning check-in and birdwatching 05:15 - Talking about my sciatica and back pain management 10:30 - Fall garden update and chopping down the sun hemp 20:50 - Animal updates: Emus, chickens, and more! 30:00 - Wrapping up with some evening farm chores

Jason you do more with a bad back then most people do feeling great!!!
That's exactly what I was thinking!!
Good morning Jason even when you’re in pain you can plant those Smiles in our Hearts that Harvests the Joy of COG Hill Farm. Hope your back gets better soon but until then we will all talk to Peaches and make sure you’re only on light duty. Have a wonderful day in spite of it all. 😊👍👍👍
Well stated!❤
Beautifully said. ❤
Jason, that old sow is tighter than bark on a tree. I think I worked for her when I was in my 50s, still waiting for that raise and I'll be 80 in 2 months.
😛
😅😊
I've had sciatica for many years! My go-to's are a heating pad and a tens/ems machine I got off of Amazon. It works great to anesthetize the nerves that are bothering. And you can set the way you want it to work. To just give a topical shock or a deep seated shock.
I’m a retired rural mail carrier. I struggled with Sciatica for years with all the bending and twisting and lifting. Sitting in the truck for hours didn’t help. Stretching and walking helped but I finally went to a Chiropractor and he put me through rehab and exercise program along with adjustments and I was able to keep myself healthy. I’m 70 and still walk and keep up with my grandson!
As someone with lower back problems, I feel your pain. I pray you are feeling better soon.
I am 73 yo F with Lupus, Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, arthritis and other "inconveniences". Legal CBD has kept me from giving up because of the chronic, often unbearable pain. Many prescribed medications to help stifle the symptoms caused other health issues. All natural, gifted to us by God CBD is a game changer. I also cannot sit still and feel I must be doing something fun or productive. Walking the property, sometimes with a hen or one of the cats trailing along is my favorite thing. I have not owned a TV for more than 20 years and don't care to stare at the computer screen all day. Prayers for your healing.
Holly is just the perfect dog. She’s beautiful, so sweet and works with Jason, not out of obedience, but out of love. You can tell by how she works with Jason . What a blessing she is. She’s a ministering spirit. 💚
I hope your back will settle down quickly. I caused mine to flare up 2 weeks ago, and I'm still paying for it. The most relief I have gotten was when I rubbed CBD cream into my entire lower back and upper buttocks. I finally was able to sit, stand, walk, and move. As for the cream, I figure God created the plant for a reason. Some may be for it, and some may be against it. That's the beautiful thing about having a mind of your own and making choices for yourself. I hope you're feeling better soon.
I agree with you, I have 6 fractured discs in my back and my sister introduced me to CBD cream, what a difference, highly recommend it
I would be for it. When your back flars up, you would do almost anything to feel better.
I use CBD cream on my arthritic neck it is so good I only have to use it every other day
Hello Jason, I'm a US Army Vet with sciatica. My sciatica is near constant and the only thing that tends to help is resting on a heating pad for short periods 10 min on and 10 min off. I'm unable to do long walks but laying on the side of the bed and stretching my leg over the other and down the side of the bed helps also. Bless you I hope you heal soon.
These are therapy exercises I've used since I hurt my back in 1993, and they work. Even if your back is tied or a little sore, these work. Lay on your back and pull on knee at a time to your chest, then repeat other knee. If you can, pull both knees to your chest. Another one is lay on back and put feet flat on floor then rise your back/stomach of the floor. Does these in reps of ten multiple times a day. You can also lay on your back with feet on floor an leave back as much as possible on floor and roll knees to left and back to floor and then opposite direction. Also a moist heating pad helps really good. I've had 20 back surgeries since 1993. The last on was January of this year. I got hurt lifting a half a case of cigarettes and I never even smoked. I was in charge of the cigarettes at a military post where I worked.
After not hardly being able to walk for 11 mths...I was gifted a Acupressure leg band for sciatic relief. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. Within 2 days I was able to walk with nearly no pain. Pain free in 5 days. I got the one with a stone in it for the pressure point. But they have cheaper ones. Walmart's showing them right now as low as $7.94. I'm 59 y/o and been dealing with sciatic pain since my mid 20's. It will change your life!! Best wishes to you and yours
Thank you cricket
What is the brand of the band you bought?
As soon as Jason started talking about what he's dealing with, I wondered about these lower leg bands. I've seen the commercials for them but didn't know anyone who actually used them. I was hoping someone would know about them and would comment. Thank you
I had a failed back surgery 12 years ago. Partially paralyzed me. I would rather not be broken but it is too late for that. I garden from a chair but I garden! I'm still kicking. I hope you get to feeling better! Hugs my favorite farm babies!
Don’t get back surgery. I worked in X-ray and pain clinic. It only helps for a minute. Chiropractor is best for sciatica. Immediate relief. Walking does help though…❤
Bless your heart,& good for you still gardening.💚
Jason, so sorry for your back . Yes, biofreeze is great, it will help so much. So will a chiropractor. Get better soon dear.
I'm sorry about your pain, Jason, but you are so entertaining. I love watching your videos. And Brooke's too. I laugh every time. 😄😄
I had back problems in my 20s, cracked disk, displaced disks 😮. I found a osteopath after struggling for yrs. He's my saviour I'm 65 now and free of problems. I go to him if i do something silly which is rare these days, 1 thing he told me is do not bend and twist at the same time. 🙏❤️
Yes! Osteopath's are amazing! I was going to one about 25 years ago who was helping me IMMENSELY. Then insurance stopped paying for them and I could not afford to pay out of pocket.
Dang! The older we get the less it takes to mess up our body! Be nice to your back. Take it easy & listen to your body. I hope it heals up quickly.
Hope you heal quickly Jason
❇️💕❇️
1) Cup of coffee 2) refill the bird feeder 3) watch them feed and hear them chirp 4) walk and feed the dog. Love and need my morning routine like breathing.
The Sun hemp looked stunning! Always such a joy.
💚🌱🇬🇧
I think it is Sunn Hemp.
Jason, for relief of that sciatica you should get to a chiropractor. Best thing I've ever done.
You being more active has probably helped your back so much. I’m 78, still working, and the more active I am the better and more flexible I am.
Wow! That’s a lot of chickens! Those girls are working hard, just doing their jobs. You guys take such good care of your animals, the farm and each other! Take it easy, Jason. You’ve got a lot of folks sending healing energy and comforting thoughts to you. ❤
Hey Jason, just a thought you went on a road trip and a lot of times my sciatica act up after I’ve gone on the road trip. Hope you feel better soon.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️ bless your heart Mr. Jason. I have never dealt with sciatic problems but have been for the past few weeks. I am a 67 year old woman that has to work part time due to inefficient SSI. This pain is horrible. Mine settled in my left foot being numb and sending shocks of horrible pain up my leg. I have heard several stories of sciatic pain....it is even worse than what I ever heard and it has gotta leave cause I gotta work😟
My sciatica flares up every few years. I use hot and cold packs and my tens unit. That tens unit has been a miracle worker. Praying for you! To me there’s not anything worse than being down in my back.
YES! Tens is my back go to. I use a portable one. It's smaller than a tv remote. Fits in my pocket perfectly!!! Also chiropractor!
Oh bless you Jason! I have the same problem and it is so awful! Bio freeze is a huge help! I’ll be praying for you. Those flowers are stunning. The wagon and flowers looks so pretty.
Back pain is like that. Out of the blue it zaps us. Praying for your speedy recovery.
Jason, over 30 years ago a chiropractor gave me one exercise to help with my back pain. You lay on your belly flat, arms out stretched. Then you lift your arms and legs hold for a few seconds. Release. Then you scoot back till you are sitting on your thighs - never pick up you forearms from the floor. Hold for a few seconds. Repeat about 5 times. This saved me from back surgery for those many years.
Biofreeze will give you a lot of relief in your back and hip , and other places. I have had back and hip problems for years. Biofreeze is the best I have found.hey I forgot to tell you about a heating pad. I would never get any sleep if not for my heating pad. Amazon has the big ones.
Yes we use only bio freeze
Krogers is cheaper than other places!!
I bought it by the quart from my physical therapist.
And arnica gel. I use one or the other depending on the injury and pain.
I just told my dad yesterday to try biofreeze. He's 86 & having shoulder & knee pain
Jason I’ve had sciatica for years. Til one day I sat down on edge of a hard chair. Spread my knees to shoulder width! Place the heel of my hands in the top of my knees and bent slowly over between my knees, as far as I could bend. I do that 10-15 times slowly, 3 times a day. Stretches that back and even showed it to my physical therapists Hope you get some relief!
Take it easy then. Back injury’s can be a big issue!
I stretched. Actually, I decided I was going to mop my kitchen on my hands and knees, but of course, with the pain, I couldn’t- so I laid down in the floor on my stomach. Then I stretched as far as I could stretch to reach as far as I could, so I could stay in one spot as long as possible.. I got the floor done, and the next day, no more sciatica pain. It was so bad that when I’d take a step, I’d holler. The pain was not good. All I did to cause it was, I picked up a throw pillow off the floor, and I felt something in my back. Next day, I couldn’t walk for the pain in my leg. I say, stretch, stretch, stretch,! Now Jason, the mopping is optional. lol Do hope you feel better very soon!!!
Feel better soon ❤️🐈⬛🐝🦆🐎🫏🚜🙏🏻
Jason I am sorry to hear that you are in pain may you feel better soon
I'm so sorry your back is hurting. I have sciatica and sometimes I don't have to do anything but get out of bed. I also have arthritis in my spine, which causes alot of pain without doing anything. We should all take a lesson from Holly, take it easy when you can. God bless you all 💞❤
Oh Jason, i feel your pain!!! So sorry you jacked your back up! That sciatica is the pits!!!! Take care and take time to heal!!!!
I'm so sorry. The simplist things can throw my back out. Sending sympathy.
So sorry about your back. That back pain is horrible
Praying you’re feeling better soon Jason.
First and #1 for me is Lidocaine pain relief patches! I have sciatica also. Down the left leg, too. What helps me is ice, heat, and anti inflammatory meds & pain relievers. Ice helps inflammation, heat loosens the muscle and of course, the meds. They all work together to help more quickly. Mine has been flaring for the last 6 months until I found the right combination for me😊. I literally sit on the ice or heat pad while watching tv.
I am so happy for Marycarl that her parents are taking an interest in what she likes...i wish my parents did when I started showing dogs. So wonderful. Sorry about your back Jason, I can relate.❤
Morning Jason... sciatica seems to run in our family, sister, brother, Dad and myself.
Dad's being treated right now through therapy ( he's 96 years old).
Here's what he's doing lays out in in recliner as flat as he can stand it. Bring knee up towards chest, hold for count of 10...bring knee down but keeping it bent, foot down flat on recliner. Repeat with other leg. Repeat 3 times.
Next exercise laying as flat as possible, bend knees, keeping feet somewhat on recliner and rock hips and knees gently from side to side ( stretching your muscles a bit) keep chest flat while rocking hips.
Also he walks a couple laps across the living room floor, around the kitchen island and back with his walker.
My sister and I do basically the same thing, but more walking, and we also lay flat on the bed or carpeted floor and stretch legs pointing toes out.
Leg lifts and reverse leg lifts ( laying on tummy),
Heat pad when sitting and relaxing, Icy Hot pads when moving.
No sudden twisting at hips.
Hope this helps...mine mostly acts up once I go to bed, so wasn't getting much sleep...
Oh, and as to brother, he's really limited as he has rods in his back...
Jason, I too have sciatica. I know that you don't have to do anything that harms you cause it to flare up. But when it does get right on it and and try this. Just touch your toes we can fingertips and slowly come up slowly go down over and over for probably be 5 minutes maybe. It will help for a temporary reading. Just know I love you guys I'll watch you every single day. I start watching you right after I do my devotions in the morning. You're a big part of my day thank you so much and continue be blessed. Love Fidonya
Good morning Jason, take care of your health ❤️❤️
Jason, I’m so sorry you hurt your back. I hope it’s all better real fast peaches is too good of a boss she wouldn’t take your $.25 raise away so you’re good.❤
Used the Merlin app in my biology and environmental classes. They provide teaching material free to educators. Wonderful people. Even provide individual help. Have a bird checklist for the day dedicated to for bird identification. I sing their praises.
So sorry to hear that you have hurt your back. You are such a hard worker! I am currently in the hospital after having back surgery, so I can empathize with you 100%. I hope you feel better soon. Cheers, you Cog squad fan.
My husband had back surgery he got 12 screws and two rods
Im going on my 4th this coming winter. L4 & 5 & S1. It's no joke, and the pain is awful, as you know. Im sending you healing prayers as well to Jason. My sciatic nerve hurts like hell, too! It's debilitating at times, so I know what you and jason are going through. Look into Revive oils, and you'll be amazed at what the oils can do for pain and many other things we go thru. Im not a bot. Im just trying to help thru experience. Sending you both healing prayer 🙏 ❤❤❤
Heating pad.
Lots of Gel Ice Pads!!!
🙏🏻🩵may you feel better soon!
Hope you are feeling better. You and Brooke take care of yourselves. Prayers for leading and guiding and healing 💙💞🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻✝️
Morning Jason, sorry to hear about your back. I feel your pain!! I am in pain all the time!! Only time, I am not in pain. Is when I am sleeping. Prayers of healing for you. ❤❤❤
Me too. It's just something I live with. Still looking for a magic bullet hoping one day...
@@JenEnzweiler If you find it please share. And I will do the same prayers for you ♥ ♥
Ditto! ❤
I have Merlin on my phone. We live right by the Atlantic Ocean in Nova Scotia, and there are lots of birds around but I am not very knowledgeable about all the different species, so it is a terrific educational tool. Love it!!!
In the few years you been at your new place, the amazing change is remarkable and says a lot about the CogHill family!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊. Those chickens take care of business!❤
Bad back canflare so easy . I can sneeze an mess mine up.
Went an had Lazer surgery on the sciatic an that has helped more then any thing .❤❤Hope you are better asap.
I like using a TENS Unit - physical therapy offices use them all the time but I bought mine off of Amazon and what I like about it is its portal so a lot of people wear them at work. I also love the good ol heating pad after a long day. Green tea also helps with inflammation 🥰🙋🏻♀️
Yes, Jess; I completely agree with you regarding the green tea. When I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease , high quality Green Tea that I found at a specialty market was a life saver for me. That was when I realized that coffee was poison for my system. Guess HOLY SPIRIT had to smack me, to get my attention !
I had a TEN's unit. That thing was a life saver getting my back spasms & pain under control. I wore it out! Need to get a replacement! 😊
Bless your heart. Back pain is awful. I passed spring chicken a couple of hens ago. I had to go get a shot in my shoulder because I pinched a nerve closing a sliding door. Seriously. Sigh. Get better soon.
Jason, you may need to do some warm up stretches before your daily chores.
❤❤❤❤love from a granny in Australia 🇦🇺 .im going to watch this in the morning .. I need to savour it .😊
Jason, before she retired my Mom was a physical therapist. She always told me to do the following stretches when my back acted up. Lay flat on your back on the floor. Bring your right knee up toward your chest (as far as you can). Keeping your shoulders on the ground and move your knee across to your left side. Repeat with the opposite knee moving up and over your right side. Repeat both of these stretches for as many rotations as you can
I'm sorry Jason. I feel your pain...literally!
I pray you feel better soon, Jason. I have degenerative disk disease, the only thing that relives my pain is Tramadol. I hope yours is easier to ends your pain permanently.
We were about to get some hot tea. So nice to see you. So sorry about your back. God be with you.
So sorry Jason for the pain you are going through. You are still a going concern even while in pain. Yeah I wouldn't be talkin to Peaches when in pain, she probably thinks you have slowed down. Talk to her when you are in full form and showing her what benifits you bring to the table🤗🤗💞💞💙💙
Oh no Jason!
Praying you get to feeling better soon. ❤ God Bless
Prayers, going up for you 🙏 ❤❤❤
I had sciatica issues. For me, compression socks helped. No more issues.
I’m sorry to hear that you hurt yourself. I know sciatica can be so painful. Hope you feel better soon.
I have had sciatic nerve pain going to a chiropractor has been my saving grace. Many years ago I had a fall and messed my back up.
I feel your pain brother. I'm in my 70's and need to use this darn cane.
As a Registered Massage Therapist in Canada, I would recommend that you see if you can find someone in your area who practices Rapid NeuroFascia Reset. We would be able to get you out of pain lickety split. Take care of yourself and get well soon.
Oh Dear! I’m praying for you🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
When I have had my back go out with the sciatica pain involved, I have gone to Urgent Care . I don't like taking pain medication and I have gotten a large dose of a Toradol shot (which is a non-narcotic pain medication and anti-inflammatory) a steroid shot, and a steroid dose pack. I can honesty say that my pain was gone the next morning. My primary physician initiated this remedy years ago and when I have those symptoms pop up that almost totally disables me, this regimen has always worked for me. Hope you feel better soon.
I do the shots. It really does help.
So sorry about your back. Sending prayers 🙏 for a quick recovery.
I have the Merlin app. I love it. Due to migration I got to hear 3 rare birds on my camping trip a couple weeks ago.
I know all about back issues,I go to a wonderful chiropractor, use ice when it hurts, take care ,have a blessed day
COLD PACK. Always helps me. Feel better soon. ~ Mrs. C.
Hi Jason, I’ve found swimming or relaxing in a deep warm bath after you’ve had a walk helps me manage the pain from my sciatica. Enjoy the rest of your day. 👍🏼🌷
Hope your back feels better soon.
A chiropractor may be able to help your sciatica 💜💜💜. Also. You can alternate ice and a heating pad to assist the swelling. Feel better soon
God bless a chiropractor.
I love my. Chiropractor. Started with a motorcycle spill and added a horseback fall. He puts me back together.
My husband just retired from Chiropractic after 40 years of amazing results. He would use blocks ( soft wedges) on a patient’s sacrum while lying on their stomach. One under the upper right hip and the other under the lower left hip. Or vise versa. Left to lay there for 10 minutes. Then 20 minutes ice pack and 20 minutes hot pack. 21:17 At home he would use tennis shoes on me instead of the professional blocks. Hot brings the blood flow and makes it hard to move. Cold clears away the inflammation and makes it easier to move and get chiropractic adjustments. I recommend you find a chiropractor. Good luck.
Hope you’re feeling better Jason, you just gotta take it easy and not move so heavily sometimes things don’t work the way we want them to and we get an outside of it is peaches gonna give you time off from work now she’s a strict boss, Lady😂😂😂😂
Do your stretches. I have the exact problem you have. Stretching all day & walking. I have a desk job & it bothers me.
I love Merlin. Never knew there was a bird of the day. Thanks!! Have the setting turned on.
Sorry to hear about your back. Maybe try and take it slow and easy Jason. We got down to 29 last night. I was freezing
I've sneezed and threw my back out.
Oh my gosh
Same- so sorry!!
Same! That was in August. In June I stood up. Evidently the wrong way, but all I did was stand up. 😅
A friend ruptured a disc sneezing in her car & drove to her Dr 30 mi away for help, couldn't get out of the car. Ended up in surgery.
Ouch. It's ridiculous how easily we can do these things.
Good Morning Jason I hope you have a good day 🫏🫏🫏🫏
Good afternoon Jason and Brooke hope you feel better soon ❤💞💖🙏
Feel better soon, Jason!
Hope you feel better soon Jason. Keep moving and drink plenty of water. 🥰
Sending prayers love and hugs
Prayers Jason
So sorry for you I know that pain very well.prays for you.
I would take anti inflammatory medication like Advil. Try to stop the inflammation!
First thing I figured out, was to rub vigorously on the leg/ankle pain immediately. Stopped it in its tracks.
Second thing was to go to the back doctor. He finally talked me into letting him insert a needle into my spine while I laid on an x-ray table . He’d go in just a bit, then look at the ray. O.K. Inserted further. O.K. Etc.
By the time I got home, zero back pain/sciatica. This was five years ago. ☺️
❤watching the video ❤
Have a blessed day
A large exercise ball helps my back more than anything. I lay over it and gently roll forward and back. It opens up the vertebrae.
Long hot bath .then rub with a topical pain med something with an anti inflammatory. Hope you soon feel much better sending prayers for healing 🙏
Red light therapy. You should get the infrared therapy belt. They have all kinds of sizes and shapes. It really helps with pain. Hope you feel better soon!
Jason you might try icing down your back with an ice pack. If you do you should only do it in increments of 20 minutes on & 20 minutes off until pain subsides. The 20 minutes is to keep you from over doing your icing down if not you can mess up worse.
Same thing if you apply heat
as in a heating pad. Some people say just ice but don’t heat.
I feel your pain Jason. I am in constant pain in my back.
Hi, hope you feel better soon
So sad to hear you've injured your back!! Hope and pray you recover soon!
When my sciatica flared up bad I couldn't move without pain. Found some exercises on the internet for sciatica and as hard as it was to do them they worked the absolute best. Pray yours heals quick.
I had that same of pain and now have arthritis in every joint. Use a cane and a rollator and a wheel chair. I am 68 and I think you aren’t to far behind me. Take it easy and get it checked out or you could regret it. Your family is depending on you and your farm but they also need you around for a long time to come. Take care of yourself. Prayers and love to all of you.
Good morning, Jason and Brooke. Hope you’re back gets better.
So soery Jason praying for you and a speedy recovery❤❤❤❤
