  • Many people told me that I shouldn’t got o Manila, surprisingly non of these people have actually ever been to Manila, because even thought Philippines is a very popular destination, majority of tourist usually tend to skip country’s capital. I personally love exploring new places, and since we already had a layover in Manila, we decided to extend it and see Manila for ourselves, and make up our own mind about this city.
    Yes, Manila might not be the most tourist friendly destination and you definitely need to be carful and make sure you’re staying as safe as possible, but beside that the city really surprised me in a positive way! It was different than any other city I’ve ever seen before, it was colourful, interesting, full of life. We had a great time exploring it, and I’m so happy I decided to give Manila a chance!

    Many folks struggling to cover basic expenses often face this challenge because they didn't save enough during their working years. The choices made in preparing for retirement have significant impacts, as seen in my own family. Different investment strategies led to different outcomes. With guidance from a financial advisor, I'm now enjoying my retirement.

    • @GhanYt

      Yes, I'm in my mid-50s, and a few years back, I moved my investments to my wife's wealth manager. While I haven't caught up to her long-term gains, my current earnings and the growth of my retirement fund, compared to just relying on the 401(k), are pretty satisfying.

    • @GhanYt

    Tip: In Manila, as long as you "keep it simple", it will be safe for you. Why?
    -If you bring unecessary stuff around or projecting yourself as a big shot doesn't help, you'll be prone to thieves.
    -Never assert yourself as someone very important in any way coz you will attract attention specially to, again, thieves. Just try to blend in with the crowd.
    Generally, we will not bother you unless, you get yourself some attention in a negative way.
    So always be on your guard while enjoying the experience.

    Am a Filipino living here in Canada and i can compare both lifestyle without bias. I can tell you guys with certainty that Manila is very safe for tourist only thing is you need to be vigilant of taxi drivers who are greedy and some pickpockets. But you need not worry about big heinous crimes like being raped, being killed, being kidnapped none of those. To be honest in general Filipinos are super bias towards Tourist they will always put their best foot forward when dealing with tourist.

      Name me a big city anywhere in the world that doesn’t have a “dangerous” area... danger is subjective... besides only an idiot traveler would knowingly go to a undesirable part of ANY barrio, town or city... in any part of the world... I lived in Manila for 30+yrs... never, as in never have I been in a bad situation. I’ve been to tondo, tatalon, some shady parts of caloocan... never have I encountered anything “bad”... I live in a nice part of Los Angeles and my neighborhood is as safe as can be but when I pass by some places like south central at night... you see helicopters circling, cops stopping and searching ppl on the street... and most times you read or see it in the news, violence of one sort or the other in the area... I’ve lived here for more than 15 yrs... never gotten in a bad situation. My point... only an ill informed idiot tourist would knowing or sometimes unknowingly go to an area one simply must avoid...

      What?? Lol have u been to Chicago?
      my husband is from Manila and I am from Chicago and he’s already been to Chi a few times and we’re planning on going to the Philippines in January, 2019
      My whole life I seen criminal gang activity and witnessed a few shootings but I’m alive and doing good.
      My husband is not scared of Chicago coz he said he’s seen worse in the Philippines. Crime in the U.S is bad but don’t compare it to other countries crime rates.
      I always tell ppl not to give in to the media bullshit and what they say about Chicago.
      For example if 1 person gets shot and killed in Chi no one bats an eye coz we’re gonna assume it’s just a gang going after a rival, it never gets a news coverage
      but if multiple ppl get shot and killed in a week then the news blows up and everybody across the US start to get scared.

    Great vlog, Kaja! I agree, you cannot always believe what people tell you. You have to go and experience it yourself. A lot of people think that Manila is not safe because of what they see or hear in the news. The sad fact is that for the most part only the bad things makes the news. That seem to get more attention. Manila is no different from other big cities in the world. There are areas where you stay away from. Bottom line is that regardless of where you are, you always have to be mindful of your surroundings. Thanks for sharing! Take care!

      How can you write that? She did do her research. She made the video. She could have just remained at the airport during the layover. The title of her video is to grab attention so people would be curious to click to learn more. In the video she mentions that the car hire driver mentioned around what area it's safe to walk around and not venture off into other areas. If Manila was as safe as Amsterdam the driver won't add that caution. And as for Fishing Buddy you're being nice to say "Manila is no different from other big cities in the world." Manila is known for scams. Are there videos on tourists being scammed in Copenhagen, London, etc? Every time I arrived in Manila mostly late at night from a long trip there is always a man who approaches my taxi, not a doorman to open my door or help me with my luggage, but a man who wants to provide me with a girl. I doubt that would happen if you step out of a taxi in Manhattan outside the hotel you're checking into.
      Also after going to the bureau de change or money change a lady with a baby chases me down for money as if I owe her child support. As for robbery the closest I came to being robbed was by two girls in Madrid, Spain who tried to open the door to the phone booth I was standing in while making a phone call. I pushed the door back about two times before the left. The idea that two people would try to open the phone booth door while I'm on the phone was enough to tell me their were gypsy robbers. Other than that Manila is a place going to visit for the experience.

      @Torchiefied 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Scams DO exist in Paris mate so as con artists and that is in France and it is supposed to be a 'developed country' even in Rome and Milan. It's not only happening in Manila. I agree with how Amsterdam is safe though. We walked along the canals in the middle of the night and no one bothered us and it's safe all the time. You have to be very cautious in a lot of European countries nowadays due to terrorism and the cities are always on high alert but then again it didn't dent any tourist numbers in the likes of Paris, Barcelona, London and Berlin. Even Stockholm. But you haven't heard that in Manila apart from a few nutters. In Manila you have to be wary of taxi scammers and muggings do exist but mostly in a dodgy area like parts of Quiapo, Recto and Tondo. Which kinds of tourists go there anyway? There are plenty of gang violence in the cities of London and Paris and it only happened very recently. Acid attack in London and knife-related crime are on the up that the Home Office try to crack down on young people buying knives and acids. Add to that, the moped-driving gangs who are hounding the high streets of London. Few tourists had been hurt in a few cases. Would any so-called Western countries label London as unsafe? No! Not one of them. Not a sausage. Manila however gets a lot of attention because it's labelled a third world country. If you really want to know what a third world country is like then you have to travel to Africa. Philippines is way way better.

      This is bias, You're a filipino. I'm a filipino too but I think bankok is better; transportation is easier, street food is better and they have a lot of interesting activities/places to visit(near bankok ). In manila, I can't really think of an activities that you can do besides visiting some historical places. People wise I would choose manila since people here are much more approachable & helpful. You can't really expect that much in manila since its a city known for having better job opportunity among all the cities in the philippines, so its mostly offices, buildings & huge malls. (These are mainly based in manila, describing the whole country is another talk😏)

    • @vmbg109
      @vmbg109 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That is not true, i think you've never been to places in the city aside from those high rise buildings and malls. Manila has a lot to offer than you think.. just explore. I've been to cities in sea and i think their just the same, of course there are other things that the other city can offer but to me their just the same. in manila getting a transportation is easy as a breeze as you don't have to walk long distances just to get a transportation and it's cheap. Just wait besides the road.. you can choose, whether you take a bus, taxi, jeepney, tricycle, pedicab. uber/ grab, river ferry, train etc. Traffic, well what can you expect, manila a bustling city with a 20M population. Street foods: it depends on your preference of course. Filipino foods are underrated, but it's the best there is, you can even see the rich culture in our food, It's a mixture/fusion of western,Spanish and Asian which you can not see around the world. that is why we have the best food - Lechon, according to several well known culinary expert/commentator and they all agree,that Filipino food is underrated and it will be the next big thing. Jollibee fast food, got the best fried chicken in my opinion next to Popeye's..it's only in Philippines that giant Mcdonalds can't monopolize because of the Jollibee. hehe. Places/ activities,: well, there a lot of places,/activities that you can go and do. Aside from the world's biggest malls out there, we have other historical places, parks, museums: go to binondo- oldest china town in the world which has a lot to offer, food etc, Intramuros, fort santiago, bay walk, arroceros forest park, green belt park, ayala triangle park, parks and wildlife center, very old churches like binondo, manila cathedral, Malate church and san agustine, etc. Rizal park and modern parks/museaums like kidzania, dreamplay, ocean park, mind museaum, star city etc. world class Resort and casinos like: okada, city of dreams, resort world and many more, If you're not satisfied yet.. you can also go to nearby city like Quezon ciy , BGC and makati which also have a lot to offer or better go to nearby provinces like laguna and tagaytay, a 1-2 hours drive by bus , which has tons of places and activities to offer. How about Bankok.. aside from the shrines and Tom yum soup etc, what other places and activities you can go to. I've been there, but for me nothing beats manila, Philippines it's because the people here are what makes it stand-out from the rest.

    • @moira.m
      @moira.m 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well put out. But I have lived inside & outside manila! Filipino delicacies are undoubtedly delicious but then again, what I pointed out was street which is entirely different (ex. Kwek-kwek, isaw, balot and etc) I just find thailand's street food much more cleaner and has a wide variety. When it comes to transpo. Tuk-tuk is wildly available wherever you are and its much cheaper than taxi/uber and their trains are not as congested as in manila; they also have more stations/routes all over thailand but in manila jeepneys are not like tuk-tuk its point to point so you can't really go to a place where you don't have to transfer to an another vehicle. Its cheaper to get a tuk-tuk than a taxi/uber. In terms of place visit in manila you're right, manila does have something to offer more than I realized. All in all, we both have the same sentiments about the Philippines, these are just some facts comparing Bangkok and manila. If its country to country talk, well thats a whole new topic 😊 Philippines has the best people & places all over the world. manila is just a small part of what the philippines has to offer.

    Thanks for the video, specially the concluding statements. I have lived in Manila (Makati) for over 7 years and other parts of the famous for shorter periods. Let me say - if I have to choose between NY, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney, Singapore and Manila - I would go with Manila without a second thought! As simple as that, it all depends on who you are and what you like/dislike... :)

    It's a very honest opinion of the city. I am a 70 retired Filipino who is dual Australian-Filipino citizens (40 years in Australia and 30 years in the Philippines). I realized that whenever I look at tourist destinations, Philippines is being bypassed by many tour company, which is understandable especially as you say, people kept saying that it's unsafe though they never been in Manila. Being retired I spend 10 months out of 12 in the Philippines and 2 months in Australia and anywhere else. It doesn't really bother me if the rest of the world don't want to visit us especially Manila since the city is too crowded anyway. But I am very proud of the country and what it can offer to many people. It has over 80 provinces and over 7,000 beautiful islands, which I dream of visiting all before I die. I had been to most countries in the world, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe but my heart is still in the Philippines, my native land. Thank God for giving us such a wonderful and exceedingly lovely place. For those of wants to come, you are welcome, for those but are hesitant to visit, just listen to the author of this video and find out what you're missing... Natural beauty of the country and the famous hospitality of the people who speaks English in an easy going manner are our assets. Mabuhay. So far, in the past 4 years since retirement, I had visited more than half of the country... with the hope that in very near future, will be able to cover the whole archipelago. Again, to the author, thank you very much. By the way, in spite of my age, I am very young at heart and you can see me through my facebook Steve Aji Esteban.

    I admire you ladies for coming and giving it a try and not listen to idiots who give Manila such a bad rap without even experiencing it for themselves. Shame on them! Of course, there are sections of the city that isn't safe. But hey, which big city in the world can they name that doesn't have a good and bad area? I am glad you had the desire to find it out for yourselves and I assume you did enjoy it. Its not for everyone, but it provides a good introduction the life of urban Filipinos. I am sure you would like to see other parts of the country as well.

    A tip for visiting Manila an philippine cities in general: go to the part of the parks where you have to pay a small entry fee. Young people are hanging arround there often and they will start a conversation with you quite easily. Their English is pretty good and they'll offer you to go out with them or have lunch with them after a chat, which enables you to spend an evening with lovely people in a save environment and experience their culture. Plus there are usually no shady people in these paid areas who try to convince you to go to a brothel or a shooting range or other weird places. Young philippines are truly nice, lovely and open to other people and cultures, you will have a great time getting to know them.
