I always loved how they showed Elizabeth and Darcy dancing alone, to portray how it felt for them. When you're so focused-in on that one person and everyone else just fades away.
What I like most about that, it’s not even romantic, yes they’re focused on each other but they’re still only judging the other. They only see the surface, the first impression, and nothing else. Their knowledge and curious search bears no light to their true character. They know nothing, their attempts thus far have been fruitless and the results of learning more about the other are as empty as the room they dance in. So to later see the ending where it is again, just the two of them, the world shrouded in darkness but they have each other, is the sweetest thing. An ending full of the love they had earned over time and built for each other.
I'm not so impressed by that as by they are having a heated debate while keeping perfect in the form of the dance. Something non British people won't ever understand

I know it's a very quick moment, but I love when Mr. Bennet goes to console Mary. It just makes my heart so warm. My father would have done that for me.
It's worth remembering that he's the one who upset her in the first place, but this is a delightfully humanizing and sweet moment. He only meant to spare her some pain, and instead caused some, and he regrets it and wants to do what he can to make it right. Mr. Bennet may have a favorite daughter or two, but he really does love them all -- sheep and goats alike.
Favorite moments: 1. Darcy walking behind Lizzie as she's looking for Wickham. 2. Bingley playing with Jane's ribbon. 3. Charlotte's wisdom on Jane's personality. Love Char! 4. Mr. Bennett consoling Mary.

this might just be me but the book and 2005 movie both give me the impression that Mr. Bennet had a deeper understanding of each of his daughters, moreso than their mother had. especially the scene when he talks to Elizabeth about how he though she hated Darcy. he tears up cause he knew she would never settle for anything less than true, undeniable love. but he's also aware Lydia and Kitty want to, i'll just put it in a modern light, have fun with flirting and that they dont expect the kind of intimacy that Lizzie was seeking. to the point of letting Lydia go to Brighton. he understands how she feels and respects it enough to not force her to stay at Longbourn when she wants to leave. their mom mainly sought out the financial and social benefits of her daughters' being wedded.
I think this is her best portrayal of any of the movies and TV series. She has so much warmth so you can see why she's such great friends with Lizzie but you can also see why she would be a spinster in that era.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate how well portrayed the three younger Bennets’ were in being ridiculous in this film. And also how ludicrously loathsome Mrs. Bennet was.

I absolutely love the cinematography of this movie. the scene where lizzy and Charlotte are laughing together and suddenly run into mr. Darcy but the framing stays at the girls' level so all you can see is just this unmoving black mass of shoulders and chest. It was such a great way to show how imposing and a bit intimidating he is. he's always just lurking and appearing out of nowhere like this strange mythological creature😂 and when the camera finally pans out to reveal his usual cold and unfriendly demeanor he does something unexpected like ask her to dance, then quietly slinks away again lol. Her dumbfounded response is so perfect.
Thanks for the full length of the ball room scene. Very much appreciated and lovely to watch. Nicely done. Tom Hollander plays all the nuances of Mr. Collins in it's embarrassing glory. And the feelings of' dancing alone' part of the scene should never be left out; it tells so much of the story. Excellent upload.
I also noteced Mr Darcy seeing mrs Bennet talking about a profetable marriage and Charlotte talking to lizzi about Jane being indeferent to Mr Bingly so Mr Darcy had reasons to separate them
She doesn't want to dance with either of them but with Mr Collins she looks away, a bit annoyed. With Mr Darcy she looks him straight in the eye, as if to challenge him; he met his match.
So many films try to have “artistic” moments and fail. They either go out of context from the source material (even with artistic license) or overdo it to the point it loses its charm. There’s no emotion, no sincerity. Here, that artistic moment, when they are suddenly alone in the room, makes so much sense within the context of the book and their characters. Also it’s beautifully subtle, not at all overdone. Their chemistry ties it all together and makes it work. What a masterpiece!
The way Mr. Collins moves his head when bows to Elizabeth in the dance always makes me think of a bird about to grab a worm. It cracks me up every single time.
I’ve read War and Peace, sense and sensibility, Jayne Eyre, PRIDE and PREJUDICE, in all its versions, and none come close to this. It’s my All time favorite and I never get tired of watching this film or going over specific scenes. It had me “Mr. Darcy”!🌹♥️
This variation of Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s dance has always been my favourite, not only because of the soundtrack (which I believe to be MARVELLOUS), but also because it shows what a pivotal point it actually was - if Darcy had bothered to be honest with Elizabeth about Wickham’s character there and then, she would not have been so prejudiced against him, and might not have rejected his first proposal in the way she had. Alas, he failed to grasp this golden opportunity. Then again, while he was still ruled by pride, and her by her prejudice, they were still clearly passionate about each other here - one passionately torn between his growing love for her and his pride demanding what he believed was expected of him, and the other passionately firm in her prejudice against him due to his own undeniably bad behaviour, and passion is most definitely NOT indifference, which is the true opposite of love.
Well said. Passion is an important part of romantic love - and is, somewhat paradoxically, not so different from anger. Which is why so many lovers in movies start off fighting and being angry at each other. Might be destructive in real life, but at least you're not friendzoned 😅
Beautiful movie. I love how much he ends up loving her. I had a clip come up on my phone the other day, where she was visiting his mansion and ran into her. You could see the longing for her, on his face. She entered his sanctuary and didn't want to live without her♥️🕊️
@@blackdiopside5261 Thanks for your infinite love from New Jersey. I’m forever grateful for all the love you have been showing me all these years. I will love to create an atmosphere to know your opinions and thoughts about my movies.
I enjoy the contrast between the way she danced with mr. Collins as with mr. Darcy. Mr. Collins it's one of avoidance and to not engage him in conversation or eye contact. In contrast with mr. Darcy it's filled with conversation intense eye contact and a hint of contention or hostility. Mr. Darcy can see that she's not all caught up in his wealth and status. That she is a woman who has a mind of her own and it's not afraid to express what she thinks and feels. There are so many complexities wrapped up in this scene it's wonderful
i came here to say that. she couldn’t tolerate conversation with collins and couldn’t tolerate silence with darcy. from what i’ve studied, she was trying to understand darcy’s character. having spent time with collins, she knew his character already. tom hollander (collins) pulled off awkward and that staring … made me so uncomfortable just like elizabeth. so funny
@@dianne6155 yes she was deep inside she would study and think and understand people. She did with her family. She understood them. Mr. Darcy was a little different she could only see the surface with him. He had more depth of character and personality than everybody else
I like how she teases him about his snobbish silence, like constant blabbering is commonplace whilst dancing, yet everyone around is absolutely silent as they sink into the serious notes and movements of the song and dance 😆
I don’t care what you say about the 2005 version compared to the 1995 version. This movie is incredible and after watching this scene when I was little I knew I was forever in love with Mr. Darcy ♥️
And then few years later, Keira and Matthew played siblings in another Joe Wright movie, Anna Karenina. From couples to siblings, oh my god, what's Joe Wright doing to them 😂😂😂
One of the most beautifully and masterfully shot scenes in all of filmmaking. The camera floats seamlessly through the rooms, capturing bits and pieces of the characters' conversations and moments, coming to rest at last *outside* all the noise and color and laughter and chaos, bringing Lizzie into frame, but UNCENTERED in the shot... to show she is still just another character in the grander play.
When they "face off" at around 5:11, I kind of get goosebumps. This, among other scenes, exemplifies that Darcy and Elizabeth are intellectual equals, which is a significant part of the allure and timelessness of Pride and Prejudice. For example, Jane and Bingley, who would be considered the other main couple of the book, are definitely not unintelligent, and like Darcy and Elizabeth, they have common sense and dignity. However, their love, like them, is a gentle and simple (not in a stupid way) one. Darcy and Elizabeth are fiery and complicated, and so is their love/ relationship. Jane Austen was definitely an artist when it came to foil. There are so many great foils in this novel. Where to begin?
Love this movie and the novel itself. Jane Austen was a wonderful author. What amuse me most here the last one shot scene. It involves you inside the scene as if you're one of the character.
Gosh i love the comparisons of when Lizzy is dancing with Mr. Colins and Mr. Darcy. When she’s talking while dancing with Colins, their conversation is messy and all over the place; it keeps going in and out. But when she’s dancing with Darcy, their conversation is fluent and clean, and they don’t stop or pause while conversing. Shows how Lizzy’s and Darcy’s personalities/character and attraction flow with each others, even when they don’t know it!
I remember when a group of 20+of us were together at the pastor`s home. He asked us what our favorite movie was. After waiting a long minute, I broke the silence saying, "Pride and Prejudice". It not only stunned the others but when other movies were mentioned there wasn't one to equal it. I absolutely love this movie. I have watched it so many times but will always stop what I am doing and enjoy it all over again. 😉
I know this era had its own share of troubles and strife, but I would absolutely love to go to a ball like this, with tea and cakes, ladies dressed in pretty gowns and men being actual gentleman.
Still the best P&P movie, or any JA movie ever made. The scenes are so raw and vivid, unlike previous versions that seem so staged. The cinematography, scene selection, and color grading are beautiful and the best of what modern film technology can do. Kierra Knightley is so easy to fall in love with in this roll. This felt like the golden era of period film making, where Knightley did a series of films for Focus Features.
I love how when Lizzie and Charlotte nearly crash into Mr. Darcy, the camera was on his chest and zooms out so you can see who it is and as if to show how tall he is.

This is my most favourite movie ever i watched it for the first time yesterday and now its my fourth time watching it. As a hopeless romantic this is my favourite movie
Poor Mr. Bingley in this scene! He can only dance with Jane for the maximum of two dances this evening, and as the host, he would probably have to at least invite a few ladies to dance out of courtesy. And one of dance is spent with Jane totally ignoring him and trying to talk to Lizzie the whole time. 😂
@@marisolcastellanos3183 That’s true! But remember he is the host, so even out of courtesy he has to be engaged in dances for at least half of the time. And Jane would surely be also getting many other request. Though their attentions are always glued to each other, they are still not getting enough time to actually hang out!
Just realised that Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet were the only ones not wearing gloves in the dancing scene. Makes it all the more intimate considering, in those times, proper manners dictated that hands be gloved and any naked skin contact(even hand contact) was equivalent to second and third base.
I read the book again and this one is very little like the book. The BBC version is much closer... but they also had 6-ish hours to accomplish that. If I decide it's an "adaptation",I can appreciate this one more... the cinematography is fabulous. Donald Sutherland is a delight as Mr. Bennet. Charlotte is more fun. Elizabeth and Darcy are electric, and Dench is a formidable Lady Catherine.
I adore this film and the tension between them. Mr Collins annoying character is brilliant. I thought it was a hilarious touch when he was standing behind D'Arcy and trying to get his attention, D'Arcy turned and Collins practically ducked under is elbow...made me laugh out loud 🤣
At the very beginning of this scene Elizabeth is turning anti-clockwise* as she searches low and high for Lieutenant Wickham. The camera goes around her clockwise giving you the feeling that you are searching for someone as well. Brilliant directing. *British term Crazy long and very complicated shot as well. Tons of extras gorgeously dressed and surprisingly complicated choreography. First-rate filmmaking.
Darcy says the dance is most invigorating. The dance is the least invigorating of nearly all, if not, all the dances! 🤣 I think he means Lizzy invigorates him.
Such a great sequence that conveys strong attraction without dialogue. It starts with little Mr Collins dancing with Lizzie and he can't shut up. Lizzie's look of amused annoyance at his rambling and attempts at seduction is perfect. The camera angle is purposely at Mr Collins eye level. Then, post dance, a quick cut to Lizzie and Charlotte still at same eye level laughing and moving fast through the crowd and stop just before they crash into Mr Darcy. The camera pans up and we take in the large, tall form of Mr Darcy and the stark contrast to the ridiculous Mr Collins is established. In the following ball scene it is Lizzie who now cannot shut up. The attraction builds until all others in the ball disappear and it is just Lizzie and Mr Darcy now completely absorbed with the other.
I always loved how they showed Elizabeth and Darcy dancing alone, to portray how it felt for them. When you're so focused-in on that one person and everyone else just fades away.

Camera sequence in this scene is just excellent.
The actor who is Mr. Collins is absolutely SUPERB.
Darcy”!🌹♥️
I love this version. Wonderful casting.
I absolutely loved this version of Pride & Prejudice...
Beautiful movie. I love how much he ends up loving her. I had a clip come up on my phone the other day, where she was visiting his mansion and ran into her. You could see the longing for her, on his face. She entered his sanctuary and didn't want to live without her♥️🕊️
Yes, that longing in his eyes... I always forget in that moment it's just a movie and they are actors playing, it looks so real ❤
6:43 This looks like one continuous shot. Very impressive with so much going on. If there are any cuts they are very well disguised.
it is, they're called long-takes or one-shots; director commentary on the dvd goes more in depth into how they did it
It’s all one shot, they built a track through the set for a moving camera for shots in this entire sequence in the ball
I just love how that shot follows Lizzie and Charlotte right into Darcy's chest.
@@colinfirth6544 I'm watching from New Jersey😊
Hands down, this version is the BEST adaptation of Jane Austen's wonderful book, the BEST!
I don’t care what you say about the 2005 version compared to the 1995 version. This movie is incredible and after watching this scene when I was little I knew I was forever in love with Mr. Darcy ♥️
I like them both for different reasons.
Both are excellent movies.
@noob master I must agree I like that one better
And then few years later, Keira and Matthew played siblings in another Joe Wright movie, Anna Karenina. From couples to siblings, oh my god, what's Joe Wright doing to them 😂😂😂
Tinselworld

He was her cousin, NOT her sibling.

This couple engraved in my heart forever 💜
Darcy's elbow almost hitting Mr. Collins at 6:28 is in my top five favorite moments of this movie.
This version of P&P is my absolute favorite!!!! I think I’ve watched it at least 10:times!!💓💓💓
Luv how he quick stalks her as she is walking around ...so cute.
Love this movie and the novel itself. Jane Austen was a wonderful author. What amuse me most here the last one shot scene. It involves you inside the scene as if you're one of the character.
This is my favourite film !!! Matthew and Keira are the best for me. I cannot immagine anybody else.
Im sorry, but when Mr. Bingley touched Jane's ribbon... all the heart eyes!
this film lives in the deepest corner of my heart
Each scene is masterpiece
I watch this version of pride and prejudice every year it’s my favorite. The casting was perfection!
I must watch a Darcy video everyday to function
Me too🙃
Just imagine the lack of air conditioning!
Yep that does it
The most handsome Mr Darcy, Mathew Macfyden😍
Still the best P&P movie, or any JA movie ever made. The scenes are so raw and vivid, unlike previous versions that seem so staged. The cinematography, scene selection, and color grading are beautiful and the best of what modern film technology can do. Kierra Knightley is so easy to fall in love with in this roll. This felt like the golden era of period film making, where Knightley did a series of films for Focus Features.
I instinctively click on these links now. I have watched Pride And Prejudice a hundred times already.
This scene is just impeccable. I'm amazed by the remarkable work of this unbelievably talented director.
I love how when Lizzie and Charlotte nearly crash into Mr. Darcy, the camera was on his chest and zooms out so you can see who it is and as if to show how tall he is.
I would love to have a man look through my soul as Mr. Darcy looks at Lizzie.... It's breathtaking ❤🥰😍🥹
Every scene a movement working art in motion! This is my favorite dress and hair. Adornment they gave our awesome lead character of wonderfulness. Such an incredible cast incredible scenery equitste everything ❤
The musical score to this movie is superb also!
In the book, Mr Collins is actually described as being "tall and heavy".
but his character is so well done by this actor, that all the descriptions drip away in favour of it.
He looks like that in a different screen adaptation. That actor played the character superbly as well. He was more like an oaf.
The Tailoring of The garments Is Splendid and Introducing.
Elizabeth’s family is so embarrassing. God, that’s relatable how you can love and disapprove of those you love in equal measure haha
Right?? Ahh I never realized how embarrassing they are and then re-watching this montage was like “oh…yeah, I get it now” 😂
This is my most favourite movie ever i watched it for the first time yesterday and now its my fourth time watching it. As a hopeless romantic this is my favourite movie
That really was the best possible clip from this film: so much almost imperceptible background action.
Totally in LOVE with this movie
No matter how many times i've seen it....The feeling is the same ❤ Totally in Love with Mr Darcy ❤
Lol at Collins almost getting hit with Darcy’s elbow
The romantic tension between Lizzie and Darcy is just *chef’s kiss* 👌🏼
This; Too; Is One of Sir Joseph Wright's Most Perfectley Choreographed Moments.
I really adore the soundtrack of this film, "A postcard to Henry Purcell," My favorite 💖
Lmao I can’t believe this is Tom from succession. The actor is actually amazing
masterpiece, hollywood has been on downhill since
This is not a Hollywood movie. It was shot entirely in England, and the director was British.
@@lizardas and most of the actors are British as well😊
@@emooshamaaa736 That was obvious from watching it, but not the director or location. :-)
I'm blushing while watching them dancing and talking 😍❤️❤️❤️❤️how I love this movie so much!
Poor Mr. Bingley in this scene! He can only dance with Jane for the maximum of two dances this evening, and as the host, he would probably have to at least invite a few ladies to dance out of courtesy. And one of dance is spent with Jane totally ignoring him and trying to talk to Lizzie the whole time. 😂
He could always seat a dance and stay by her. But I did feel bad for him. So cute and calm our dear Mr.Bingley.
@@marisolcastellanos3183 That’s true! But remember he is the host, so even out of courtesy he has to be engaged in dances for at least half of the time. And Jane would surely be also getting many other request. Though their attentions are always glued to each other, they are still not getting enough time to actually hang out!
@@anyili3196 Yeah, I forgot that he was the host. You are right
Just realised that Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet were the only ones not wearing gloves in the dancing scene. Makes it all the more intimate considering, in those times, proper manners dictated that hands be gloved and any naked skin contact(even hand contact) was equivalent to second and third base.
This version is different than the book. Nicely done. My favorite is the BBC version.
0:12 sec she has an amazing neck. She looks like a princess. Reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair lady and Roman Holiday
I adore this film and the tension between them. Mr Collins annoying character is brilliant. I thought it was a hilarious touch when he was standing behind D'Arcy and trying to get his attention, D'Arcy turned and Collins practically ducked under is elbow...made me laugh out loud 🤣
Perfect cinematography and the long shot
At the very beginning of this scene Elizabeth is turning anti-clockwise* as she searches low and high for Lieutenant Wickham. The camera goes around her clockwise giving you the feeling that you are searching for someone as well. Brilliant directing.
*British term
Crazy long and very complicated shot as well. Tons of extras gorgeously dressed and surprisingly complicated choreography. First-rate filmmaking.
The cámara work is ART.
I’m female but since personality wise I’m much like Darcy I daresay asking her to dance was immensely brave
He’s Tom Hollander. Terrific character actor in every thing he does. Loved him in The Night Manager and Pirates too.
Darcy says the dance is most invigorating.
The dance is the least invigorating of nearly all, if not, all the dances! 🤣
I think he means Lizzy invigorates him.
I love towards the end of the dance, it seems they are the only ones in the room dancing with each other .
