  • SAD FACE Those awesome "Will it Blend?" videos are BS. I'll show you why.
    In the follow up to the teardown we re-assemble and test the blendtec. It is rated at 3hp; it puts out 1.7hp MAX. It's rated for 28,000 RPM, but it only spins at 18,500.

    I refuse to do corpo shill product reviews. Instead, we get to see the unvarnished insides of tools and gadgets because of you guys that chuck a few coins in the hat. THANK YOU!

    Blending those gold bearing rocks you are well on your way to fame, and fortune. That blender should pay for itself in less than 550 years. Then it is pure profit after that.

    Big fan of abom79... as an engineer (Iworked through in-state college so came out with only 15K in debt) who also has some machine shop and field experience, I learned and continue to learn a ton from the guys who turn wrenches and grind metal every day. Both perspectives are valuable and when you can set your ego aside is when the real magic happens. I have a lot of small teams that I work with, and bringing together skilled laborers with creative engineers and designers, then creating the culture for them to collaborate and be greater than their parts is a beautiful thing.

    I've been watching your videos for a while, they really crack me up. Thanks for everything you do. I had to comment on this one, they really do go overboard on some of the marketing but at the end of the day like you said in the video if you ignore the price, it really is a good blender. I'm one of those people that starts my day with a smoothie 5 days a week and i was tired of destroying a $30 blender every 2-3 months. So i splurged and got one of these and it worked for about 10 months then the brushes went wonky. i think it overheated and it did not sense it quick enough. the customer service was fantastic. they had a new blender in the mail to me within a few days along with a new jar. no questions asked. Theoretically they'll keep replacing it for the next 8 years whenever it goes bad. Assuming the customer service keeps up, I'm ahead of buying the $30 blenders by a bit. and more importantly, it actually makes a smoothie with very little frustration.
    just a quick note, i think the "soup" mode spins faster than the normal fast speed. you may want to measure that. but i doubt it's 10,000rpm more.

    14:00 - I gotta pull you up on this one, just a little bit.
    You're mostly correct, but a big difference happens when you successfully run your own show:
    Machining job shop - Do machining job once, get paid once. If you're as good as Abom79, you ought to do damn well for yourself.
    Engineering shop - Design once, get paid every time the product sells. If you did good enough, you never have to get out of bed before 10am EVER AGAIN.
    The latter one, yeah, it doesn't always go like that, but sometimes it certainly does. If you're in doubt about any of your god-like qualities, you may indeed be best to choose the trade.
    On the average - Listen to AvE, kids, he's right.

    Put magnets on both blades, for balance, and divide your results by two. It takes a lot of torque to overcome side-thrust forces from an out-of-balance shaft, and this lowers RPM significantly.

    Confirm isn't the 120v out of the wall already the rms voltage? peak voltage 170something no?

    • @fohdeesha
      @fohdeesha 8 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      yup, 120 is already the RMS average so root mean squaring that again is incorrect. 120x15 is 1800 watts "max" however typical household breakers have MUCH higher instantaneous trip ratings, the stated number on the breaker is the typical thermal trip after some time of that current draw. You can draw 16 or 17 amps from a 15 amp breaker for a good few minutes before it trips. it's entirely possible and I've seen it myself to pull a full 2500w+ (the quoted "peak" power of this thing) for a good 500 milliseconds to a few good seconds without tripping household 15a breakers. a device can certainly put out 3hp from a wall socket for a few AC cycles no problem, and manufacturers can legitimately call that a "peak" rating, no matter that it only lasts for a few milliseconds

    • @alucard87
      @alucard87 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +frollard we have 240V and 20A breakers ... so maybe they're advertising the max power on european outlets?
      And a lot of places even have a 3 phase 480V with a 120A breaker ... so much power

    • @fohdeesha
      @fohdeesha 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Lunas Eclipse there are literally thousands of breaker types and sizes available, but we're talking about standard nema 5-15 or 5-20 appliance sockets you find in all homes, and breakering these with anything higher than 20a is illegal as per the NEC, at least in the states

    • @hoggif
      @hoggif 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sometimes "peak" power can be stated as an instant peak during the peak of the sinuoidal input (not a peak of any single cycle averaged!). Claims like that increase the "peak power" a lot. Do that for an inrush current and you have huge number to print as a marketing value.

    • @UnreasonableSteve
      @UnreasonableSteve 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jon Sands Yep, if you look into the specs for circuit breakers you'll find datasheets with current vs time graphs showing how quickly it'll break the circuit at any given current draw, for most household breakers, those relatively slow blows are pretty normal. They can start acting up if they get old, though.
      Also, fuses tend to blow much faster (unless you're using slow blow fuses), so you might want to be more careful with high draw devices in older houses (if that wasn't obvious already) or you might be replacing a lot of fuses.

      +EclecticBuddha College educated idiots don't like the unions associated with trades. They would rather work in IT, where they are at-will employees that can be replaced by an H1b visa worker at half the price. The lack of a union gives them the freedom to work long hours for terrible pay until corporate breaks their spirit and they burn out completely. EX:The entire video game programming industry.
      Unions are a terrible thing because they force your employer to pay you a good wage and fair hours, and gives you recourse when your boss tells you to do something stupid / dangerous / illegal.
      It's absolutely astonishing that even the well educated American public fall for the anti-union garbage.

    One thing I would mention is that most households (at least those built or rewired in the US for the last 40 years) are wired for 20A 120v receptacles in the kitchen. Even if your have a horrible power factor during normal operation, at or near max rated load, your power factor should become very close to 1 (maybe .85-.95) since your load has very little lag. You also have to factor in over-current since a 20A breaker doesn't trip at 20A right away. Their is always an over-current time factor and for many manufactures that over-current time is usually around 30-120 seconds at double the rating. That is the very reason that you can start a 16A motor on a 20A circuit even though the startup current could be 1000% higher than the rated running current. So even on a 15A circuit you could in theory draw well over 4HP peak depending on circuit breaker brand and wire run length right before or as the motor begins to stall assuming the rest of the circuit is built to at least minimum spec.
    So 3HP would probably be achievable in most regular scenarios but anyone with half a brain would not buy something strictly based on peak output power labeled on the box. That is like buying a vacuum cleaner because it is rated for 16 Amps over the other one rated for 12 Amps without looking at other things like overall design and efficiency.
    Edit: One other thing to note is that your home brew power meter is hitting 15-15.1 Amps but how high has it been tested to actually go? I know most of the watt meters I have laying around only go to 1500-1600 watts and I own only one that will go to 1799 watts. If you are able to feed that blender an input of 20-30 Amps and measure it you might see an even higher power draw unless you were already on a 20-30Amp circuit. Either way 1300 VA is pretty impressive.

It may not be able to handle too much rock crushing, but it can turn ice cubes into snow, and you can cook soup in it if you run it through a couple passes of the soup setting----depending on the soup, it can get up to around 160F. It's definitely handy if you do a lot of cooking. Great video as per usual.

    Hey Ave,
    Don't trust that cos phi measurement on your selfbuild measuring instrument.
    Cos phi only works on sine waves. Volts and amps are clearly different from sine. So you need an instrument which is able to measure the power factor PF (also called lambda).
    Electrical engineer here.
    I like your videos! Greetings from Germany.

      Unfortuneatly I don't have an instrument to spare. ;) But I recommend to read up on that topic because if the cos phi is wrong, the watts are also wrong. It's because of so called the "deformed power" which is not measured correctly.

      Initially, sure. But once you're past the big chunks, call 5ish seconds, and things are starting to be chewed up into smaller chunks, I'd bet it would start to behave more like a fluid and a lot less like a collection of random solids being kicked around, which would put a steady load on the system which would make it easier for the speed controller to do its job.

They had two 200 ton ball mills which were lined with nihard steel plates and steel balls about the size of a five pin bowling ball. A large electric motor turned them and they worked like a damn. I had two pieces of ball mill liner in the back of my pickmup about three square feet total and that was enough weight to keep the ass end on the snow in winter.

    • @Fredjikrang
      @Fredjikrang 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +AvE They never said 3HP out. Just 3HP peak. Technically possible. (In fact, I have seen these blenders pull well over 20Amps, even on a 15 amp breaker. Breakers are thermal devices, and so take time to heat up and trip. You can actually find derating curves for them that tell you how long they can run at certain currents before they trip.)

    • @seth094978
      @seth094978 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +AvE In addition, aren't most kitchens wired for 20A these days? I know ours is wired for 240V@20A with receptacles alternating on which of the two phases they are connected to. (In effect, two 120V circuits with a shared neutral and ground, there are no 240V receptacles on the circuit)
      In addition, I have noticed that our shop vac, which is labeled as 5 peak hp (total bs) actually does have more power when connected to the 30A circuit for my welder vs. the regular 15A circuit in the garage. I have checked that the voltages are identical (why wouldn't they be), so my theory is that when the motor is pulling lots of current then the resistance of the household wiring actually becomes significant, and the beefier wiring on the 30A circuit causes the difference.

      Mikail Elchanovanich Most power strips I know of are rated for between 10 and 13 amps at 240 volts, so that's something one socket is supposed to handle without issue.
      I don't know what my fuses are rated at here in Australia, but I remember I had a tiny studio apartment in the UK and it had 5 circuits. XD
      Among them the lighting circuit (and this place had only 4 light fixtures), rated at 15 amps, 3 standard power circuits (maybe 20 sockets at most, probably only 10), each rated at 31 amps, though I believe one may have been the boiler, and for good measure a circuit for an electric stove and oven rated at 63 amps.
      Thinking back on it that seems a little crazy for such a tiny flat.
      I mean, yes it was all electric including the stove, oven hot water, and any heating would have to be electric too, but that's still a hell of a lot of power...
      That tiny (about 80 square meters total) flat had 171 amps available at 240 volts. - 41 kilowatts, for a tiny studio flat designed for one person!
      Talk about overkill! XD
